I guess an update every 6 months isn't overkill. The project is now approx.19 months old. I am rapidly approaching a real time build for an actual Fubuki Type DD. Am now working on the Type I hull (Shirayuki) and hope to be in a postion to paint the remaining 3 by the end of this month.

Pictured are the bridges for the Type I Shirayuki early 1943, Type II Ayanami 1942, and Type II Ushio 1944. I have some individual closeups as well, if anyone really wants me to post them.

On a related note, having accumulated an incredible amount of info on this class, and as it pertains to the 1/700 PitRoad and Tamiya kits, I think that I will begin a specific CASF thread on the Fubukis. Also, I have revised my opinion of the Tamiya mold as it is applicable & somewhat OK for Type I's (only). I can go into that on the thread as well.

Thx, Bob. I'll try to start a thread in the next few days. Here are a few bridge closeups. I still need to do some touch ups, it seems, on some of those soldered seams. Digital photography is a two edged sword

Funny you posted these photos, I just posted an announcement about MosquitoCON and was going to e-mail you to see if you were going to have anything ready for the show.

So, here I am, 2+ years on. Finally, I'm ready to apply the paint for the linoleum decks, then attach main railings, tape the decks, and apply the grey. Then final details. This project has gone on so long that my photography skills have eroded along with my modeling skills. Should have set it to manual. Sorrry for the lack of clarity but I don't have the patience (or time) to reshoot.

Anyway, here are some group shots of Shirayuki 1943, Ayanami 1942, and Ushio 1944. I'll post individual ship shots shortly. (Edited to improve contrast after initial post)

Even without painting, they look great and on scale

Thx, Gilbert. I actually had time to paint the linoleum on all 3 ships this weekend. Amazing.

Here are some pics of the Type I, Shirayuki. As I mention in the CASF Fubuki thread, PitRoad doesn't provide proper funnels for this version so, you have to improvise. I used Tamiya Type I funnels, sanded to make the halves thinner and to meet the base. The turrets are from the original PitRoad #38/E-02 Cruiser-DD set.

I'm pleased with the way it turned out, for once.

Well Dan, you can be pleased as she really looks great . Masts, in particular look really on scale. I noticed you used some styrene rod for the degaussing cable. Don't like Lion Roar PE one ?

And what did you use to fill the cable reels ?

I do believe that LionRoar issues some PE degaussing cable in 1/700 but, for me, it's overkill. You would never see the bracketing in 1/700. Of course I realize that digital photography has had quite an impact on the degree of detail to be visualized in this scale but, it's still my opinion that much of it is overdone. Just my take on it.

I used fine copper wire stripped from an audio cord to wrap around the reels.

Now for some shots of Ayanami 1942. The depth charge rack fell over during photography - fortunately, everything was set on safe. It would have been a shame to lose the ship after so much work.

The level of details is so extensive, that the kit looks more a 1/350 than a 1/700

I'll just post these last ones of Ushio and hold off until some of the painting has been completed. The poses are getting a little repetitive. Ushio's funnels are shorter, and the intakes at the base different, than Ayanami. Ushio has a completely scratchbuilt late war foremast. I've never gone all out before on that particular detail. Took a while to work out but I've got a good handle on it for the next time.

Beautiful once again Dan. What size styrene did you use for the degauss cable? I'm like you and think the bracketing on PE degauss is overscale in 1:700. I've been using just 32g wire for mine but would like to know what you did, especially on the curved parts of the cable.

I used .01" square rod evergreen strip. That scales out to 7" diameter, which is probably a hair too narrow and high. The degauss cable should be rectangular in cross section but the next size, .01 x .02" is gonna be too big; more appropriate for a larger ship. The plastic strip conforms easily to the curves of hull when used with Tamiya extra thin liquid glue. It's not a continuous strip; one for the the forecastle and another for the main deck level, plus the cuts for around the stern.

I'm glad someone agrees about these overscale effects. Based on all the photos I have, I think one would have to be within less than a ship's length (DD) of the hull to actually see any brackets. My two cents worth.
