Very recogniseable!
The early phases, when sometimes even more detail is being removed from a kit than added, can be though indeed. But it is of course this kind of 'preparatory' work that lays the basis for all the more fun and fancy stuff to follow. At least that's what I tell myself... :)

Since I like to do as much construction as possible before painting, I have the same loathing feeling after basecoats of paint are applied. The model then looks at it's worst to me: the details are not so visible anymore than they were before painting and don't pop out yet with washes etc., and the model just feels toy-like to me.

Very fine work you have done! The bow crest is especially spectacular! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
Great progress too; it seems you're putting in a fair amount of bench hours nowadays?

Cheers!

Marijn
I'm starting to realize this with my new project. Shredding resin for hours with no discernible change in the "look" of a vessel rather stinks. Still, solid prep work will lead to a better project, I tell myself.

Jim: Love your step-by-steps. I'm reviewing several for your brilliant work-arounds and tips. Thanks! Stellar work, as per usual.

' evening all!

still small steps- compounded by being self-employed-- 1/1 scale work has interfered with my modelmaking !

but here are a few images of recent works

The fwd superstructure had --as I gleaned from the as fitted plans of the spar deck and a few glimpse in photos...

some 'lidded' skylights --similar- but smaller than those at the stern

I made these of styrene strip, very small ladderstock and paper lids...
P1030577.jpg
The vast bland-ness of this deck is at last being mitigated as the skylights , hatches and vent stubs are added
P1030578.jpg
I have been practising make the cowl vent diagonal bracing ( of white stretched sprue )

here is number one... only another nine or so to do !
P1030581.jpg
The flimsy styrene and paper flying decks were braced on the underside with PE stainless steel strip for " strength "
P1030582.jpg
Holding and manipulating these flimsy decks and the very fine GMM gold plus ( and WEM ultrafine ) railings
-- which are cut and shut for symmetry and stanchions-on-corners,

===> was at times a challenge to both language and temper !! :Mad_5: :Mad_6: :mad_2:
P1030583.jpg
The above photo shows the ' beading ' ( actually the capping strip on the edge of the deck ) being adde of thin wire
this also absorbs and disguises the lower part of the PE hand railing.
P1030589.jpg
The roof of the wheelhouse also has the capping added of wire.
P1030590.jpg
more soon

I'm always amazed by the details you cram into a very small 1/700 ship. Great work, and an inspiration, as always.

Great stuff as usual Jim!
Bracing those decks with stainless PE strip is an excellent idea!

Hi Jim,

I realised that I rarely comment on your builds, so I thought I would this time just to affirm that like others no doubt, I am reading and enjoying your work.

Very beautiful work, I can tell it will be amazing once finished.

Any tips for the full cross diagram search on this ? I would like to make a full hull version of this kit or a Majestic in 1/700, building the lower hull I need the plans, but cannot find anything. If you have them for Hood care to share?

Thank you for your comments gentlemen!-- most encouraging fri me to continue to crack on ahead!

@ Pascale Mod
Hood and the rest of the Royal Sovereign class were in their hull shapes
virtually identical - the more extensive differences were only above the waterline!

for 1/700 purpose you could probably extrapolate from here

but do also check your PM inbox

I have sent you a message

ah yes....
I was working on the wheel house roof....

Image

and then I added the rails allowing for the stb side stairs
P1220109.jpg
The aft flying bridge had a tricky shape with a lot of cutting and shutting of rails
P1220116.jpg

I then added the deck edge beading of thin wire
P1220119.jpg
These flying bridges on the real ship were supported on numerous spindly vertical legs
Hood-1 very big.jpg
I made these by cutting the waterway off 1/350 ( bent and damaged ) WEM fine PE handrail) and trimming to desired lengths

this gave a consistent and repeatable size without looking clunky
P1220120.jpg
The legs were installed with thinned white glue( instant grab ) -and once white glue was set
then backed up with CA applied via a piece of springy cats whisker

( naturally detached from cat !! )

The diagonal braces were made using white stretched sprue
P1220121.jpg
with some paint added they looked quite pleasing
P1220133.jpg
I also added the rails to the cat-walk

note that the bottom of the rail was cut away--leaving just stanchion bases
giving rather minimalistic glueing contact surface!!

