Perhaps enlarging the time frame is the best solution... How about extending the group build until June?

I have no problem extending it to july or august if it would mean more participants!

Re: Russian night group build! Jan 13 - August 3
I am starting my build tomorrow.
I will be building the Trumpeter Sovremmeny DDG (http://www.trumpeter-china.com/a/en/pro ... /1675.html) using WEM resing gun turrets (https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/c/1200+Scale/37/1/) and the WEM photoetch set (https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/p/WEM ... 2001/5139/)...
I WILL not try to correct the numerous mistakes of the kit but I will do my best in building and painting it. So a minus for accuracy, but I hope I a plus for the result...
Come on the rest of you gentlemen... We have a group build going on....

Erm, I finished the Hobby Boss 1/700 Typhoon over the past three days, if that counts...

Re: Russian night group build! Jan 13 - August 3
Here's my entry.
I'll be trying to correct the mistakes in the kit to make it more accurate. I hope to have these other two both ready along with the Typhoon so that I can make things easier and paint them all at the same time. Ideally, Hobby Boss will have their Yasen class out in a good time frame so that I can do all 4 together.

But enough about those, on to the Typhoon. I've decided to start with the conning tower. I've taken a drawing of the tower and resized it to 1/350 scale with an assumption of overall ship length of 172m. On top of that, I've traced the outline of the model in red. As you can see, it's way off. So, the first thing I did was to cut the two sections apart.

After that, I glued the lower halves together, and then the upper halves together along with the roof. When they were dry, I then cut each of them in half. The rear of the upper piece and the front of the lower piece are each filled with putty so that I can do some reshaping later and hopefully not end up with giant holes.

That's it for now. I hope this whole project doesn't just end up in the garbage can.

Here's another small update.
TinyPic seems to be having some problems. Oh well. I've rounded off the nose of the conning tower and added plastic strips to hold the sections in a position more close to that of the drawing. Now I get to start filling all of it in. This will take a while.

It seems like everyone is hibernating! My Steregushchy and Varyag arrived today. Deciding on which one to use for the build. I"m thinking Steregushchy as the main display cruising with Sovremenny should make a nice piece.

That sounds like it will be a nice looking display. I'm curious to see how the two match up in size. I almost got one myself, but decided not to at the last minute. I'll wait for the plastic Yasen class instead of the extra work needed for the resin build.

I'll tell you, the Steregushchy has got to be one of the top 5 kits I've ever had. It's easily equivalent to some of the later Combrig, Niko or NNT releases in terms of casting quality. Were it not for the resin wafers you'd think it were injection molded. I hope to get a crack on it as soon as I lay down some paint on my Averoff over in the cruiser build section, I can't have 3 ships on my workstation at once! (Ryurik, Averoff, now Steregushchy!?!?) Madness!

Re: Russian night group build! Jan 13 - August 3
Some progress has been made. Major components assembled and painted. The fit is horrible, the size and shape of particular items is wrong and some doors, hatches and windows should not exist, while some others should. I have decided to build this oob without wasting the WEM set for this (I own two more kits so I will correct the next one). I will be using the pe provided with the kit and the radar form the wem set, since it provides two sets of radars.
Colours used are humbrol sea grey no. 27, humbrol no. 100 for the decks, tamiya gun metal sprey for the main deck and humbrol no. 73 for the hull red.

I have decided to either build Otlichnyy - ???????? - Excellent 434 in 1988 or Bezuprechnyy - ??????????? - Impeccable 430 in 1986.

Today's progress included the main deck fittings:

I am starting to gain pace in this build...
Dan I am very interested in your build, I would like to correct my Typhoon too...

Re: Russian night group build! Jan 13 - August 3
looking good everybody!
I'm hoping to get started on the Kirov soon, but reference has been somewhat difficult to find. Also, the Combrig kit, which is great in many regards, has absolutely no detail on the superstructure sides, so portholes and doors have to be drilled and dug up out of spares. C'est la vie!
Keep up the good work guys!

Looking great. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I had to look what scale your ship was. At first i thought it was a 700 scale. Either way really neat and tidy on the paint work.

Thank you very much... I have to admit that Trumpeter has designed this aspect of the kit really nice. All the parts that fit on the decks and are of different colour are molded separately. So all you have to do is paint them before assembly. But this increases the build time, since there are litteral hundreds of parts to trim, shape and paint. And their injection marks are always in the worng spot...

Re: Russian night group build! Jan 13 - August 3
Aft superstructure completed. I decided to blacken the pyramid mast using my airbrush, because in most pictures I noticed it was paitned grey and then it blackened by the smoke from the chimney.

Tomorrow I will start painting the windows, stuff that are different colors. I also noticed that the kit doesnot include anchor chains and there are also no holes for them at the forecastle...

Nick, such progress you are making - you are illustrating a very tempting build. I appeciate you relaying your paint brand/color choices; the use of gunmetal gray for the deck is very intriguing to me and looks great in the photos.

Nick,
Your "Excellent" is looking great. You seem to be building at an incredible speed. I love your choice of colors. I was going to ask if much masking was involved or if the kit had a good breakdown of parts but, I see you already answered that. Your waterline is really straight. Did you paint it or use a decal?
*****
Progress on my typhoon, TK-17 Archangel (an appropriate name for something meant to rain destruction down from the sky and smite entire cities), is slow. The gaps were so big that instead of regular putty, I decided to use epoxy putty(probably should have used bondo) which is making sanding harder than planned. In the process, some areas have gotten over sanded and regular putty will still have to be added later. I'm still not quite sure how, or even if, I'm going to add and correct some of the details on the tower.

As a side note...
I wasn't expecting a few sub models to be such a chore. I see that I have to go back and rework parts of my Akula Gepard as well. I thought it was all ready for paint but it's not.

Thank you very much... The build is tempting only because I am not correcting the inaccuracies of the kit.D-Boy wrote:Nick, such progress you are making - you are illustrating a very tempting build. Dan, Merphy's law does include model building. The possibility of a build turning into a real pain in the a... is equivalent to the hopes and optimism for an easy and quick build by the modeller...California Bound wrote:Nick,

The waterline is painted. I started masking at the stern and went on to the bow. The only masking involved was that of the decks when painting the superstructure. Really easy and quick... One of the finest aspects of this kit...
My building speed is owed to my work leave for the past week....
More progress after the painting of the tiny bits and pieces..

I decided to make the anchor chains first and so I did. I also filled and sanded the sides, where the aft superstructure meets with the main deck and took some photos of the turrets provided in the kit as a comparison to the resin turrets by white ensign:
