Helicopter Landing Markings Question
During the late 1980s deployment, did the Enterprise have the round Helicopter landing spot markings on her deck as I have seen on other carriers? I'm almost ready to get my decals done and need to make sure I didn't forget anything. Any help or references to show her deck would be GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED!!!!

I found these two shots over on Navsource from 1982 and 1985. There's a gap in photos from 1985-1991. There's a one from 1989 but it doesn't show the deck.

I�d like to introduce myself to the Forum but in particular this thread, as you can see I�ve been a member for some time, but only recently have been able to log on and post.
I was a crew-member of the USS Enterprise from 1980-1984. I reported aboard the �Big E� while she was in Puget Sound Naval shipyard over going the extensive overhaul that changed from the �beehive� to �conventional� island and radar. I was also on the subsequent 82-83� WestPac, and but for the untimely passing of my father would have went on the 84�. I worked in the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department.
With my oldest son joining the Marines last summer, I now have a room to move into and start building models again. I love ships from this era of the Cold War and battleships�
I have the 1978 and 1982/83 WestPac Cruise books for reference as well as some personal photos (funny how we never seem to take them when we�re there).
As a fun note: I bought the Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise the day it came into my local hobby shop in the summer of 84� less than two months after I got out. The owner only agreed to pre-order it for me if he could sell it to me for cost� after all these years it is still in the garage only about 5% started. Kind of a reflection on what I think of this "craft" kit...
I hope to be able to join all of you in conversation about this great ship!!!

Would you happen to have photos of the hangar, before and after the overhaul ??
If so, a lot of us, fellow modellers, would be very very interested to see them posted in this topic.

I'll see what I have when I get settled in. Honestly Bert Kinzey's Detail and Scale is the best resource for what you're interested in. I do a lot of research and yes, some stuff is not really covered well. Concerning the hanger; there was no change at all during the overhaul.
As far as resuming the Enterprise build, that is not even on my radar right now. You're encouragement is welcome though. I'm praying Trumpeter (or Dragon) will release a 1/700 modernized Enterprise, but that won't happen unless I spend 300+ hrs converting the Revell 1/720 right???? Seriously, I've spent a ton of money collecting the parts and details (I actually bought the ORIGINAL GMM Enterprise PE set and then 20 years later bought the UPDATED GMM set!!!) But I just don't have the gumption to start right now. Currently I'm trying to muddle through Trumpeters new Renown.

The B. Kinsey book is a valid reference, but VERY dated. The digital age is here, and I have a superb photo DVD on the 'E' which includes almost 100 pictures of the ship still in the 'beehive' rig, and plenty more images post 1980s to present day. tamiya enterprise 2001 fit??
hi all,
i seem to have caught the carrier bug,
once i've completed my abraham lincoln i'd quite like to do tamiyas enterprise in her 2001 fit with cvw 8 aboard, my query is what needs to be done to get her to her 2001 fit and what year is she set in in the kit?

The Tamiya kit was released in 1984 so it "basically" represents the Enterprise in her earliest post 79-82 refit configuration (sans the liberty launch on the stern that is illustrated in the instruction drawings)
The ship pretty much stayed this way until the Enterprise transferred back to the east coast in 91'. I'm not an expert on the 2001 fit, but it should be minimal "scratching"

I spent two years on ENTERPRISE as the Deck Department Head from 1995-1997 and one of my responsibilities was to paint the ship; so am intimately familiar with her external configuration. The kit dates to a 1982 configuration and so it needs a lot of updates. It also has errors even for the 1982 configuration. While this is not an exhaustive list, here are some challenges with the kit:
- The real hangar doors are not corrugated but are multi-part solid panels that overlap as the retract to the forward side of the elevator opening
- The Sea Sparrow launchers in the kit are grossly too large, there was never a Sea Sparrow launcher on the starboard side aft.
- The port forward CIWS sponson was enlarged in the late 1980�s for SRBOC launchers.
- The CIWS mount amidships outboard the island and the one on the port quarter have been in enclosed housings since the early 1990�s. There is a SRBOC launcher outboard the island next to the CIWS mount. Post 2001 the SRBOC was removed.
- The port side boat was a motor whale boat until 1997 when it was replaced with a slewing arm davit and two zodiac boats (stored stern to stern). Look at a DDG 51 class for a similar arrangement.
- The ship had a new stern dock added in 1996 and enlarged in 1997. It has two accommodation ladders.
- The fantail layout is fictitious. Missing is the platform for jet engine testing, the control booth and the JP-5 fuel purifier.
- The port sponsons are fairly accurate and are numbered from bow to stern 2, 4 (the boat deck), 6, 8 and 10. 10 has a lot more stuff on it in reality including a 55 gal drum rack, paint locker and a SRBOC deck above it. The starboard sponsons are numbered 1, 3, 5 and 7. 1 and 5 are missing all of the underway replenishment winches/padeyes/hoses etc. There is no boat on sponson 5
- Lose the garbage shoots on the aft sponsons.
- There are no doors from the fantail to these sponsons, but pass-throughs
- The hull is missing bollards just above the boot topping. The recessed bollards are present and correctly represented. The protruding bollards are missing.
- The overall shape of the island and the deck houses is correct. But the kit configuration on the bridge and the flag bridge is incorrect; the forward bulkhead does not jut out into the bridge. Also there is a pass through between pri-fly and the base of the former beehive.
- There is a lot of missing girder detail under the flight deck including ventilation ducting.
- Three hawse pipes are missing on the bow
- There have been a multitude of changes in antenna configuration especially the addition of SATCOM domes
- The approach radar aft of the Island sits on a solid plate structure since at least the early 1990s
- The ship still has the bow bridle arrestors (the horns)
- By 2001 all elevators were solid plate and no longer and open grid (originally designed to withstand the over-pressurization of a nuclear blast).
The good news is that the general shape of the ship is right, the flight deck is good, the rudders, shafting and screws are accurate.

I am grasping at straws Iam looking for the part numbers for the mk29's and the guidence raders for them I did not keep it when I was done if any help can be given I am in your debt.I need them for my Turnman I did not not think to cast them when I had them

The MK 29 Parts are: B33, E28, E30 (X2), E36 (X2) & E37 (X4)
The directors are: D31 (X4)

Hello everyone. My grandpa served on the Enterprise during the Vietnam war. In a few months he will turn 65 and I thought it would be nice to build a model of it for him (He's 65 and the Enterprise is CVN-65, get it?
). I am getting the Tamiya kit and I want to make it look like it did back in 1969 when he first served on it. I am still in planning and trying to find the aircraft and deck vehicles for it. Can anyone tell me the type and number of deck vehicles it would have had back then, or maybe link me to where the question has been answered before? Are they pretty similar to modern ones? Also, does anyone have any good detail photos of the "beehive" radar array or the mast? I am not finding a lot of them on the internet. Thanks in advance.
