Thanks Atma .... well i must say i hope there around for some time since the typhoon class is very dear to me (hence the name Red October) i have seen numerous report saying there keeping them till 2019 http://en.rian.ru/mlitary_news/20100507/158917310.html

other reports say they have no plans to do so and will reactivate the two in reserves right now .. http://en.rian.ru/mlitary_news/20110930/167263210.html

I have read some where before that due to Russia's financial problems that they are keeping them in service due to the cost and slow building of the Borei class.

so i don't know but any ways do you happen to know the correct paint scheme for the hulls of a typhoon class ? i have seen so many different hull colors and patterns

Does anyone know if the Akula class Gepard ever recieved a bow or conning tower emblem? If so, what it looked like or photos?

This video doesn't show one as the Gepard is returning to port. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gvi1lBPZmA

In Wayne Frey's book "Russian Submarines - Guardians of the Motherland" on pages 67 & 68 there are grainy pics of an emblem on the starboard side of the sail and on the bow. Circular with the name in large letter across the top and a picture of a leopard face/head below. Can't make out the words around the edges.

same shot on the internet: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/53 ... 071gn.jpg/ (warning!! lots of ads on this page!!)

Thank you Tim,

That is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to see. I should be able to make something similar to that. I'll just have to make up some phrase of my own around the edge.

Do you know if there is any regulations as to what colors are allowed? Or would they just use similar color combinations as the Borei and Yasen classes?

Dan,

Afraid I don't have any information on colors for the emblems. Sorry.

Tim,
That's ok. The only emblem I have is the Borei class, so I'll use it as a basis for my colors. I've already got a cheetah head picture that will work perfectly. Hopefully I can get most of the emblem done this weekend.

Raverdave,
That's the old, error filled release. The same one I'm cutting up in the group build.

Tim,

Just wondering what your impressions on the Wayne Frey book are? I've read that it covers a selected number of types and the photos are a little grainy, but besides that is it worth getting?

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

It covers Alfa, Akula (I & II (Gepard)), Typhoon and Albacore. I bought it for my Alanger 1/350 Typhoon build.

Pics are all B&W. Quality varies since some are actual photos and some are frames from films or videos.

Not much in the way of text, just captions for the pictures. That said, I haven't seen the level detail anywhere else. Many are close-up, in-dock shots. Many for Gepard appear to be from when it was still under construction.

Many thanks for the reply, Tim.

I will keep an eye out for it; I haven't seen all that many publications on the subject of Russian subs - I would think 'Cold War Submarines' is the most comprehensive book I have.

All,
I would draw to your attention the following sites for Russian submarine photos:
One is an actual Russian site: http://submarines.narod.ru/photo.html
The other is a SubCommittee site with Russian photos initially set up by Wayne Frey with mutliple contributors:
http://s181686668.onlinehome.us/phpBB3/ ... 96367d868c

Polmar's "Cold War Submarines" is probably among a very small handful of the best technical references on both Russian and US submarines; I also have a couple of older additional books on Russian subs, and a couple of translations.

As to the Zvedza 1/350 scale kit questions:
As far as the Project 627 November class, I have one of the original Russian publications on this class, which include drawings. Overall the Zvedza November appears to be quite good in matching the details. It really brings home how long and narrow in beam these boats were.
The Project 658 Hotel I is also a good representation for the earlier Hotel I class, which had the R-13 missile/D2 launch system. The later Hotel II with the R-21/D-4 launch system has some subtle differences.

Thank you Tom Dougherty i think i will be getting the November class boat soon. Now is off to find an accurate color scheme..

and for racer1985 if your looking for pictures of Russian subs this cite is the best i found ..... however it is all in Russian .... so if you have Google chrome turn on auto translate , then go the the search but since the cite is in Russian you wont be able to type in English words cause the search engine wont recognized it so just type in the project number like for the Lada class which is Project 677 just type in 677 in the search bar and look for the number in the results there are tons of pics and a ton of rare and in depth photos

http://forums.airbase.ru/viewforum.php?id=25&p=2

hope it works for you

Thank you very much Tom! would you know if the November class were painted all black with a thin white strip through the middle or half black on top and red on the bottom?

Hello guys Im in a bit of a mess I would like to enter some good old Russian subs but Im in trouble I have been trying to get into Resin ships but none of them come with decals. I have never done resin before now and didnt know they dont come with decals. Im not skilled enough to paint some of the details on the ships like, the white window frames the white rings and the red and white hatches and other odds and ends. I bought some DVD to make your decals but I just cant get anything to work on it despite it being a month. Does anyone make their own decals or know how to do so? If anyone is good at it and knows how to make a good Russian sub set of decals I would more than happily buy them for you!!!!!!!
