Im trying to make a bit of order among my kits and the aftermarket stuff for them. The next one I will start will be a 1/350 PoW (outfitted as sunk), and far in the future an early KGV (as Bismarck chase), and a DoY outfitted as she was when she pommeled Scharnhorst.

So, heres the question. What aftermarket stuff for each? I have both the WEM and GMM etch. Which of them would be best for PoW and which for KGV? As far as I have understood from this thread, the PoW kit is best for an early KGV as well? I have the WEM UP-launchers which I intended to use with the KGV, and I have some WEM pom-poms as well (PoW?).

Which kit would be best for the Duke of York? Tamiya KGV? What aftermarket parts? What camouflage was she in at that moment?

Brass barrels for each of them, and possibly the Shinsengumi wooden decks as well.

The best kit for early KGV is the Prince of Wales, although you can build an early version from the KGV kit.

For Duke of York I would suggest the KGV kit.

In my opinion, since you intend to build three ships of this class, get yourself the book British Battleships of WWII by Alan Raven and John Roberts (ISBN 0-87021-817-4). It will provide you with most of the information and details you need for all the different configurations. As well as the differences between each ship of the class. It is a bit pricy though, but worth its money...

And what about some pics, when available... :wave_1: :wave_1:

Good advice, but since Im quite certain it will be a while before I start KGV or DoY, I will probably hold back on the books for now.
But, I have a question. In many of the pictures Ive studied, there seem to be an angled surface on the top of the sides. Not the armour belt, but the sides, where it meets the deck. Is this just me seeing things, or is this so? The kit dont have it, but I think I can see it in many pictures.

In looking for something completely different I came across this page on "Wiki-imagination" :-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_14_inch ... _naval_gun

Although never mounted on a ship, I didn't know there were any left. (This one is at Fort Nelson, overlooking Portsmouth - which is part of the Royal Armouries and has various artillery pieces and ammunition displayed [almost all army])

Phil is correct in saying "almost all Army" - however, there are a few other naval weapons there; from memory a twin 4", a First World War 6", a 12pdr and possibly others. If visiting the Fort, the Explosion! museum at Gosport (http://www.explosion.org.uk/) also contains a number of naval weapons and ammunition.

Can any one on this forum direct me to a book or site on the
camouflage pattern the POW had when sunk.
The model that I'm just starting is quite vague on the paint scheme.
Thanks

I would like to give a big thank you to all the fellow modelers from this site who have
either contacted me privately or replied to this post.
I now have all the details that I wanted, the hard part is putting it to good use.
Many thanks

Hello everyone, just wanted to ask, how accurate is the 1/700 KGV from Tamiya (AA configuration, bridge, mast, radar, etc) and what period it refers ?
Thanks in advance.

Going back to the question about which Tamiya kit is best for the 1943 Duke of York, I think you will find that it is actually bthe PoW. You have the catapuilt, the right radar and several other things; the KGV would be best for a post 1944 BPF version.
One problem you would have would be the 4 HAC's directors, which are a different shape in the first two sisters to Duke of York and the others. Could anyone suggest where I could get a good scale drawing of them? I have triedd the Maritime museum in Greenwhich, but the one they sent arn't that precise. Peter Beishem, are you out there?

Hi,

I've got a 1/200 scale card construction kit for the Prince of Wales that I purchased from Marcle Models. It came in a form of a book and doesn't look like a Saturday afternoon job really. I bought the replacement metal gun barrels and a laser cut hull frames kit for it as well, but has anybody ever had ago at making one of these and if they have? Was it difficult to make. The instructions are in Polish but there are pictures that help.

Thanks

May 1941 backdating again

Post by Luca Bevilacquaback »

Hy all.
I had a 4 years period with family problems so tough that made me impossible to do any modelling at all.

Now I am trying to come back to it, albeit with much less free time than I had before.
Obviously I need all the help I can get to cut beck on research time.

I tried to select a project that would be feasible with my somewhat rusted skills, would help reduce the unfinished/unbuilt stack of kits/PE I have, and yet thrill me with something new to increase motivation and stamina.

I selected building as many 1:350 RN capital ships as possible all depicted in May 1941 (Bismarck chase days).
Hood is ultra well covered thanks to Frank Allen no question asked then (at least not yet).

To this thread the relevant questions Id like to begin with are:
1) POW as sunk: Tamiya Pow kit + WEM PE frets + 3 WEM UP launchers on top of turrets replacing PomPoms, + omission of 3 circular AA tubes at the sten + other light AA check this I remember; anything else I am missing?
2) KGW, same days: identical to the Pow above ? what about KGV teack deck colour back then ?
3) I remember reading of some dfference between KG ad POW about hull shape, just about where hull sides meet the main deck, was not that discussion in this thread ?

A warm "ciao" to everyone.
I am glad to be back

Hi Luca, re PoW, she had 8 barrel pom pom mounts on B and Y turret at the time of her sinking, not UP launchers, also, contrary to popular belief, the decks were not painted, they were left bare wood
Prince of Wales arriving at Singapore, Dec 41, note Pom Pom mounting on "B" turret

Winston Churchill on PoW for meeting with Roosevalt, Aug 41, note camo on gun barrels and bare wood deck.

The UP launchers were removed from all British Capital ships shortly after Hood was sunk and replaced with Pom Poms. Also, I have done some extensive research regarding the KGV's and have found no photographic evidence at all of any KGV having camo paint on the decks.
What Admiral Nelson really said when he put the telescope to his blind eye,,,,

No, contrary to popular belief ( ) HMS POW carried a quad pompom on her Y-turret, showing up on a photograph as late as December the eight 1941.

One close-up from IWM-collections.org.uk to see what you need to be looking for

Image

and one from Maritime Quest from the 8th of December as confirmation

Image

That's a Mk VII (quad) pompom and not a Mk VI (oct.).
