2 guesses - When was the photo taken, and what role was Iron Duke playing at the time. All the clues are in the photo.

This was ID after conversion to a gunnery training ship---note B turret removed, a sure tip-off. Judging from the equipment fit, I'd date the photo from mid-1930's.

Thanks Steve for your comments, things in modelling do change, in my articals I always say, This is how I do it, people can look and think of easier way that helps them, we all learn from different builds, good to have you on the board. ron h

Ron it's good to be on board thank you. After years of building planes from scratch only to have them meet an unfavorable end in pieces at one point or another I fins it most satisfying to spend time with a model that will last the time over that of what I spent building it. Some planes actually lasted years but there was always that factor of the alleged date on them somewhere. As I got older this didn't make for a relaxing hobby.

Ships and subs were always my first love since the time I was a boy at the local lake in the 60's. My dad worked on subs at Mare island. My whole family was sea crazy and we never missed Victory at Sea. Going to the lake an running with the guys ships and subs is so relaxing and rewarding I'm bit good. The excitement of building that next model is always a joy.

I still fly. But I fly kits that are easily replaced taking some of the edge off my nerves and a very fast paced hobby. But it's the ships and the models like this one that are my true love. and of course WW2 and WW1 are the main drive of interest.

What's next for you? If I may ask?

Correct me if I'm wrong but this should be made "sticky" again. This is worth saving for the hull construction, litho, superstructure and home made rudder stuffing boxs.

Its show time soon and I am getting ready to show ID this year, and hopefully have her sailing again.

I have been working on some damage inflicted by the CIC, dumping dust sheets on top of the poop deck, also catching the small boats that are slung out from the side of the ship.

So here's a few photos I took while the ship was out in the garden.

Thanks Jack, we did have some one building another one to sail with her but it never got finished,
I did not sail at the show, Dave took his model out and put it on the table, a club said they were to do a show on the water, Dave looked round and all his handrails were bent and the superstructure knocked off, he was very upset, as no one owned up to doing it.
I left my model were it was.

These are the two vessels in the picture.

I saw the Duke in person at the show.
It is an imposing model. Very nice indeed.
You have to stand and look at it for some time to realise the detail and then see it for the great model it is.
Ron is another of our great modellers on the site. He forwards "how toos" as he is building, for the inexperienced. No question of build technique seems to go un-answered.
He is also starting to regularly use brass!
