The conditions at the Boat Museum for Kiev�s day of Commissioning were almost perfect , no wind , no sunshine and not a drop of rain , cold almost Northern Fleet conditions .

Now after four long years the moment I have been waiting for . Decks cleared save one solitary Forger A just in case , power on and away we go .





To say that I was pleased was an understatement I had a smile from ear to ear and to top it all the Admiral made it to the society meeting and the commissioning . My day was complete.

Now to reinstate the flight deck activity in preparation for Kiev�s final outing the Fleet Air Arm Museum .

Will all the electronics remain in her when you give her to the museum, since they'll be (I assume) putting her on static display only?

Hi Tim Thanks . only the motors will remain all the rest will be removed. Speed controllers and RX are mounted on detachable trays which lift clear . The four drive motors are under the deck aft and difficult to remove . I really don't mind leaving the motors behind. But for me is was a special memorable day ,

Dave I really enjoyed following this thread of the construction of your model but when the commission pictures come up I was a little disappointed with the first image, it looked nose heavy. Your model looked low in the water and when I saw the next image below it confirmed my thoughts. Are you running a bit heavy for a reason or do you need to re-balance your model? Sorry for the negative but I can only go on what I see in the pictures. Otherwise great work mate. I only hope one day my model looks half as good.

Hi Mick thanks for your observations. yes it was essential that I ran slightly below the waterline in the event that there was any cross winds on the water as this stretch of water is susceptible to these effects, as it was I compensated and the hull behaved impeccably but it could have easily gone the other way .As you know mike working models of carriers are highly prone to windage even a slight breeze can induce a heel especially in a turn .hence the reason I cleared the decks and increased the depth slightly. As you know this was a one off exercise and to have had Kiev rolling from one side to another would have made the first and last outing very difficult. Perhaps when you prepare you Kuznetzov for it�s trial runs you may well have to consider the problem of side windage .

dave i tip my hat to you,i very fine study of a worthy subject.she looks great in the water and will look even better in the museum.it is a shame that most people who will view her will have no idea how much work,research and time was spent to build her.well done

Hi Ron Thank for shooting those at different angles from my own , I think the last one is a cracker as it shows the effects of the bow wave around the hull and that's the one I was trying to get.

Hi Russ thanks for you kind comments always appreciated. I have to say that on the day it was a collaborative effort [the only reward was a tot of the hard stuff all round } on the part of many helpers, all of which I am indebted to. Getting the model moved from the lecture theatre to the water side and back was no easy task and. Then transport from my home to the Boat Museum and back as my own vehicle is too small to accommodate the model. With out this genuine support I would have been high and dry as they say.
As for viewing models well you are right the viewing public would of course have no idea as to how much effort goes into projects like this but if they can gain something even if its only to say "so that's what the other side had in the Cold War� than it has done its job.

Hi Andrew good to hear from you . Yes it would have been opportune if you could have been over just a week later . There where many excellent models to be seen at the seminar, all at various stages of construction along with their builders . including the great man himself Jim Woods.
