Hi Guys ,
hereby pictures I took yesterday while modifying the wheelhouse deck and some pictures of the whole model I took today .
I've first put a piece of thick card as a ground for the new planking to come :

I've then glued on the older deck a new piece of brown paper :

commencing to draw the planking ( or better said : the caulking ):

caulking done :

the next step here is to put some dope on the paper , to waterproof it .
Pictures of the whole model :

I did an attempt to highten the railing of the "monkey bridge" , but I didn't succeed , I'll have to rip everything off and make some new railing , that later will be covered with canvas

Regards ,
Laurent

Very nice work! The shrouds + ratlines look great - I'd never have thought of soldering them up from brass rod, but this must make them much more resistant to damage on a working R/C model. And the overall model is looking very good now.
You might be interested to see these photos I took of "HMS President" (ex-HMS Saxifrage) on the Thames in London a couple of weeks ago. This was a WW1 "Flower" similar though not identical to Zinnia. It certainly looks a lot different now, but you can still see the shape of the original ship.

Hi EPinniger ,
I knew about HMS President , she is so far the only WW1 sloop that has been preserved .
She was a part of the Anchusa class , and as you say , she is similar to Zinnia , but the hull form is different , I have no idea if the engine room specifications were the same either , but I guess it was .
About the ratlines , I thought this was the better way to get them right , I did some trials with sewing thread on an earlier project , I even did try nylon fishing lines but it didn't work out ...
Regards ,
Laurent

Hi Guys ,
my work for this afternoon
I built up the signal boom and put it into place on the front mast , I also began with the soldering of the railing on the wheelhouse deck :

the railing is still twisted & bent for now , I have to adjust the stanchions length , the whole will then be covered with paper to reproduce canvas ...

Laurent

Hi Jimmy ,
thanks for the link !
I thought to use tissue paper , but that vegetal dough paste looks like a good system .
I should check in my freezer , I think I still have some rice paste , very thin and translucid like the stuff the portuguese armor guy used ...
Reminds me my CIC loves asian food , should make some springrolls for her
I also have some translucid drawing paper at home , will take a look at it either ...
By the way , I have no difficult shapes to render here , just plain canvas wrapped around railing , that's it ...
Regards ,
Laurent

Hallo Peter ,
just answered your thread before I read this one ...
waiting for some answers before I go on .
Zinnia is on the shelf for now , as I began another project , a commission I got .
There is a modelling event at Brussels next weekend , I'll build the hull during the exposition , three full days to plank a hull , should do the trick
it is this ship I have to model :

http://users.telenet.be/kamina/
got two years to do the job , plenty of time ...
after the next weekend's event , I'll work further on "Zinnia"
Cheers ,
Laurent

Re: 1/100 HMS Zinnia ( 1915 )
Hi all ,
following Ingura's post in the tips & tricks section , I built the canvas railing around the monkey bridge and around the bridge deck .
I used therefore , instead of silk paper , thin kitchen aluminium foil ( about 0,1 mm thick ) to represent the canvas . the stanchions , which were supplied by Ingura , were soldered to 0,3 mm brass wire ...

Really easy to do , some care has to be taken when working on the aluminium foil , it is very fragile ...

Hi Jimmy ,
Thanks !
indeed , I think I got it right ...
For now , I'm busy with the scratchbuilding of cowl ventilators for the two boiler rooms and the engine room . They have a typical Royal Navy shape , with a large rounded mouth but a little tube , I ordered some on line , but no one satisfies me , too "german" ( read : Kaizerliche Marine ) for my liking ...
Pictures of that build will follow , with a "how to" article in the tips & tricks section ...
