Doug,

That's good that you liked the book ...

Steve ... thanks for posting that photo ...

Sorry for the delay in responding .... but I've been out of power since last Saturday and my family and I needed to move to my house on Cape Cod "for the duration" ... NOT GOOD IN CONNECTICUT! No power, phone or internet for 7 days and it's still off!

Steve - Thanks for the photo and the website. There are some great detail shots there. The photo you posted gives a good view of the heater assembly just forward of the Thunderbolt mount. The few photos I have seen show that the RON 29 boats in the Med had the heater installed, so I plan to make one on my model. Al Ross sent me a couple of drawings of the heater since it is pretty hard to see in most photos. :thumbs_up_1:

Garth - Sorry to hear of your problems with the big storm. One advantage of living where I do in Colorado is that we have our utility lines underground so we almost never lose power and, if we do, it is not for long.

Help !!! getting back into model building after 40 years

Post by JCurtis »

As a kid, I slapped together models, never worrying about detail or authenticity.

Now over 40 years later, I am looking for something to keep me busy during down time. I have had a desire to get back into building models again. I have had a Lindberg 1:32 scale PT 109 sitting in storage for years. I never started it and about a year ago I tried to sell it here on line. I had one person interested but he never got back to me, so I held onto it.

Now I am thinking, BUILD IT ! but here is the rub... I want to do it as a static model and the kit was designed for motors. So that being said, there are only two rudders and two props and two shafy supports. I think the rudders and props are too big to use, and I can't see casting a third prop and rudder from these. besides, I have never cast anything. Does anyone here know where I can locate useable scaled props and rudders for a 1/32 scale PT boat?

Curtis, it sounds like you have one of the old Lindberg P.T. 109 kits. These things are little more than motorized toys by today's standards and the detail on them is laughable. Unless the cost is an issue, I'd look around and try to find one of Italieri's P.T. 596 kits. Great detail and very accurate. Also a very friendly build. I know, I'm building it now. The kit has been discontinued, but if you post a WTB thread here and on some of the other ship building forums, I bet you can score one. You might also try Evilbay.

I think if you attempt to go forward with the Lindberg kit you will find yourself very disappointed by the result. I can remember seeing one of those kits built up and by today's standards it is nothing short of primitive. No real detail to speak of. Even the .50 Cal. gun mounts are so basic that they are toy like.

Do yourself a favor and put that dinosaur on Evilbay and score the Italieri kit. You'll thank yourself in the morning.

Italeri showed off their 1:35 PT-109 prototype at the Nuremberg Toy Fair this year. It's also listed on their web site as a release for this year. Judging by the photos there much work left to be done. I'm really looking forward to seeing this release. Thanks to Bob for the heads up on this new kit.

Thanks for posting those two shots of the new Italieri P.T. 109. I'd seen a couple of pictures of if, but not those. Looks like a good starting point for any 103 Class boat from the '42 - '43 period. Definitely be a good match with the 596 boat I'm working on right now. Got to have it, just have to figure out how to finesse the matter with the C-in-C.

PT Boats have long been one of my favorites, my most recent builds in this type were conversions of Revell's PT 109 kit into late war boats. As it usually works out, as soon as you get something done the kit makers will bring out the same type just as Italeri has done with their 1/35th scale offering. While I really dig the subject the ol thing that makes me shy away is the large scale price tag. Of course, living in Las Vegas, if I ever hit a good jackpot, you know it will be on the top of my shopping list.

Image

That is part way along in the process, as you can tell by all the white styrene, I made lots of changes.

Image

After the intial base coats they look a little different from one another.

Image

One is equipped with four roll off racks, 37mm cannon, 20mm Oerlikon and 5 inch rocket racks on the bow with scratched up 40 MM Bofors on the fantail.

Image

The other has similar mountings with the aft set of roll off racks replaced with depth charge racks.

I am planning on adding to the PT line up with a few other 80 footers, one with 40 MM Bofors fore and aft as well as .50 caliber mounts sprouting from several positions to replicate the heavy gun boat type that was made up for the "barge busting" role. I am also hankering to kitbash one of the 80 footers into a faux 78 footer. That one promises to be a real trip with the differences in cabin arrangements and shapes.

Mr. Chun,
I don't know if you monitor this forum anymore, but I just found this website and thought I would give it a chance to try and get in touch with you.

Regarding your most recent publication "American PT Boats in World War II, Volume II", you are to be congratulated on your efforts to make a book that is organized in a fresh way from other PT Boat books and includes numerous rare photographs. It is a great companion piece to your first book. However, considering the retail price of this book I was extremely disappointed in the very poor editing and production of this expensive book. I assume this was most likely the fault of the publishing company. The number of misspellings, grammatical errors, and sentences that simply do not make sense are too numerous to count. Arguably the most important feature of this book are the photographs, but numerous photographs are mislabeled, repeated elsewhere with a different description (e.g. same ship pictures labeled in 2 separate places as different ships), or missing entirely. One of the ones I was most interested in was on page 150: the bottom picture is not the one the caption describes, and is actually just a repeat of the picture on page 100. This was really disappointing because I wanted to see the picture that caption discusses. Is there a way I could get a copy of this photograph?

I actually wrote to Schiffer with a list of the photo / caption errors, but they never responded. However, I noticed that the book is not available on Amazon anymore. Did they stop printing it?

Brian Alexander

I have a couple of PT 109 questions for the experts. Are the rounded "domes" at the front of the torpedo tubes the noses of the torpedos or a cover? What color should they be? Was the ensign flying from the radio mast? I have been using Steve Sobieralski's model as reference. Are there any changes I should make to this model? Thanks, John

The "domes"on the Revell kit tubes are the covers to protect the torpedoes from sea water. They should be the same color as the boat.

Does anyone here have plans for Elco's A frame transport cradle for the 80 footers? I would like to make one for the Italeri boat.

Thanks Al. Could you give me the length of the main center line piece? Then I can extrapolate the rest. All the numbers are too blurry to read. I didn't see this plan offered at Costal Forces, or is it part of one of the sets?
