Hi Torpedo Although only 1:144 Kiev is 1m 850mm in length and makes for a big model. At 1:100 it would be well over 2m . To big for me.

Don�t forget to put some weight on the opposite side of the bridge, to counter-balance the weight you�re applying on the hull (right side). It might not be much, but it might make some difference...

Very nice build so far Dave! What is the tool you used to cut out the square openings on the superstructure? Would a tool like that enable me to cut square openings in smaller scale like 1/350 up to 1/700? It might come in handy to be able to cut openings in decks to fit inclined ladders on some model. Normaly I leave out those details because I can't cut the openings with the tools I have.

You are quite right . Although the weight at present isn't that much it may well make a difference later on . I'm with Ron on the 15th of April and I'll have the Kiev there for ballasting trials. and launch day . I just hope it doesn't take to much weight to get it down to its marks but I'll soon find out.

Hi Sylvain Auger here is the blade I use for cutting
out the openings on Kiev . Its a "Swan Morton"
surgical blade . and very sharp but only for a short period.
. As for using this type of blade for other scales.
Yes I guess it would be just as effective. But the
styrene used for Kiev is relatively soft.

An extremely fiddly frustrating complicated piece of superstructure there, probably designed by a Gulag inmate high on meths. I wouldn't tackle it Dave, you're a better man than I Gunga Dinn.

Hello Dave,
I've checked several of my books and data and figured out the Kievs had two Ka-25 "Hormone-C" SAR helicopters along with 2 guidance helicopters and 10-12 ASW helicopters (these were altered from Ka-25 in the beginning to Ka-27 later on). The Ka-27 SAR version was only ready by 1982, which means the carriers were at sea for a while by then, using the Ka-25 version for SAR. I guess it depends on which timeframe you want to present her. The SAR versions of the Ka-25 had the red and white line along their fuselage.

Thank Roel that's just the information I need . Now I can focus on a time frame. Although a little into the future I think It may be useful to look at the pennet numbers and settle for a time line on the fleet deplyment area , Another question. Was the overall paint scheme used for Kiev when deployed with the Northern Fleet dark grey . Thanks again for all your help

I don't think they used the dark colour they are using now. In most pictures it seems lighter, although it depends on light conditions too. I guess with the dark northern environment that it often looked that dark. The radomes weren't painted in light grey as they are now, so I guess it's a totally different painting scheme.

The next stage of the preliminary work on the superstructure is to build the SA-N-3 launcher platform which in sited just forward of the bridge and the after deck housing which will support the after SA-N-3 launcher and 76.2mm twin mounting
This picture shows the underside of the SA-N-3 platform and the supports

In board view of the SA-N-3 platform. Deflectors that surround the platform will be shown in a later part of the build .

Here the sides for the after platforms for the after SA-N-3 launcher and 76.2mm twin are lifted from the plan and cut to size.

The sides are prepared to accept the lower 76.2mm platform.

The lower platform in place. Note the markings for the upper platform

Splayed sides in place to support the upper platform. This platform feeds beneath the main superstructure and will be locked in with pins but will also be removable .

Tidying up beneath the after bridge platform

. All the main superstructures prepared and slotted into place

After superstructure in place. Note that the sides around the main superstructure are slightly wider as per photos of Kiev.

Next the forward SUW-N-1 deck housing, RBU ASW rocket launcher base and the raised base for the "Trap Door" radar , right forward

I hope this weekend to see my friends in Wagga that are building the Novorossiysk and when I do I shall post you some more images.
Do you have and close ups of some of the weapons or sensors yet? This is where you are really going to have fun.

Keep the images comming....

That would be superb. Your last images of Novorossiysk help me enormously to get my head around some of the methodology of the build. The radars such as "Top Sail" and "HeadLight" arrays proved to be "tricky to build for Moskva but it's never going to be any more strightforward for Kiev.

The next stage is to constuct the forward deck housings . the first being for the 76.2mm mounting and SUW-N-1 launcher.

Locating pins are inserted to the underside to ensure that the exact position is maintained during the build.

The forward "Trap Door" radar housing.

Once again pins are made use of.

Locating pins are also used for the SA-N-3 deck housing

And for the after superstucture supporting the SA-N-3 launcher and after 76.2 mounting.

All the main superstructures and larger deck housings positioned

Kiev being made ready for ballasting trials , More on this and Sundays launch /motor trials on Monday.
