Several months passed by since my last post here. Here is what had kept me distracted me for about eight weeks: I decided to build a replica of a car a good friend of mine used to own about two decades ago. So this is Fujimi �s 1:24 Honda CR-X finished next to pictures of my friend�s original car. You decide whether it was worth the time and effort � he seemed to just love it when I gave it to him as a belated Christmas present.

My current report regarding the construction of HMS Barham is a short one: I have completed weathering using a combination of the methods outlined in David Griffith�s book and the one described by Marijn van Gils in his publication. I came to the conclusion that while both of these methods can lead to attractive results and can be wholeheartedly recommended, it is wiser to use only one of them as they tend to neutralise each other in some way or another. Next I went on to accentuate shadows by applying a wash of artist oils (a mixture of black and burnt umbra) diluted with turpentine followed by a painting and drybrushing highlights with white, middle and light grey, each in the respective camouflage panel. This was tedious due to the enormous amount of detail on even the small parts. While the ship looks rather hard -worked I applied very little amount of rust because I deemed it unrealistic even in wartime for a Royal Navy battleships to look like a rust bucket. I will move on to attach a myriad of fittings to the forecastle and quarterdeck � this way, final assembly of the model is about to commence at last.

The majority of deck fittings have been added: 112 mushroom vents of three sizes, 10 additional vents of different style, 42 hatches and skylights, 23 lockers, anchor chains and various other small fittings. The wooden decks now look really cluttered and the lengthy work of preparing all the small components is beginning to pay dividends. I will attach all the railing to the forecastle and quarterdecks before moving on to add the superstructure.

And the arch enemy of the ship, no, neither the Regia Marina, nor the Kriegsmarine, nor the Luftwaffe, but
this beast!

Fantastic detail, looks more like 1/350 than 1/700. Love it.

If there is still someone following this thread he may find it disappointing that in the pictures posted the ships is still devoid of any significant superstructure. However closer inspection may reveal that much detail has been added, most notably the railing along the fo�c�s�le deck, quarterdeck and shelter deck.
In this build I used WEM Ultrafine instead of my usual choice of GMM Gold Plus just to give it a try. I found that WEM�s product is really fine enough which is the most important attribute � I often see well-built models spoilt by a railing that is overly thick. From what I know only the two types of railing mentioned above qualify for being of close to realistic thickness. WEM Ultrafine bends rather easily so extreme care should be taken when working with it. I pre-painted the lenghts of railing used while still on the fret: longitudinals Revell 9 Anthracite matt, stanchions corresponding to the respective camouflage panel and the bottom rail mid-brown to represent the wooden spurnwater seen on contemporary British warships. You have to look really close to see this little feature! I attached the railing using exclusively PVA to avoid problems caused by changing environmental temperature.
In addition to the work on the railing shelter deck and aft superstructure deck have been detailed. I think the decks � especially the boat deck - look cluttered enough now.
