There are no clear, or close-up photos of a late war Asashio type that I'm aware of. But, since the bridges are essentially identical, it is not unreasonable to assume that the late war configurations would be close. This is the best late war pic of Kasumi that I have but, despite the caption, it's not firmly dated as '45, could be '44.

one last question.. its on destroyer railings. there are railings that the bottom half look to be made of some type of mesh. Is this mesh made of rope or a type of metal mesh, like a chain link fence? two of the photos i have are from Gakken and the last is of the landing ship No.1 class.

I have no idea, though given the state of raw material even prior to the war, I would think it rope mesh. Also, it appears to be removable, because placement seems to vary between ships, and locations.

Pics of Kasumi are exceedingly rare...I've only seen two: this one and a crop of a larger aerial shot of the 1940 Review.

If you're looking to make space, I'll give a good home to any Waterline Series kits you want to get rid of.

Thx for posting, Timmy. I believe the other two DDs buried with Yanagi in that seawall are Fuyuzuki and Suzutsuki,

Just in case no one has seen this elsewhere, the new PitRoad tooling for Shimakaze is now available at HLJ. Due late November this year:

Some other views of the new Shimakaze kit, courtesy of HLJ. Btw, it is highly improbable that she actually wore hull markings at her commissioning. She'd have been the only one to do so after late 1942.

Hey Dan,

I hope that Shimakaze kit was worth the wait. I'll probably get 2.

Dan et al.,

I thought Shimakaze was a class of just one ship? I know it resembles some of the other classes. Perhaps my information was in error? (It's kind of unexpected to see a kit come out for a ship with no possibility of offering sister ship kits.)

Shimakaze was to be the prototype for future IJN fleet destroyers. But she was too complex to produce in the numbers needed during the war, hence the Matsu class. Even that design was later simplified into the Tachibana class. That said, I am presuming the reason Fred is wanting two is for the "as-built/as-sunk" comparison for this one-off ship.

You basically hit the nail on the head, Dick J. If I don't screw up the first build and need the second kit, I'll try to do an as built version. Many thanks to Dan K for doing an excellent review of the kit on this site. Dan, if you read this, where can I get 1/700 IJN 12.7 cm/50 type 3 brass gun barrels?

On another exciting note, it appears that two 1/350 kits of the Shimakaze are in the offing, one from Fujimi and one from Max Factory. Max Factory has done anime figurines and I believe that the Shimakaze will be their 1st ship kit. Fingers crossed.

I've responded to Fred offline but, for any that are also interested, Rainbow produces such barrels (RB7055- 12pcs), which are the same as included in their comprehensive Shiratsyu set. HobbyEasy carries them: http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/lei8b8 ... zn92x.html

There's been an update on the Max Factory website regarding its pending 1/350 Shimakaze. Development is moving along. From the Google translation, it appears that it may be, in part, a snap together model, but I'm not sure about that. Maybe they started with that in mind but have changed opinions on it. I'm just not sure. The detail is looking good. It will be in its 1943 configuration.

More photos of the Max Factory Shimakaze are now up on Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10341418

ETA October.

Note apparently you can swap out the properly-scaled aft guns for the anime version.
