A little more progress here.

I tested the Nautilus stanchions for railing. I drilled 4mm holes in the kit holes, which are good for inserting the Nautilus parts. The Nautilus parts are again too thick to be cut with knife. Well, it is not bad as the stanchions installed are very strong.

Looks great Douglas! The stanchions look good to me, was it difficult to keep them all level when installing?

Hello Bill, thanks for your kind words.

Not quite, but the contrary, easy. However, I think it would be better to do it after the structures are attached to the deck, because the stanchions are vertical to waterline instead of the structures themselves.

Douglas, very, very impressive work. I've been considering that kit myself, since I'm very interested in WW 2 DDs and DEs, including the Fletchers. Overall, how would you rate that kit?

Now, I'm about to commit what will probably be heresy on this site. From my point of view, accuracy is fine to a point. Obviously, we don't want to build a WW 2 Essex class carrier with an angled deck. But, this is something most of us do for fun and in my humble opinion, for most of us a slavish devotion to accuracy to the point that it takes the fun out of our builds defeats the purpose. All things in moderation. For those of us that are doing this for fun, if we think it looks good, if it makes us happy with what we have accomplished and we are proud to have it on our wall or what-not shelf, then that is good enough and it doesn't matter all that much if we have a late war radar on our early war U.S.S. Fletcher.

Hi Bob, thanks for your kind words. Yes, we all here try to make our models as accurate as we could, and as detailed as we like. You got it wholly right that there is limit to what we could do, with our resources in hand, including the kit, the accessories, the reference books and photos, the skills, etc. etc.. Sometimes one would over do and got trapped in the never ending process. I fully understand what you meant, and I am on the right track, enjoying the build, haha.

How do I rate the kit ? I will give 80 out of 100. It might not be 100% accurate, but it is more or less close to accurate. With a little modification and adding a little detail, it turns to a great looking model. And if you could afford the Eduard set, excellent. The Nautilus set, I would say it is not too necessary. Bob, go get one and have it built and displayed in your home or office, you won't regret paying the money. After I finish it, I would display it in my little corner in my office. I guess my colleagues would like to come and see it.

It looks like you used a wash on the upper works. Am I correct? How are you handeling weathering on the hull?

Beside the fact that i really like this model, i absolutely agree with the things mentioned above regarding accuracy.
Nothing is more worse than being trapped in the "advanced modelers syndrome", loosing the fun and the continuity.
I would say a little artistic license is a good ingredient in a project. The most important is skill and fun.
It can be a "number one" model with a wrong antenna, but it can�t be, without skill and fun in what we �re doing.
I find it very freshening to know there are more modelers thinking the same.

I have to agree. . . but I lack skill and talent to be anywhere near accurate. I know this, so it's cool with me. I am still mostly an out of the box, follow the directions add PE, stand back and say, "Wow, look what I did!"

Then I come here, see the mind blowing detail, dedication to accuracy, and the skill set to put it all together, and I am amazed. But this just makes me try all the harder to push myself to do something new, more accurately, or neater.

OK, OK, I'm off my little soap box, and I'll shut up now.

You are right Pat, I applied a enamel wash. A very very thin one. I did the same on the hull but it is too subtle. I might need to do another run. Good to know that you like it.

Bigdaddy, love the pics of your U.S.S. North Carolina. I've got her warming up in the bull pen for this winter's building season and I hope mine turns out anywhere close to as good as yours. Any pitfalls I should be wary of in building her (I'll be doing Trumpy's 1/350), or just things I should be aware of?
