Hi Dave,

Have a look at this picture of Rum Tub on a Slava class. I think that it shows the panels in the array raised on the curved surface, not recessed as you have modelled them.

What do you think?

Hi North Sea Yes looking at the photo you posted you are right . I can correct that quite easily. Thanks you so much for helping me out on this one . Just goes to show what can be seen using a better photo.

Ive altered the face of the Rum Tub ESM array to the series of raised panels
seen in the close up picture provided by Northesea. { thanks Northsea for your help much appreciated.}
All that was required was to strip the strips of styrene and replace with a series styrene panels .

Also additional fittings added to the superstructure , the largest of these ,so far
are the fore and aft Head Light illuminator radars and the smaller Owl Screech fire control arrays .

Dave,

Here's another shot of the Rum Tubs. Looks to be from the same sequence of photos, just a different angle and somewhat larger. There are two rows of faces rather than four and there appear to be 5 faces across the bottom row and 6 across the top. Each of the two rows consists of single faces with two slightly raised plates stacked vertically. Easier to see than explain. Hope this helps.

Looking good! As always, your work is inspiring!

Bob

Always happy to help Dave, though I should give the credit to Vladimir who posted the link to the picture over on the Kirov, Slava and Ushakov thread. Lots of good pictures of Bass Tilt, Top Sail etc over there if you need them.

I've been following your work closely and with more than a little fascination, partly because I hope to do a little Russian scratch building myself sometime. But that will be another story, don't wait up for it. :heh:

Hi Bob thanks for your impute . Feed back on the parts produced for Kiev is very much appreciated. I was very pleased to see the Rum Tub close up . To have others on the board helping, like yourself is truly tremendous .Over the course of the build detail photos have come to light that has made all the difference. Travelling Man even made a special trip to the Minsk to photograph a number of features that in the past had been open to interpretation and not that clear.

Hi North Sea Thank you again for your help . Since starting the Kiev thread I have had to "tweek" the construction to take on board revised information. What strikes me more about Kiev is how much different Kiev is form her sisters but making good use of the similarities that do exist. Equally the use of good photos of fittings that would be common to many Soviet warships of the period including the Kiev re- the Rum Tub. Perhaps in the not to distant future we may have an "Anatomy of the Kiev" now that would have been Heaven sent!!!

Dave, I've often thought how nice it would be to assemble all the available photos of any particular ship on a CD for people to use (I know this is done commercially - I'm talking about casually). As you've seen, with sufficient digging and multiple sources, it is possible to collect a goodly amount of modelling quality photos of any particular ship. Having them all in one location would be wonderful. Unfortunately, copyright considerations probably prohibits that although I've heard conflicting stories about the legality of such a collection if it's non-profit.

Someone else just recently posed the concept of collecting photos of a given ship in a dedicated area on this forum which would be very helpful. Again, though, copyrights probably make that a questionable undertaking.

It's a shame that each new builder has to go through the same painstaking research when it's already been done and could be easily shared. Just thinking out loud...

Regards,
Bob

Hi Guys,

Ozpirate, aka Mick, has made up such a CD based collection of pics. When I bought my slava plans from him, they came with THREE CD's. not all of Slavas, but of heaps of Russian ships and some good sound clips to.

The CD's have been a great help, of course Varyag visiting the States just recently was a huge bonus :woo_hoo:

But having said that, I think the research is good discipline and has helped me tremendously to understand both my Tico and Varyag builds a bit better.

Dave, brilliant work as always, truly inspiring. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Bob You are quite right , If the subject material for a given ship is not compiled into a single resource then yes the whole research for any given ship may well have to be repeated time and again by each modeller. Having compilations, like the "Anatomy" series or at the very least CD of ships photos {Kurt Grainers, Jonathan Evans to name but two experts in the field} which are superbly shots and well editored are a big bonus for the model builder. These are of course all taken and produced in house but compiling material that is "off the net but valuable to the model maker, then passing this on in CD form is, as you say Bob "a questionable undertaking. There is no easy answer. There are a number of very good Polish publications that provide the model maker with useful material in book form. I would say that you can never have enough material and even well researched and superbly illustrated works such as the Anatomy series will not answer all the questions. So perhaps researching in going to be for many model makers as important a task as building the model and as such should be as enjoyable. For me next to building the model nothing is more rewarding than getting material that confirms the appearance of a piece of equipment . In base terms it removes most of the guess work and the need to fall back on modellers license.

Hi Andrew Yes I fully agree Kurt Grainers superb Yaryag CD is a must for any model maker embarking on a Slava. Also you have hit the nail on the head and referred to research as a "good discipline. It is part of what model building is all about. Some model makers will not embark on a project until all the research is in place. I guess if I relied on that train of thought then I would never embark of a build. Looking forward to more of your Slava posts.

Hi Dave

Just looking through the pics I took (http://www.shekouonline.com/minskworld/index.html) and can see that the design on the Minsk is slightly different. Lots of pics there showing it but 6879.jpg shows it very well

Image

Absolutely awesome work though. Can't wait to get my hands on your book when I get back over to the UK!!!

Hiya all Yes I supplied 3 disk full of images to Andrew but one thing I must say is that all the disks are in fact DVD size disks and all images come of the internet.
98% Modern Russian Navy images
Current collection stands at 11.8gigs - 27,457 files and still collecting and sorting and more sorting and even more sorting........... :Mad_6:
Mind you the collection of images taken at Hubertus Model Boat Club stands at 11 DVD disks and started disk 12 two weeks ago. More than 14000 images of our model boat club.

Hi Steve good to hear from you . Thanks for posting the photos of the Rum Tub on Minsk . As I have said no two ships of the same class are the same but I have noticed that there are a number of major arrays and weapon fits on Kiev and Minsk that have had a "Chinese make over". It is hard to tell with the likes of the ESM array but all information is accepted with my thanks. By the way enjoy the book!!

Hi Chris Glad you managed to get back into MW. All the windows along the side of the superstructure aren't glazed . The bridge areas are . As for the completion date , I'm hoping it will be November !!!

Dave,

I truly appreciate your attention to detail, your superb craftsmanship, and the effort you have made to give us your tutorial on how to scratchbuild a model ship. I have learned quite a few useful tips which will come in handy when I get into the thick of my build. Thanks!

By the way, did you look closely at the images on the site dexter_klm referenced? There is an answer to one of your earlier questions there. A photo shows the large crane hoisting a Bazalt/Sandbox, apparently in preparation for loading a launcher (or removing it from the launcher). Some good pictures of the rigging on the crane there. That would make a nice diorama on your model.
