Fujimi vs. Italeri Kitty Hawk Kits

Post by Elvis965 »

I was asked to build a Kitty Hawk for someone who served on board her during the late 60's, and I was wondering which kit was better, Fujimi 1/700 or Italeri 1/720.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks

I actually wanted to know about the Fujimi kit as well. Based on the review I read about it, it is a rough kit, but supposedly looks good when finished. Anyone have anything on this kit?

Hiya all, The Fujimi kits are a 100% better representation of the Kitty/Connie than the Italeri/Testors, A lot of work is required to bring them up to a good standard, on the Plus side, Island/Flightdeck and Sponsons are all generally correct, on the minus side, no liferafts are provided and Weapons need to be replaced, more aircraft are required.

Shop around, price of these models has been reduced to good levels as of late

Hope this helps

Happy Modeling

I also think that the Fujimi kit is much better than the italeri kits. The extra money for the 1/700 kit is worth it! I planned on building the Fujimi Kittyhawk depicting the early 60s and it looks pretty acurate. My Italeri Kittyhawk is late 90s and I used the extra sponsons and the various Antena parts from the Fujimi kit to finnish it out.

It's too bad there are no 1/350 (0r good 1/700) kits of any of these vessels. I know I would buy one if there was. Trumpy to the rescue? At least in 1/700?

Anybody here serve on a Forrestal or Kitty hawk class?
I did deployments on both the "Connie" and "Indy".

We just missed each other on Conny. I was on her in 1990 with CVW-9 to take her around the horn to Norfolk for a refit. It was a pretty good trip as deployments go and Conny was a pretty good ship considering that she was going into the yards!

Red - my Forrestal was on hold while I finished Nimitz, but I've now brought her back from the garage. Now I need to get some propane to heat the garage so I can paint during the cold. I have the planes and everything I need to finish (except airwing decals from Starfighter). As for America, I picked up the Italeri kit which doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. That will probably be done in the spring after Enterprise is done. So in the next week or two I should have some real in progress pics of Forrestal.

There is another kit I need to build, I have the first Revell USS Forrestal kit, in fact I have them all from the 1960s. But before I can get back in my hobby room I need to get a 35 foot lighthouse out of my shop I'm building first. Freedom Point Memorial Lighthouse. Got a 26 foot lighthouse in the yard now. Eternal Sea Point Memorial Lighthouse. Built for all shipmates lost at sea. Some ship kits I built at sea or in one of three showcase. To many irons in the fire. "Boats"..

1/700 America CVA-66

Post by Mark McKinnis »

This is a 1/700 Fujimi Kittyhawk that I converted into a 1/700 America. The correct island and sponsons were liberated from a 1/720 Italeri America. I had to remove the bulges under the elevators from the Italeri kit with a dremel tool and grind them down thin to place on top of the Fujimi kit. I also took the Bow Mounted Anchor from the Italeri Kit. She will be mated with CVW-9 1996 time frame.

Nice build Mark :thumbs_up_1: , is a 1996 CVW-9 onboard her something that you just like the idea of ?. Have you made the CVW-9 decals yourself ?

I am looking forward to seeing her with a full deck of aircraft.

Happy modeling

Whoops! I meant 1969 CVW-9. That aixelxid is getting really bad!! I guess it would actually be more acurate to say 69-71 time frame.