P1220131.jpg
On the foredeck the chainway was made using some old spare PE pieces adapted
P1220128.jpg

for light relief I added some hawse hole surrounds and cut to suitable shape some PE anchors

P1220129.jpg
amusingly-- on the real thing nothing must be allowed stop the clean white lines....
aft hood lighter -hms-hood3.jpg
naturally I had to do the same
P1220144.jpg

More fun (?!) soon

Hi Jim,

Astonishing work you are showing here, sheer masterclass. Especially on the nerves area, you must have nerves of titanium handling those smalle parts, especially the railings!

:Mad_6: Jeepers!

just over a month since my last update ...!
Hot weather, too much business, driving classic cars and family have conspired to limit constructive time at the workbench

nevertheless-- progress is afoot!

I was making myself unhappy about the aft pilothouse; trying to find a solution, as it had tall narrow windows and the Combrig item being rather too small in my view
as well as being solid,==|> when the port side was actually open on the real thing.
12-4383653-hms-hood-1893-94.jpg

I eventually found some suitable donor material in the form of some old Stairway PE ( unknown fret )
P1220197.jpg
this was applied on the edge of some thin styrene and the corner solids being made by gap-filling with CA
P1220192.jpg
Once installed it resembled the real thing reasonably ( for 1/700- !! :cool_2:
P1220208.jpg
I started making the masts in readiness for imminent masting
using some suitable diameter copper tubing that had stainless steel rod installed within and then filled by dribbling in runny CA glue
thereby making a rigid sandwich laminate to resist mast bending when rigging.

The heel of the mast goes all the way through in-to the the base of the hull

The fore upper top mast was supports by a V shape bracket--made of 1/350 PE handrail longitudinal material
P1220202.jpg
The lower fighting tops that had been made some time earlier, adding brass splinter-shield on drilled out resin cups

as opposed to the far too shallow resin versions

Image

Image

These were now also installed
P1030764.jpg
The upper aft mast was concentric to the lower mast
P1030766.jpg
for the upper masts I used some 1/350 Master Models of Poland sailing ship Yard arms cut in half--
these make finer masts and have a nicer progressive taper than many commercially available masts
that are usually to thick at the base relative to their length ( in my opinion! )

Moving on tangentially-- the steam pinnaces on Hood in the Mediterranean at most times,
under-way or anchored, appeared to carry large white covers
throughout her career in the Med in both colour schemes
covers 2.jpg
covers 3.jpg
covers 1.jpg
i decided to make these using white glue as its a medium I am happy with and can control the appearance and shape of.

To give a believable outline of a canvas covers spanning the high points, I made a ridge of stretched sprue
P1030744.jpg

This is the first coat of glue going on ( 4 coats were needed in the end--more of this later )
P1030750.jpg
allowing for drying times ( dull!) I started to add the stairs
P1030734.jpg
Commercially made handrails on PE stairs in 1/700 are almost always faaar to thick

so as to keep the light and flimsy look I took a different approach.

Cutting WEM ultrafine 1/700 asymmetric destroyer(?) rails down I was able to glean some suitable material
A B C illustrating the stages, single asterisk being GMM stair hand rail and double asterisk being the old ' normal ' WEM stair variant

( it all tok quite a while to do--the fail rate was very high! )
P1030739.jpg
P1030762.jpg
WARNING-- Excessively zoomed large closeup of 1/700 stairs shows my sloppy paintwork alas...

P1030742.jpg
P1030755.jpg

whilst engaged in small brass bits I decided to add to the fun using smaller still sized stretched sprue

and made the Cowl vent braces
P1030757.jpg
Before embarking on the odyssey that is making the 18 or so boats(!! ) for this ship I revisited the bow crest
and added a few more bits of paint and brass swarf

P1030768.jpg
P1030767.jpg

more soon!

Ah, copper, I missed that bit. I think it's mainly brass and aluminum for their micro range.

I wish they had 0.2mm tube (same as that I wish Evergreen/Plastruct had a range of .005"/0.13mm strips)

Ah, I missed progress on this one indeed! :)
But now it doesn't dispapoint! Everything is wonderful as always, but that is the first time I have anyone seen making separate stair hand rails to get a finer result. And the result does look absolutely great indeed, very homogenous with the railing! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Thansk you gents --from all you renowned and much respected modellers! ==> praise indeed !

marjinn wrote; ........ first time I have anyone seen making separate stair hand rails to get a finer result......

I have done this for years in 1/350 --as most commercial generic stair handrails start too low down to deck
and are --in my view--to thick

but also the last 10 or so 1/700 models of mine also had handmade stair rails

here is an image from the build thread of 1/700 HMS Majestic

these were made of thin copper wire-- this time I sought easy repeatability of pattern and thinner materiel still !
