A trip to the lhs did not provide the Akula class, however I did pick up a Kursk. I'm going with the original idea, of the sub emerging from the ice. I picked up a shadowbox and rearranged it to work appropriately.

Surcouf after the first weekend.
The kit is really primitive, it came in a zip lock bag which Hans provided and consists of a hull and a thick layer of resin on which the kit parts are cast. Hull and superstructure seem to confirm reasonably to the drawings of the "service historique". The aircraft 27mm guns look beautiful , I have my doubts about the rest of the small parts.
After cleaning up and priming I've started to paint the hull. The kit seems to be based on her early 1930' configuration so I have painted her accordingly. Still looking for good references for the boot topping.

Good start Pieter!

Yes the HP sub kits are very plain indeed. My RNN O Class is in the same category!

Finished the painting of the hull and have added a wash of burnt umber plus used oils to bring out the deck.
Next job is to locate her onto a sea base so that i can get on with the smaller items.

Roy -
Love the wash and the distinctive but blended coloration. Well done. Any thought to sanding down (not off) the I-16 designation to lower/lessen the relief? That's looking a bit overscale - but maybe given the weathering, you don't want to go back to that.
What did you do (what tools did you use) to get the consistent curve to the alloy diving plane guards on the bow? Can you share what thickness/dimensions the material is?
Any plans for rigging?

Ok, dimension of tube is 0.03 i think, used the last i had for this will restock this weekend at the Scale model world show, Telford.
Yes totally agree that the i16 pennant No is not good when seen using a macro setting on the camera, i will have to reduce it's over scale appearance asap but would rather do that once she is fixed to her sea base which i will do tonight.
Rigging, well if time allows i will attempt to put loop arials on to her but my main concern is going to be adding stretched sprue to the diving plane guards. On the same issue, the guards were shaped using the handle of my snips which are slightly oval, takes a bit of time getting both sides identical but well worth the extra effort. The aft-end guardes were shaped with a smooth nosed plier.
Thanks for your comments and questions,
Roy

Enjoy Telford! On my modeling bucket list, due to all the references and cameraderie exhibited here for the show.

Managed to do the water last night, it is made using a standard light weight domestic wall filler and is approx about 2-3mm thick.
Leave to dry over night in a warm room then it's ready to paint.
Painted the water this morning using Valejo acrylics from the model colour range and minature paints which is a game workshop type of paint again acrylic.
Please ignore the large mast, i leave it like this as it stops me from handling the hull when painting, it will be cut down to the correct size shortly.

Inasmuch as the Typhoon class submarines are the largest among submarines it is interesting to compare them with other congeners.
That's the way the completed hull looks like compared to the UB-1...
and few other 1/350 submarines.

This is the 1/700 HP Models RNN O-24. Hull primed with Mr Surfacer and conning tower added. Conning tower- I added fine wire and drilled out details. I tried to simulate the midship torpedo tubes but they did not come out to my liking. I fixed this by adding scrap photoetch torpedo door covers hiding the boo boos. Next step will be to add torpedo net bow cutter, dive planes, dive plane guards, and anchors.

Can you say more about your painting on the Typhoon to date - are you pre-shading with white as the counter-color?

I realize I'm late to the game, but I'm entering the group build with the Skywave 1/700 RO-35 kit. Hopefully I'll have it done by the deadline!

Hi Bob -
I have a Ro-35 in my stash and was thinking about doing it as well. Looks like it should go together pretty quickly.
Do you have any detail photos of the type? Not finding much on my side.

I have the Osprey book on IJN subs and a book on the IJ Navy at the end of WW2 that has a lot of good info in it. I also have a set of Japanese language books that have most of the sub classes in them. There were a number of that class, so it shouldn't be too hard to come up with some photos or drawings. If you want me to check it out for you let me know.

Scott & Bob:
I'll see what I can come up with for you too! If I can recall alot of this class was in the overall Black scheme during the Guadalcanal campaign.
