xo-llent work Kelly! Just wondering I'm building the BigE when she was brand new. will the effect that you have on the Truman work on the time period of BigE?

ditto the above. You have managed to make large areas of haze gray look interesting. An acheivenment in itself. If i finally lay the keel of my Truman i would like to try somthing similiar. I may even try preshading too

I agree with NukeMM, although the camera may not tell the truth, this doesn't look over done to me either. Keep up the great work, I'm really enjoying this topic!NukeMM wrote:Kelly stated..................Overall I like that you can make out the hull sections, but maybe I overdid it?
My two cents worth..................Right now the weathering and hull sections are most of what there is to look at on the model. Once that everthing else progresses, you may not feel that they were "over done".
I like it, myself, and am anxious for additional updates as the it progresses.

Re: 1/350 USS Truman
I think at the very least you could do the penciling in of the lines like I did. Even brand spanking new you can see the hull sections. Maybe just don't weather it as much as I did and I'll bet it will look fine.gtb -red wrote:xo-llent work Kelly! Re: 1/350 USS Truman
The stern is almost finished. Still have a few small details and some sailors to add:

I'm going to scratchbuild an engine and test stand as well:

I won't add the boat docking station until the end, cause I know I'd end up smashing it beyond recognition!

This is a lot of fun to watch. Kelly, quick question. What type of tool/ruler did you use to draw your lines with the drafting pencil?

Re: 1/350 USS Truman
I just eyeballed the dimensions (you'll find that I do that alot) of the hull sections and then used the appropriate width of Tamiya masking tape as a guide. The tape was easy to follow with a very sharp drafting pencil, and the occasional mistake was easy to clean up.Jon wrote: What type of tool/ruler did you use to draw your lines with the drafting pencil?

Excellent, that is what I would have guessed, just didn't want to assume.Kelly Quirk wrote:I just eyeballed the dimensions (you'll find that I do that alot) of the hull sections and then used the appropriate width of Tamiya masking tape as a guide. Re: 1/350 USS Truman
Okay, I spent WAY too much time on these, but I'm happy with the result. I was originally just going to use the MK-29 Sea Sparrow launchers from the Tamiya Enterprise kit, but then realized how grossly out of scale and inaccurate they were. I then tried converting the ones form the Nimitz kit, with very frustrating results. I went back to the Tamiya ones, stripped them of detail and cut them down in size, and here is the result:

Here's one compared to the original part for comparison:

The 'windows' are merely manholes to allow access to the removable waterline security lamps...maccrage wrote:Yep. They are ladderwells from the catwalks to the 03 level.Tim Barron wrote:I assume you have the photos like this from carrierbuilders.net?

I think you are right? They look like stairwells with some kind of window?
...and please note that there are no 'stairs' on US Naval Ships. Only 'ladders' (and, by extension, 'ladderwells'...)
Looks fantastic, by the way.

Re: 1/350 USS Truman
I've done some preliminary work on the hangar deck, still a long way to go! I can't even approach the talent and skill that Cyrus Tan has, but I think it'll be respectable all said and done (I hope). I've closed off the port side elevator door, so I only need to concentrate on one side of the hanagr deck.
