Carl if you place side by side two carriers of the same class then the difference of the 1/700 with the 1/720 is noticeable. In case of carriers belonging to different classes then you can t tell if there is a difference or not.

Nektarios is correct I think if they are not displayed together you will not see a difference. I tried to show it in this pic. Hope it shows the difference enough for you. The 720th does not have the safety netting cut off though. Thank for the kind comments.

My battle group diorama is going to consist of a 1/720 scale carrier and four 1/700 scale escorts. You really cannot notice a difference because all the escorts are different sizes, but I would imagine if there were 2 carriers, one 1/700 and one 1/720 you would notice.

Scott, have you decided yet on what kind of base you are going to display your diorama? For example...what dimensions it will have? I'm curious because I'm planning on building a diorama just like yours sometime in the future and it would be interesting to see how the more experienced builders do it.

I really appreciate the extra details that you've added. At first I though, "Who changed the hull number on my Sampson model?"

The amidships details like the Unrep crane support bars and the inclined ladders are very important and didn't come with the kit, did they? Nice!

You extended the hangar didn't you? Looks like it.

Did you have some trouble around the vents on the forward stack? I did on my Sampson. While trying to sand the seam at the top of the stack, I sanded some of the detail off of the vents, there.

This was a nice, new surprise, this morning. Wonderful!

Carl, no, those didn't come with the kit. All the PE (including the ladders) are from the GMM set and all the rest is just stretched sprue.

Interestingly, the same happened to me on the forward stack. Hence the, well, irregular shading of the vents. I wanted to give the ship a 'real' look, including the dirt caused by the exhausts and cut a brush really short and used the dust from a carbon pencil to brush it onto the vents. That didn't come out as I had planned and with the missing edges from the forward vents...

I did extend the hull by 1mm and the hangar by nearly 1.5cm. The added VLS launchers had to be sanded until they were almost entirely flat and the little hut where the diesel generator sits had to be enlarged, too. This was what it looked like:


Adding all the details was a challenge and only possible because there are a lot of USN ship photos online. And I also found myself coming back here to look at pictures of your Sampson. Excellent model! And I still don't know how you manage to give your models perfectly clean paint jobs!

..................Trick Photography and lots of smoke and mirrors. I have a "Despeckle" feature in my photo editing software that comes in handy sometimes, too.

My Sampson finish is pretty rough, actually. I used Tamiya's spray can primer at first and it left a pretty rough surface which I had to try and sand smooth between a lot of the molded-in details. Lesson learned.

I used some of the Pit-Road PE set #139 on my DDG.

I didn't know that the diesel was in the shack on the back. That's nice to know. I thought maybe that's where the BBQ grill and Smoker were because of the vent stack, there.

Be sure to show us the water base, when she's done!

Both builds are just incredible. If they entered in the same contest probably the judjes would have a hard time deciding which is the better one.

Great builds by both, with fine attention to details. I think many of you have used Starfighters Decals. I am considering getting the Carrier Air Wing 8 : http://starfighter-decals.com/70067-car ... 82005.html
