Hi Captain.

For the anchor outlets I used dry pastel powders applied with a fine brush on to a flat finish. Firstly, I use brown, followed by something orangey.

The paint chips are done with Maskol. Once the lighter grey has been sprayed all over the hull, I apply small, irregular blobs of Maskol around strategic areas, such as the anchor outlets where the darker grey is going to be sprayed. Once the darker grey has been sprayed on, the Maskol can be removed (ie using Blu Tac or just gently rubbing my finger over it). This reveals the lighter colour underneath that looks like paint has chipped off. Using pastels will blend it in.

Other streaks and dry brushing on the hull was done with oils. Where there is a panel line I ran a length of tape along it, and drag a dry brush down the tape on to the hull. Removing the tape reveals a clean line at the top edge of the panel, and a subtle streaking effect running down the side of the hull. I try to keep this effect subtle with a brush that is very dry with a slight touch of oil paint, as it is easily overdone. You may be able to see the effect of this in the full length pic of the port side, on the lighter grey area below the Y turret.

Hope this is understandable. I probably should take more pics of the various stages.

Regards, Dave.

It has been a while since I posted, so here is a rushed one. I have done quite a bit, but mostly the dirty work, such as scraping the seams off several bitts and life rafts, which kept giving me thumb cramp. I intended to build this sytematically, superstructure by superstructure, but have found myself jumping all over the place. The forecastle is more or less done, with the anchor chain from the kit (forgot to to photo this area; maybe later).

Here is my little flotilla 90% complete, with the need to fill in one or two seams in the brass and correcting some dodgy masking. I also used 100% artistic licence with the brass and wood finishes. Am I reasonably accurate enough with these finishes?

I have also added some oars and life buoys  and there is a small tarpaulin on the 45ft fast motor boat to hide an ugly gap I didn`t anticipate.

This pic contains my Walrus, for which it is decision time as to whether to use or not, seeing as it won`t fit in the hangar as planned. I may leave it half in, half out. It certainly isn`t my finest biplane, what with its silvered Tamiya decals and all. I should be able to correct this, though. the paintwork also requires some touching up. My Nikon micro lens really isn`t my modelling hobbies best friend.

Hopefully, I should be able to make a little more progress now that I have finished a time consuming H+S safety course recently. Thanks for looking.

Let me first say Dave that I really like your model. You are doing great work!

With regards to panel lines, I'm a little slow and have a question. Am I interpretting it correctly that you put the tape just above the line and dry brush along the underside of the tape?

Hi Rdutnell,

Yes, you have the right idea, but make sure you dry brush downwards. You can use oils, pastels or whatever medium you prefer. I notice on your Bennington WIP that you have oils for creating a rusty look. Just do it a tiny bit at a time, and build it up to the level of weathering you want. I often remove the tape to see how it is coming along, and make sure I replace it exactly back in place if more dry brushing is required. A flat, chisel edged brush is ideal for this.

I really should take more picture to illustrate what I am doing, but I never seem to to think to at the time. This is a bit of a surprise, considering photohraphy is another hobby of mine. I think there is a certain quality that results in some people producing excellent WIP blogs full of detailed info on how to etc.

Hi Dave, just loving the work your doing on the Academy ship.

I'm on and off working on the older Airfix 1/600 as I am just returning to the hobby after 5 years break. I have this kit to build also, so the 1/600 is a practice run in real sense.

One huge question though, what paint makes are you using on her? I have the proper camo patterning worked out but I need information on paint to use. The 1/600 Airfix ship was a present and the buyer bought all the Humbrol paints recommended on the box, are they good to use as a fair few of the recommended aren't usually accurate.

Thanks Dave, hope the build progresses well.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the comments. I used Humbrol enamels for the camo, but I couldn`t tell you which ones. Personally, I don`t worry too much about exact colour matches, as all the washes, powders and oils I use for weathering alter the look quite considerably. Having said that, the darker grey I used has been mentioned as being too dark, but it looks similar to Kostas`, so I am happy.

Progress has been very slow as I have been busy setting up a couple of businesses, and I have also become a little boggeed down by making my first ship a bit too complex. I should be able to update with something soon, hopefully.

Regards, Dave
