Having spent a large number of hours staring at photos of her MS12 mod (and full knowledge that my paint job is not accurate after looking at said photos). I do know how difficult this can be. Nicely done. What time frame are you building her for?

Hi Gabriel,

I have also spent a lot of time staring at photos. I think I have spent also too much time cutting out and trying to correct the mask! The time frame I want to do is April 1942. I know that my implementation is not completely correct, but that is what I could do...

I used the scheme in Roger Chesneau's book as a base and then I "modified" it according to pictures of the time. I have also used your great build as reference, if you don't mind.

Thanks for the comment!

Thank you for the compliment. You have done much more kit modifications than I have and they look great.

I have found out that her paint changed after Midway when they did some modifications to her AA arrangement and radar. That further detracted from accuracy of most paintings/drawings out there as they have a tendancy to combine photos with out looking at the dates.

Hi everyone,

I have been experimenting with the flight deck coloring. Since I have two, I painted them with 250N, one with a layer of tan underneath, which after some curing time I sanded it lightly and then repainted the tie down strips. I am still debating if I like the effect since the strips are a bit over scale.

Masking the tie down strips:

How it looks over the hull:

I also made some airplanes to see how they would look. I printed the decals for the rudders. I am still not convinced (and I used to think that 1/72 was too small)

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, my lighting and camera is less than ideal. That is something I am planning to fix.

Looking good. I agree about the lines being over scaled. But it does give a bit of an extra pop that is kind of cool at the same time.

Point of detail. Ment as help, but only if you care about such things. If not simply ignore the following. :)

I noticed you are doing some of the standard airwing for her. Are you doing the Doolittle raid? You mentioned April of '42 is when you are doing her. The reason I ask is this. The "meatball" roundels were replaced in CV-8 airwing before Doolittle. I am not 100% certain as to when off the top of my head. If it is after the raid, the white stripes on the deck were painted over with deck blue. They did show up darker though.

Hi Gabriel,

Thank you for your kind comment. Yes, I have not yet done the B-25's. It will be April 18th 1942 (Doolittle Raid), so the roundel with the red center should be there. The red center was removed from May 1942.

Here is link to a picture that illustrates the red center (well, black and white photo, but you get the idea)

About the white stripes, I thought I could "weather" them a bit, since completely bright white did not look right to me. I will work on my second flight deck and try to do something about those over scale tie down strips. I will also consider cutting one out, but then engraving it will take me more time than the actual hull work I already did. I will see what I can do.

Hi everyone,

After much consideration, I decided to scrap the first flight deck I painted. The tie down strips didn't look right and the white lines should be longer, so I painted the second one using thinner lines. The results are better in my eyes. I will also blend in the tones more but my airbrush has been acting up.

I have Tom's Modelworks Yorktown Class Detail Set PE and also WEM 1/700 USS Hornet CV-8 PE. It is interesting to see how some parts differ.

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for the kind comment!

More work on the island to come and I am also mass-producing the airplanes, I want to put some in the hangar deck. The B-25's will take me some time...

Hi everyone,

Update on the island. I painted it and added some details. The finish is not as smooth as I would like, but I just noticed after zooming in with the camera. In my airplane days (1/48) I used to polish them a to smooth them out. Here the parts are too small for that.

Masking process:

The painted parts:

It is still missing some details like the main mast and its yardarms. I am still considering with what I am going to replace the kit parts.

GREAT job, man. This looks like a far larger scale than it is.

Hi everyone,

Some progress done on the airplanes, The rudder decals where printed on white decal paper and sealed with a clear varnish.

10 TBD's

12 SBD's

11 F4F-4's (one flew away into oblivion)

This is a test shot of them in the hangar deck. I have no idea or documentation on how airplanes were arranged in the hangar deck. Still looking for that kind of information before I glue them to the deck.

Hi everyone,

New update, I think I have added all the small details to to island. Of course the rigging is still missing. I will add that at the very end.

The yardarms and masts where made with wire of different thickness. In the first picture you can see the plastic parts it replaced. The small details came from the WEM PE set for the Enterprise/Hornet. I am not entirely happy with the finish of the paints, but at a normal viewing distance it looks ok.
