1/350 CVN-65 USS Enterprise 2001

All that detail is AWESOME!!!!

I hope you are building an Enterprise with the flightdeck ripped open by bombs, otherwise most of your beautiful work is never going to see the light of day, and that would be sad. Or just display flightdeck separate from the hull... Then you could save time on building the lighting. Do you need any more "great" advice on how to display this masterpiece? All this neat craftsmanship is making me say crazy things. Keep it up!!!!

Thanks Jim and Laci. Most of the detail that I have been adding should be able to be viewed through the hangar openings. Most of the wall sections shown previously are for the port side of the ship and 3 of the hangar openings are on the starboard so most all of that will be visible even when closed up. There will be mainly one section of wall that really won't be seen and that is the hangar wall section on the starboard side between elevators 1 and 2. This is where the main CONFLAG station is that leads out to the quarterdeck where replenishments and refueling takes place. I will probably still detail this area......knowing me. My plan is to put together a photo album of the build once its completed to show all of my work that may or may not be seen once it's done.

Anyway, I just have a quick update tonight. I have been working on detailing the aft starboard hangar wall section. Besides the photo that is in "The USS Enterprise - in detail & scale" book, which is outdated for the era I am building in, I only had one other photo that showed some detail in this area and I believe it be after her decommissioning. Which means, there may have been some dismantling of structures that may have been there otherwise........not quite sure, plus the photo wasn't all that high quality so zooming in to check detail got a little fuzzy. Anyway, the following photos of my wall section is what I came up with by way of the two photos. It is amazing that with all of the photos I have been collecting that I realize, this is one area of the ship where not a lot of photos seemed to have been taken.

Here is another update on the hangar deck.......I am close to being done with the forward hangar section.......well construction wise anyways. This was quite a complex structure to build. Also building it all as one insert proved a bit of a challenge but it turned out ok. Here are some shots of what I came up with.

I took a couple more photos to share that show the forward hangar structure in place (not glued) with a few of the other wall panels on the port side of the hangar. I have two other wall sections to finish, plus the hangar ceiling and I will be ready to paint and decal the hangar.

Doug, can you please take some photos of the hangar in its entirety before you paint it? It would be a phenomenal resource for anyone wanting to detail Big E's hangar or a hangar in general. I'm taking copious notes as you build. Top notch work, keep it up

The floor has been glued into place already. I made sure all of my work was completed below the hangar floor before I secured it to the hull of the ship. This included the mounts for the screws to attach it to the base, as well as making sure I had somewhere to run the electrical wire once it was installed. Once the floor was secured, that is when I drew the hangar floor layout onto the card stock. The wall supports are glued to the hangar floor as well. These make it easy to check fit and give the wall inserts support. You just have to make sure that your wall supports are glued at 90 degrees so the walls are straight once glued into place.

Finished construction on the main conflag station hangar wall between elevators 1 and 2. Once the hangar is closed up, this will be one of the more difficult areas to see, if at all. But I still detailed it all the same!!! One more wall section to go.......

Really superb craftsmanship! This monster section of this ship is probably the hardest and most time consuming part of the model to make. All that long hours is really starting to pay off. This section I'm also delaying due to the dedication and time that will be going into that. Never completely satisfied with what i make and 60% of the time i find myself destroying it and re doing portions of my ship. Your work always seems effortless and I know its serious hard work, lots of frustration and probably a lot of swearing that goes with that. My problem most of the times is material to build with since our hobby shop only stock very limited stuff and you end up spending most of your time trying to find the right "size" that seems ok for the scale. From my side, thank you for putting in all the effort making this enterprise believable. Well done!

Dude... AWESOME!

While I agree with all of the above compliments, there are a few things that I find most impressive coming from a fellow carrier nut:

1- just how friggin clean every aspect is! No rough cuts, or areas that you seem to have said "that's good enough", everything fits beautifully together.

2- the attention to detail and craftsmanship. Even detialing those starboard bulkheads between the elevators even though it will never be seen again once the hangar is closed up. You have obviously been drinking the same kool-aid as me, maybe even taken a bigger helping, cause I skipped out on the areas that can't be seen.

3- and this is the biggest kudos from me, is the overhead cielings. You detailed the crap out of those, and did not take the easy route of just sorta doing a "representative" build of some of the clutter that is up there (as I admit I did in some areas up top). That detail is awesome, and while it will likely be overlooked by most who check out this model when it is done, it is a detial that will really pop and stand out to your peers who are also carrier nuts.

Great job man, really.

to produce details parts for a hangay bay, *that* would be the template to follow.

Hey Doug, when you take your Enterprise to model shows, you should also get hold of one of those cameras that has the small, flexible tunneling lens and hook it up to a small television. That way everyone can enjoy the sheer effort you've put into detailing the hangar deck!
