Great examples, Dave! And I suppose that given R/C ships spend most of their life on static display, a crew on board would not go too amiss either

If it wasn't for the sky blue canopies those shots of CVN-68 would look real! Excellent photography skills, not to mention modeling skills!

Ah Good question I haven't thought of that but like any good house keeper I shall most certainly be changing the Wall paper in the near futuremitchell300 wrote:Dave Wooley.

Go with figures Dave!
I would also investigate--were I you-- in having the model in a csse to protect against dust/damp etc....
If you are using figures- then maybe you could have a above/below waterline display wehn the model is 'ashore' static-
that way it is a model 'at sea' even when its at home- simply chaging the viewing angle will allow the observer to the underwater area.
just a thought!

Hi Jim never thought of that Interesting option . True the " case" is seriously being considered. but the cost to have one made for Kiev is quite high .Non the less there remains more avenues to pursue with the hope of getting good value and at reasonable cost.JIM BAUMANN wrote:Go with figures Dave!

Hi Chris It would appear that the majority opinion is pro figures. I have a photo of a museum model of Kiev and it is devoid of figures, it looks superb but rather sterile. Question can a large scale working model also become a diorama ? Or are dioramas by their very nature static?boatman wrote:HI Dave yes i aggree go with the figures im goin to on my nimtz in my opinon it brings the model to life

Dave, your work on this model can only be described by superlatives and there has certainly been nothing that I could add in terms of research or photos for you, and certainly your skill level can be matched by only a few people on this planet. What particularly impresses me is how 'clean' the model is and by clean I mean the crispness of the paint job (my great weakness) and the lack of any evidence of glue having been used! The only contribution I can make is to the discussion about crew figures for the model. I have always felt that for aircraft carriers, the planes and deck equipment should not be permanently attached but be available for repositioning. This creates problems for transportation but allows for more interesting visuals, since the model will be put on the water several times. I agree that crew figures give life to a model but would be loath to permanently attach them as well, particularly on the flight deck. As a compromise I glue figures to the non-flight deck areas -- catwalks, stern, superstructure -- and have some glued onto the tractors -- but for the flight deck set up groups of three or four figures (e.g. pilots) glued to a thin plastic card painted flight deck grey. These groupings can be moved or removed as desired (danger: in a stiff wind they can be blown over the side). In 1:144 there are not too many figures available -- Preiser's NATO pilot's and ground crew kit in 1:144 seems to be the most useful -- and carriers of course have huge crews. Ted Parr's Nimitz has over 300 crew and the way he made them is certainly much less costly than spending on Preiser kits -- you would need 16 of them to reach 300 figures! Anyway, continued good fortune with your build.

hi dave regards removin crew figs i am goin with the idea that i used on all my models an that is glue figs on catwlks an other areas where difficult to get to but out on the flightdeck they wil be removeble as i will drill into the figs an aircraft an yellow gear an fit tiny steel pins an a hole in deck so said item can be dropped in or removed BUT it wont come off when at sea sailin. Dont know if this is the idea for you but at least it works an while i think of it any chance of a pic or two of her engine room of motors an unversal jionts as i have looked through the build thread an did not see any pics or i may have missed them but if you cant no worries

Hi Peter . I was also puzzeled by how to ensure the figures remain in place but allow scope for rearranging .You have solved another problem . Thanks

Dan it is a pleasure to here from you. It's been a while since we last communicated. I frequently look at your model and I agree the method that you have used does indeed work well .As you say the deck scenario can in effect be altered which will allow more scope. I have pin pointed 5 areas that could provide some visual interest other than the ship as a whole. Yes I have had 1:144 Preiser figures for some time and I've yet to prepare these as Russian deck crew. As a matter of genuine interest would you show your model on this site it would be greatly appreciated and admired as one of the best examples of Carrier model building I have ever come across? Thanks again for your imputeDan Linton wrote:Dave, your work on this model can only be described by superlatives and there has certainly been nothing that I could add in terms of research or photos for you, and certainly your skill level can be matched by only a few people on this planet. Well I just had to have ago Figures that is!!
Here are the Preiser 1:144 scale air force figures.

I followed all the suggestions and started on the flesh areas first.

This was followed by the clothing On Kiev the crew wore white overalls or dark blue overalls with dark blue hats , aircrew orange flying suit , white helmet and olive green may west Not to sure about the colour of the may west ? officers white top black trousers and a dark blue forage cap .

Three views of a temporary deck arrangement . I would say it does bring the model to life .

Lots more figures to paint .
Dave Wooley more to follow

Looks like your planes are about to have a dragrace
Crewmembers indeed do bring life to a model, especially on workships and naval vessels.
Greetings Josse

Hi Russ no I am going to adopt Dan Linton's idea of having a base painted the same shade as the surface the figure is resting on .Its works on Dan's model and as Dan has said the deck arrangement can be re-set .Figures are a new venture for me but the big fear is that if the effect is not applied in the right way it can be counter productive .Still learning but I'm a willing pupil and open to ideas.russclark wrote:well done they look great.they definitely make things come to life .one question,do they stand up without having to glue them down.
