But the way it usually works is:

Step 1 - Make Accurate Hull
Step 2 - Create mold for Hull
Step 3 - Reproduce Hull
Step 4 - Sell
Step 5 - Not Worth the time it takes
Step 6 - Loose interest in modeling because it isn't fun anymore

Been there, done that, have the T-shirt.

Pretty much goes for contests and magazine articles as well - at least in my opinion. Burned me out for awhile. I like working at my own pace, on what I want, when I want and too my own standards - which has evolved over time and probably doesn't make much sense to anyone but me. That's what is great about the net and the HOBBY (if you keep it a hobby). No editor, no deadline, no judges...put it out there and if no one is interested...well no big deal. Futhermore, what is really rewarding about scratchbuilding (and if you don't do it, you really don't understand) is that you get a very real sense of the subtle contours and shapes of the subject - sort of a Monet approach to modeling. The subtleties of shape and proportion really begin to take center stage. Things begin to make sense, almost as though you get into the head of the designer. Hard to put into words, but those who know, know what I mean. So I try and cheerlead for more scratchbuilding. There is lot to be gained by doing it yourself. Enough - I'm off my soapbox

Absolutely LOVE fixed Enterprise hull ver 2.0!!!

I know it was a lot of time and effort...but don't you now feel GOOD? Better than BWN,better than Trumpeter, all with just home tools and drawings (I guess BWN and Trumpeter forgot about drawings).

You are absolutely right about having the hull be more correct. But I have you to thank for the inspiration. It isn't until you actually work with the lines and see it develop, that you begin to appreciate how graceful these hulls were.
So thank you for the guidance of your previous effort. I hope the results will be up to your standards.

Doesn't get much better than this. Beautiful spring day out in the shop, a block of wood, a couple of large bastard files and a stout. Got the hull pretty much roughed out.

First coat of primer. I think it looks pretty good. A little refinement here and there becuase it is hard to visualize while just in wood.

It is one thing to read in a review or comment that a kit's hull is inaccurate, but to see a side-by-side, in scale, comparison is like a slap in the face. You have to think that the kit manufacturer was going for a generic aircraft carrier, rather than a specific ship class. It's really astounding. One the one hand it is laughable but on the other very annoying, to put it mildly.

I can't help but wonder how the various other assemblies in the build would compare in a side-by-side matchup.

Mind, i think Trumpeter were following the BWN hull or something. Nothing like double checking though
