Hi Aop,
Thank you for your kind words! :thanks:
I got my original plans from the Naval Historical Society, I'll try the archives but the plans for the upgrade might be too new.
Thanks again!
Cheers,
Phil

Hi Everyone,
I've been working on the superstructure and the bridge was rather tricky. But finally the lady has a bridge!
I still need to sand out all the rough edges and improve the windows, but she's finally taking shape.

Hi Froggy84
nice pictures of your model.
question: What wood you are using in the superstructure?

Hi Capito Norbert,
Thank you for your question. I am using the same sticks for the superstructure and for the hull. The Popsicle or ice-cream sticks are typically made from the wood 'white birch'. These sticks are used in ice-creams and you may often find them used as coffee stirrers. They are also sold as craft sticks for children's art work.
IMG_3379.jpg
I'm hoping to make the ship entirely out of these ice-cream sticks, but I may have some difficulty when making the railings and ladders as they easily break when very thin. But I'll give it a try and see.
Good luck with your scratch build!

Phil

Hi All,
I've completed cladding the superstructure. :woo_hoo:
The bridge deck didn't look right so I shortened it. Actually, it was a case of not thinking... Firstly I made the frame and thought it wasn't long enough and impulsively made it 10mm longer. After cladding the superstructure, I realized the bridge deck was out of proportion and measured everything again, and guess what!? It was 10mm too long! So I had to get out the hack saw and cut it back. You may notice the grey coloured outline where I shortened it. Fortunately it wasn't too difficult to fix.

Hi Aop & Aur,
You're too kind, thank you. There are some amazing popsicle and match-stick modelers out there, I hope to be as good as them one day.
I am enjoying watching your models too. I'm sure you'll do well. :thumbs_up_1:
I'd just like to show you a comparison of the rudder and propeller from my first build and this one.
I believe the only reasons I've improved are firstly hands-on experience and secondly, the inspiration I've gained from the members of this forum.
Prop and Rudder.jpg
The first one (the red one) looks kind of embarrassing to me now, but it was probably the best I could conceive at the time. Now that I've tried to learn from what the other members are doing, and pushed myself beyond what I thought I was capable of, I'm surprised how well things are turning out. The good thing with scratch building is, if it doesn't work the first time, you can always try again.
Happy modelling! :thumbs_up_1:

Hi All,
Had a bit of a break thanks to an unwanted holiday in hospital - I don't recommend it! All better now.
I started working on the forward mast but made a big mistake (note to self: don't have that second glass of wine while modelling... )
IMG_3372.jpg
Fwd Mast1.jpg
IMG_3381.JPG
Tada! Wait.... Oops! :Oops_1:
IMG_3383.JPG
After placing the mast on the ship I quickly realized there was something wrong! I double checked the measurements and discovered it was too high. The base was correct and the side angles were correct. I was about to throw it in the bin and start again - but then I realized, if only the height was wrong, I could just cut it shorter...
Rookie mistake!
IMG_3384.JPG
IMG_3391.JPG
IMG_3397.JPG
Now the height is correct, it looks much better

Phil

Hi All,
I've made new parts for the ship. Unfortunately, these weren't on the older ship plans that I have, so I had to draw them myself from photos. I don't know how accurate they will be (which bothers me)... but I couldn't find the newer plans. I don't even know what they are called... Can anyone help? One is like a gangplank...lol
IMG_3407.JPG
IMG_3521.JPG
And I've made the helo bay roller door
IMG_3518.JPG
Next will be some more filling and sanding and an undercoat...

Regards,
Phil
