It really isn't difficult to cram bazillions of tiny details into a CAD model - once you have the plans and photographs (the hard part is learning how to get the %^@*^$ program to do what you want). However, it is impossible to put all of that detail into a physical model at any reasonable scale.

The real trick is creating a realistic physical model at the desired scale, including what details are practical. As your posts show, you are a master at this! I am amazed that you get as much detail in as you do at 1:144. When I look at the model pictures it looks just about as real as photos of the actual ship. It is a beautiful model, and that makes it a work of art.

Thank you Russ . I recall a comment that was made on another thread , reference to the lack of resin fittings for warships at 1:144 scale as apposed to say 1:96 or 1:72. For me the appeal is just that , as you know only to well making fittings has its own rewards. I would like to think that more modellers would have ago but realistically this is not always possible for one reason or another .

Hi DrPR Thank you. Although I have no knowledge of CAD other than what I see on this site, I can understand the huge benefit to modelling or pattern making that using such a program can give. I note that CAD generated pictures are now becoming stock in trade of a number of model making magazines and I really do stand in awe at the level of detail that can be incorporated . However you are right in saying that it would be almost impossible to translate 100% of a highly detailed CAD model into a genuine hard model at say 1; 200 or even 1:100 scale. For my own purpose and apart from producing simple "sketches� and using relative scale as a guide I think in 3D when I'm developing the model. But one of the tricks is being aware of what to leave off with out diverting too much from trying to replicate the fitting. In other words knowing where to draw the line.

Hi Norberto Yes KIEV is getting closer to completion. At the moment I have the superstructure detached and have just finished fitting all the RAS gear. Also I have been fitting larger lettering for the ships name plates. I have also ordered {at Jim Baumann's suggestion} a material that will secure firmly, figures and aircraft to the deck. Next job is to finish the timber mounting board. The next set of pictures will be I HOPE of the competed model but I may just find to odd fitting that needs to be made. I am endeavoring to finalize the whole project by the end of January

A beaut bit of construction Dave!! The sequence of build pic's is really helpful for those wanting 2 build similar RAS setups. Gives good ideas for making other navies RAS gear as well.
I'm glad I build in 1/72 !! Cause that is just 2 small !!

Yes he said he was hoping 2 catch up with ya!! It was me that corrupted him 2 the darkside(1/72 scale!!) I am hoping 2 catch up with him at the TF72 annual regatta ((Dec) in Canberra this year) he should have the Slava running by then and LB should be 99% finished (maybe...)

Ah the $64000 question . Hi Norberto good to hear from you . Yes I have not one but two projects ready to roll once the slipway/slipways becomes vacant. One is essentially a project for the Model Boats magazine the other my own . I have yet to decide how I am going to manage this but I can say that my own project is at an advanced stage of preparation and is the Russian Frigate Steregushchiy . So here it is , at least one of the projects .
It's a new ship differing markebly from older Soviet warship designs and offers something different . It will be to the scale of 1;100. As they say the "cat's out the bag"

The new Russian FFG's are certainly modern looking compared 2 the rest of the Russian ships!! Show's the massive gap in ship building/replacement with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Hi Bruce Good to hear from you. Yes 1:72 would be a "challenging scale" and as it is a working model would no doubt perform better but I need to think of what is ahead of me as I do have to make room for two builds. This model caught my imagination as a departure from the old Soviet doctrine of ships brisling with radar arrays and rocket launches, to a very modern and in some ways elegant design.
