I picked up the Anycubic Photon SLA printer. Tonight I got what I can call a successful print, don't think it's usable but that was more my fault then the printers. I need to redo the support raft as it was too heavy and didn't come clean as I would have hoped. Turns out the printer was fine, but the Resin was bad.

Using the printer is a little bit of a learning curve, I've had mine for a few months and am still learning things. Which resin are you using? Are you printing the part on a slight angle? Everything I've read says this helps prints turn out better. There's a Google spreadsheet online that owners of the photon started with a list of the resins and print settings that have produced good prints. I'll see if I can find it if you haven't already. I'm still tweaking my print settings to get the best prints I can. Check out "JoslinModels" on Facebook if you do Facebook, to check out some of the stuff I've printed.

Still plugging along, finally think I found the recipe to produce acceptable, detailed and accurate parts for the 01 deck of the Utah.
Just need to cut the deck out of scribed sheet and I will be back to actual modeling again.
Stay Tuned for more,
Matt

Spent a few days painting a filtering the deck, finally got it to where I feel it has a good wood tone.
But as I was studying my reference image, something occurred to me. We know that Tennessee and Nevada had painted decks on 12/7/41, is there anyway possible that the Utah did as well?
I dont want to start a Determining Color from a B&W image debate, but looking at the tones I feel there is both bare wood decking and some sort of coated deck. If you look at the deck between the 5/25s and the 01 deck, it looks very light vs the forecastle deck and the area around the 5/25 ammo lockers.
Thoughts?
Matt

I wouldn't think that they would have painted UTAH's deck. However, given all her weapons as a trainer and use as a "target", it is possible some areas of decks no longer had wood.

Dear Task Force,
I seem to recall that Utah had timbers lashed to her decks somewhere. None visible in this photo, though. Just curious if your other other photos show any of them(?)
This photo does reveal some interesting crossways decking on that circular gun mount. The decking is carried over onto that "bridge" which connects the circular mount to the top of the forward turret. (Another cool modeling opportunity)
BTW, those painted decks look really nice IMO.
This is a really interesting project to watch! Thanks for sharing.

Rick,
That thought had occurred to me, however when looking at wreckage photos it would seem that she still had her wood decking. Its hard to see but I believe these images show it to be there as well as looking at the deck fittings, they look much different than the image I posted. This I feel is where the decking has been removed or rotted away with age.
Chuck,
Thanks for the compliment. The timbers on her deck used during bombing practice can be seen in these images
Now, for the BIG question... does anyone (Friends in the Research Mob?) have a higher resolution scan of this image? I believe it shows the port side of the Utah and may reveal what, if any, Director was on the Port bridge wing.

Matt,
I do. That's one of my scans. And so does Tracy, Roger, etc ....

Thanks Rick, will reach out soon.
Here is a little preview of what is going into the 3D printer next...

Thank you to the kind members of this board and members of the Research Mob, I now can see without a doubt that the Utah mounted a Mk33 Director on her Port side bridge wing. It appears they modeled her director layout after the Wyoming at this time.
More to follow soon!

Matt,
Meantime, here is a closer crop view of the dated 24 September 1941, photo of USS UTAH near an OMAHA class cruiser in dry-dock I had posted somewhere before.

Thanks a Million Rick!!! I knew if I were going to come across an image of her port side, it would be one of these background images. Appreciate you posting this.

Oooooh! Nice!! So, if you can do that in 1/700 for a long stall Wyoming (AG-17) I have, I'd send you real money!

Martin,
What year Wyoming? Not gonna lie, her in that MS-12 with bare decks in 42' is mighty tempting......
The Print looks like an overall success, it's in the post curing light now so once it's done I will post some pics.

Well, I am Happy with how it turned out. Pushed the limits a little of my Printer, but that's OK as I can easily replace some missing details with styrene. Breaking them free of the supports, that will be fun but I think the end result will be worth it.
More to come soon,
Matt

Those look amazing! I wish I had the time, money, skill and printer of course to print parts like that! What an amazing advancement printers have become for our hobby! Cant wait to see her all put together!

Those look awesome. I love how the bridge windows came out.
