Mark,

Ahhh, yes the distinctive hull I remember seeing from shore! I see the Edison still had the hedgehog launchers! I would have thought they'd remove them when she was frammed. Through my detail that ended in '72, Mullinnix had the hedgehog launchers too, but she was left as a gunship. What was the use of the structure on the 01 level just aft of the forward stack? Mullinnix had an open 01 level at that location with only the torpedo tubes mounted on the deck.

Sea story: our hedgehog magazine leaked JP5 from a fuel tank nearby. On occasion, we'd "bail out" the magazine with buckets!

P:

When the Edson went into the yards in 71/72, we had the old style bridge, with both 3" guns. In the yards, they put in the 02 and 03 level admidships which housed the fire control and other Electronics shops. The top of the 03 level was painted with our hull number 946 and was called the 946 deck, its where the CO let us sun bathe, when we were overseas, LOL! We also got the hurricane bow in the yards and they removed the forward 3" gun but left the hedghogs, go figure! We also go the new enclosed bridge at that time, god what an improvement in stormy weather.
I came to the Edson from coastal minesweepers MSC's and PBR's so to me the Edson was a huge ship but god was she good looking. She was a good ride and boy could we could sure put out the lead on the gun line, though onloading ammo ever 2-3 days was a pain in the butt.
If you got any other questions, just ask.

Keep the faith,

Mark

Hello All:

Gtbred, thats a sweet looking hull. What scale, who is the manufacture and who is ISW. These are all new to me but look great.
Here are a few pictures of my DD946 she is in 1/96th scale, she is coming along..... oh so slowly. Two of the pictures show the bildge keel I had a friend machine out of Delron plastic, very thin but very strong.
Maybe with winter coming on I can get some more time on her....oh well one can hope.

Take care all and keep the faith

For the Record:
One of the saddest sights I ever saw was THE Forest Sherman sitting cold, with paint flaking, in the Philadelphia reserve basin.

Yes, I saw that too about 1985 and I felt the same way. There were several FS hulls there, including Mullinnix.

Come on out to Bremerton, WA and get happy. The Turner Joy is very well cared for and you can tour both inside and out. :woo_hoo:

And what part of Kitsap County do you live in???? Obviously, not any of the parts I regualrly travel in. You should come over to the NOPMS meeting in Pt. Hadlock. For information go to our website nopms.net.

Earlier in this string the question was asked about the availabiltiy of a reasonable set of plans for the hull of the FS class; did anyone locate some, or does any one know where they can be had?

I'm contemplating a project to build a model of the Turner Joy in 1/144 scale and I'm going to need a reasonable set of plans for the hull. I've got what Floating Drydock offers and can adjust the superstructure to the TJ but that hull is a different thing all together.

Any leads gladly accepted,

Bruce
