Hi Rob,

Good inspiration for me to make a start on Admiral Edwin.

Always good to have someone a head me in similar build

Thanks Andrew, I hope this build log gets a couple more of these ships out there, Whilst I do not mind the new "stealthy warships" of today, I like the ships of the cold war that bristled with armament and sensors, not only are they a challenge to build, they look good.

Well I got some advice from a friend in TF72 as he had experience with an FFG7 hull with a warp in it, and I have to say it has worked brilliantly, and it's simple as can be.

For reference for anyone who encounters the same issue.
I put the hull on a board and screwed the bow into the boards to hold it where I wanted it.
I then used weights in the aft section of the ship to put it slightly past level to over compensate for the warp.
Gauging before where the warp started to happen, I put cross members on the hull to form the shape and araldited them in.

24hrs later I removed the weights and let it move back freely to its position, I�ve checked it over a few hours and it has stayed the same now. I've put the spirit level to the hull, the warp is now so minor that from focsle to stern 3.45m (11.5ft) it�s less than width of a toothpick. So I'm a happy man and will continue building.

HI THERE im lookin forward to this build as well an im not tryin to tell you how to build but i really think your hull jiont seems to me in my opinion a bit on the weak side an id hate to see this lovely build break in half when you lift her when finished an she's fitted togeather i may be wrong on this an i hope i am ( i hope you are not offended by my comment) is it possible to see your hull jionts ends so to see how you have held it togeather but as far i can see you have two bolts an nuts up the top an some brass rod an S/S rod to align the hull but will the rods stop the jiont from opening when the model is lifted ?

Hi Guys, thanks for the concern over the W/T bulkheads, I�ve even had email about it aswell. The hull will be fine though.
Let me explain why I beleive so, I did put a bottom male female joint into it, solid half an inch in diameter.
To test, I have put the bow on the ground, lifted it up by its stern, and then proceeded to shake the sh!t out of it up and down and sideways. I then put the stern down and lifted it up by its bow and repeated the manoeuvre, no cracking appearing in the bulkheads and I have not resined them yet or put in the rest of supporting beams. This is not the first time I have worked on ships joined in two halves, yes this is the biggest, but only by a meter. I�ve also done a Typhoon submarine, 1:72 scale, it is 2.4m long and 34cm beam. The hull was originally quite flimsy, although it is in one piece. The point to this, is that it is a free flooding hull, if you filled it with water and then lifted it, without a doubt it would have broken in two because of her sheer weight when flooded. I put in several beams along the length of the hull and across her beam and she is now quite strong. Strong enough that completely flooded you can lift her up at each end (it takes two men, one cannot lift this submarine when is flooded) and the water will just poor out of her with no damage to the hull.

If you don't know already I picked up a Kirov class hull also from Tim and transported it home (Over 1000km with detours) on my roof rack in one piece. I will leave it alone for now and when I have more work done on the Kuznetsov I may make a start on it. I will learn for the three people so far constructing the class of ship. At least if you read below you will now understand why I wrote: Another big project on its way soon.

Wow it took years to see one Kirov in build now there is possibly four , all at 1:72 . what a picture it would be to get all three of these at one venue !!!!!

Dave this is going to be highly unlikely to see all 4 together. Look on a map.
1 Admiral Erwin - Queensland - Australia
2 Kirov Class Posible Peter the Great - UK somewhere
3 Kallinin or Peter the Great - Western Australia - Australia
4 Frunze - Tumut, New South Wales - Australia (Just a bare hull for now not started just yet - for a later project)
If they all come together it would be one hell of a sight you are right.
I'll be happy with my Admiral Kuznetsov and Frunze together.

You never know an Annual TF72 regatta, could see two Kirovs and One Slava escorting Kuznetsov - not a bad battle group. Something to work hard for

November 2014 in Naracoorte South OZ. Just such an event may occur! It will be big!! RIMPAC in 1/72!! USS Missouri VS Kirov, Long Beach Vs Varyag....Modern carriers from 5 navies (RN,USN, Italy,Russia and RAN) plus the usual assortment of BB's, BC's, Cruisers, destroyers etc from numerous periods.

At this moment, the hull has the stringers and cross members in and I've ordered the running gear from George Sitek. I'll start the bilge keels and stabilisers soon and get the running gear in and test her before I start the above deck work.

What motors are you looking at running Rob??

Hi Bruce, I have bought 2 Crest motors for her. From the data i have been given, they should be able to turn her 80mm 5 blade props at about 2200rpm at full power, if not I will look at changing them, in the end I want her be fast enough to suit her scale and presence, but not to look so fast that people think "their is no way the real one could move like that".

Below is her finished "Top Pair" main radar, now I just have to build everything that goes underneath it....

Those radars look superb,
hope the rest of the build goes as well.

Hi Robert You have done a magnificent job on the Top Pair radar if the rest of the ship is as good then your build will be top draw and jaw dropping.

Just to show you that I'm fair dinkum about having a Kirov Hull. Hope to get started next year sometime.





A good way to travel and at least its smaller than the Admiral Kuznetsov (Old picture But shows size).
