1/700 HMS Ark Royal Aircraft Carrier 1939 SRP $62.95
NEW TOOL! The HMS Ark Royal was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that served during WWII. Seeing one of the most active naval theatres of the war, the carrier could carry 72 aircraft and 80 mounted guns. Kit consists of over 310 parts, including two-piece hull, photo-etched, three aircraft, display stand and engraved name plate.
It will be interesting to see how it compares to Aoshima's offering.

Is it a good kit? I always liked these big destroyers.
It seems to be. I have two versions in the stash, and I like what I see, even if it comes only as a full hull kit.

Some background: This tooling was originally issued by a small Japanese firm known as Hobbyworld in 2008 as Akizuki 1942. It was subsequently released again under the Monochrome label, in both 1942 and 1944 versions. There were also limited edition versions of each with a fret of photo etch. A third version was released as Suzutsuki, with her simplified, post damage bridge. I don't know if there was/is a relationship between the two companies.

Trumpeter acquired the tooling for a brief while, and recently sold it to Wave. Wave released an optional '42 or '44 Akizuki version earlier this year, and now is releasing Fuyuzuki, which is a Flight II version, with different funnel ventilation, deck, and AA arrangements. So, theoretically, now any of the twelve sisters can be built.

:woo_hoo: very cool. i want it. iron dogs!

Couple of hull issues. On the drawing plans the ship is missing its boot topping. Looks very strange... You can tell by the launch ladders ending like few meters above water line as per drawing. Bizarre detail to miss. And while on the hull the torpedo net booms are missing also, they are a good reference point for the height of the boot topping... :Oops_1:

The book on German BC by Gary Staff has renders which do not have boot stripes, as well as a couple dry dock photos which also lack boot stripes. The Hobby Boss Seydlitz looks to be replicating post Jutland mods, which included removing torpedo nets, and modifying the secondary battery enclosures.

I'm pretty sure this was universal, but US warships had no boot stripes in the age of coal. Only after oil fired ships came along and the oil residue on the water started fouling the waterline did the boot stripe come into use.

Definitely not universal. USS Alabama BB-8 had one. See: http://navsource.org/archives/01/009/010807d.jpg for 1907, and there's another shot of her in drydock in 1900 on Navsource (download, not URL unfortunately) that also shows a boot stripe. THe presence/absence of boot stripe, and exact height of the top of the antifouling red, seems to have varied from ship to ship. (See discussion topic on the Camoflage & Coatings board)

Is that an outward explosion hole in Alabama's hull, or just a puncture hole in the original photo?? :wave_1:

Looking at the smaller sized photo it appears to be puncture holes in the photo. :wave_1:

Just picked the Griessmeier book on german battlecruisers from my shelf. The photo of Seydlitz (no date given) in dock shows no boot topping. But, the hull above waterline level was quite badly fouled. However, somewhere around the top of this fouled line, it seems to be a thin black line around the hull...

Wrote a long reply like why they had a boot topping but figured I post a pic of the pic you posted in better resolution so you can see the boot topping on it in more detail.. But in summary, all German capital ships had boot topping lines in that era already and there is no real reason once you use common sense why Hobby Boss omitted. Unless they made a mistake.

Wikipedia... gray boot topping probably worn out over usage... and antifouling below. Clear difference.

Anyway here is how I would do it (below photoshop I threw together) and suggest people at least question HobbyBoss. Their 1/350 Victorian colors Mikasa says grey hull and ochre masts, which the ship didnt carry according to most research (Black and Black or Black and White would be more accurate).

Zvezda is announcing its new Poltava 1/350, but I'm not sure if it's only a rebox from Sevastopol or if there are some differences among them.

Is there any indication that some of these new Hobby Boss kits will make their way into 1:700 as well?
