Some major progress tonight - she floats! Alas, it also looks like there's a hole near the bow. I'm pleased that it seems to be the only leaky spot though. I'll have a go with some fiberglass and resin to get that sorted out tomorrow

No leak by the rudder post, and no water coming in by the stuffing tubes, so the shafts are all good.

I stole someone else's idea and built a 'water box' with some 1x8 and some plastic sheeting. Worked great with only minor leakage onto the floor of the garage.

I'm also re-doing the crane (again) and am now on Version 4.

I'm shifting the base to a different support, and will use a 2mm pin to hold it in place.

I've also picked up a super micro servo that's about 5mm x 22mm, which actually FITS INSIDE the crane body - so I'm going to be re-printing the body tonight with a space inside for the servo. I'm going to modify the servo for continuous rotation, and use it to hoist and lower the hook.

Plan is to have the crane go onto a pin that will protrude through the flight deck, with the rotation servo located below the deck. The control wire for the internal servo will run through the base. I'll see how it all fits in the morning.

Ah! What every Canadian or Alaskan would want under their Christmas Tree, A John Deer tractor with snow blower! The Water box is a clever contraption! Glad she floats OK. At least with a larger model one has greater leeway for CG considerations. There is a thread with a guy doing a RC 1:350 DE and he has had to go through with a rotary tool and thin everything from the backside to reduce top weight! Quite a project.

So, Maiden sail today in a friend's swimming pool.

Good news - she floats, and the ballasting I did worked pretty good.

Bad news - she leaks. There was a small leak near the bow that I fixed after the float test in my garage, now it looks like there's more work to do near the shaft lines. That's a tomorrow job after things dry out a bit.

Other progress - the 1.9 gram servo I got was just TOO small - I could not convert it to continuous rotation. So I've gone up to a 5g servo instead, and I'm re-printing the crane body again tonight to fit it. I am also re-printing the crane truck. Version 1 was a bit - off. The crane cab was too big, and there were a couple of other minor fixes I've added to my new version of it.

I'm also printing some watertight doors. Here's the design - a mixture of porthole, non-porthole, and non-porthole dogged (as opposed to handwheel) doors to choose from. 3 of them printed in about 8 minutes. I've got about 20 of them printing now, I expect that to take about an hour.

So, the Crane truck wasn't quite right...so I redid it...and then re-did it again and V3 is on the printer now.

I also printed some flight deck tractors, but they didn't turn out well - I did the 3D model large, and then scaled it in the slicing program (Cura) and saw there were a couple of minor 'spots' that didn't look right.

Lesson learned, if it doesn't look right, it's not right. So, I made the seat and steering wheel into a part of the model, and split the tires off and will glue them on afterwards.

I also added a fuel cap, some handles, and some curves to the upper panels that will hopefully make things look a bit nicer/smoother.

Some minor progress after a few days break for Christmas with family.

I've got V3 of the crane truck printed and ready to tidy up, paint, and assemble.

I also have some of the MD3 flight deck tractors printed - version 2 - this time with separate wheels. I think they'll glue up nicely.

A new smaller Radar printed - about the right size.

I also found a model of the Titanic's Lifeboats on thingiverse, and decided that it's 'close enough' to a 27' whaler, so I adjusted size/scale and hit print. Looks OK as well.

Well, the hull patching is basically complete. I've got a layer of cloth and glass laid on pretty much all of the inside of the keel.

Here you can see where it was dripping out - this is where I had a leak.

And a quick update on the Banshees - with the goal of it being a functional model, this is OK.

Decals next!

Spent some time doing details today.

The lockers I printed yesterday are now partially primed.

The flight deck tractors have been assembled and given a first layer of paint.

The flight deck crane truck has been given a first layer of paint.

The flight deck crane has had a bit of work done too.

Interesting how one comment can make me ponder revisiting these (I have 8 of them printed) and makes me want to re-do the 3D model and reprint them...

Here's the fire lockers (and other upper deck lockers) painted and ready to install.

I put some of the details on the ship just for curiousity...a week or two of work, and it really doesn't look like much!

After a bit of work (interestingly, this will take 36 minutes to print, and I'm probably 3 hours deep in designing it...) here are the crash barrier supports.

Spent some time today trying to print a model of a boarding ladder that I found on Thingiverse....it didn't go so well.

So, I spent some time in DSM and came up with this, which is V1 of my Boarding ladder.

I'll put it on the printer overnight and see how it looks in the morning.

I've also done a bit more painting - my hose stations are about done!

Some minor progress to report.

I've had to strip the deck again and repaint. The paint was bubbling.

Problem was that I had several different types of paint - supply chain issues meant that the colours I wanted were not available from the same brand of paint, so I was putting different brands of paint over top of each other.

Long story long, I took it down to bare wood again, and slowly built up the layers again. 2 coats of hunter green with light sanding between. Then 4 layers of clear gloss with light sanding between coats to smooth things up a bit. Today, I taped it up and laid down a very light coat of grey for the angled deck portion.

I'm letting things dry for 2-5 days between coats as well.
