Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Sorry to kick in late with my reply for the thruster thing. What timmy shows and the stern pic shows are indeed the thrusters. The bottom is a flat round plate to seal the stuff. On top of that you have a round shroud, which is indeed the light coloured curve shaped thing. Inside that shroud of course you have a propellor, but directly aft of that you have the motor to drive that prop. In the stern picture the propellor is actually directed forward, with the motor visible from the stern. These things are what we call Azimuth thrusters, they can rotate in whatever direction, easy for mooring as I know the Russians aren't really used to use tugs for mooring their large destroyers like Sovremennys and Udaloys. Possibly the Udaloys have something similar, although not proven yet.
The only difference with the drawing is that below the drawing's shroud is a round plate supported by an A frame which connects it to the central placed motor.

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Ok... Question for you guys:
I have the Udaloy kit from Trumpy. The kit shows the ships without the crossword radars atop the bridge fore and aft above the heli hangar.
Is it because they were placed later (as previously mentioned in this topic ) or is it another of those hasty research mistakes Trumpy is including with their kits?
Does the Udaloy II kit include those redars? Should I find some to install on my Udaloy, since I have already installe the missile launchers that were also missing when the ship entered service?
And the most difficult of all my qustions: Does anyone have a couple of spares for me?
P.S. Bob you were so much right about the Sovremeny kit... It is such a letdown... I started it but got so much dissapointed by it. I think that I will finish this one as is and correct the othre two I have... Excellent research...

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Nikos, let's look at the whole situation here with the Udaloys.
Your kit shows them without the radars - these would be earlier ships in the class. As with the Royal Navy, there were ships fitted For but not With the SA-N-9 initially. This was owing to the cost of the Cross Swords radar. IIRC, they were later refitted with the radars and the launchers. Earlier in the thread, there are shots of one of the Udaloy class without her launchers and radars. The Frunze/Velikiys of the Kirov Class were similarly set up - For but not With. It depends technically on which unit and when, whether she'd have them or not.
The Sovrems - yeah, go figure, it's mostly owing to Trumpy participating in Operation Epic Fail with regards to the layouts. At least, if one thing, they could have gotten the hull right, right?
Hope that helps.

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Only the early units, Udaloy herself and Vitse-Admiral Kulakov were launched without the anything. They were also the ships with the narrow flight deck. Afterwards mostly they had the forward radar set and launchers in place. Kulakov has now been refitted and has both sets in place as well as the broad flight deck. Might be a trumpy mistake, but a big one as all recent units and pictures of them have the two radars in place. "later" is pretty relative in Soviet times as that still means about 20 years ago!
The Udaloy II kit should have them as Shabanenko ALWAYS had the two sets in place.
Maybe you can scratchbuild the radars. Might be easier than having someone send them to you.

Nick, which Udaloy kit do you have? Because in the review for Panteleyev (I have the kit myself downstairs), it does include Cross Swords atop the hangar:

Here's also a nice overhead shot of Udaloy herself with the barreness of which Neptune spoke:

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
I have kit no. 04517 which is Udaloy. It includes decals for Udaloy and Admiral Panteleef, which is the one I chose to build. From what I can make out, fret H which propably inludes the radars and the additional box structure right aft the asw rocket launchers is not included.
I will scratchbuild the radars, since I have installed the vls launchers for and aft.
I have studied many picks, I will build this version:
Thanks for the help Tim...

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Oddly, if it includes Pantelyev, it should have them since, as Roel pointed out, they at least had the forward sets installed until refits - they should have all of them in more contemporary situations.

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Nick, are you sure the box of the kit says Udaloy? Stevens' only shows kits for Adm. Panteleyev (which includes Udaloy decals) and the Severomorsk, whose boxart indeed excludes the Cross Swords and has the narrow flight deck.
The Panteleyev kit includes the H sprue which has the widened deck - it's specifically for the Panteleyev kit I think, since it also has the display stand name for Panteleyev.

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Well, this is the kit and my progress so far (parts dryfitted)...
The decals are for Udaloy and Panteleef and the name plate is only for Udaloy... It has the narrow heli deck... And now crosword radars in the art box...
And by the way, the deck might look the same colour with the rest but it is not. Tricks of the camera...

Ah, now I recall - the kit is listed as Severomorsk while the box says Udaloy:

Not sure why they did that =/

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Hmm, strange. Severomorsk is also a more recent unit. I guess they wrongly packed it?
Anyway, if I were you, I'd just remove the launchers... And build her as the Udaloy herself. In the beginning she didn't carry anything. The Kinzhal system was still being tested in the Black Sea fleet by a converted Grisha. Only after that, when the system was finally approved, they started refitting the built Udaloys with it. Initially only the forward one was placed, afterwards the rest was constructed and placed.
Panteleyev, as mentioned also had the broad flight deck.
Nice results on your build so far, although the main deck colour is rather dark brown/black-ish instead of grey.

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
The deck colour will look much darker when I finish it... There is only a coat of gunship grey. The deck will be washed with gunmetal and then reddish brown...
I will build the kit radars and launchers... The only thing that pazzles me is the wide deck of Panteleyef. So I might make it Udaloy instead...
Thanks for the help guys...

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
Well guys... I think I got it...
After studying the photos of the Panteleyef kit Tim linked, I tried to find the contents of sprue H. Well guess what.. The crossword radar is not there. The wide heli deck is and the top plate radar. So where the heck were the parts for the radar?
Take a look at the pics below.
Udaloy instructions page: Panteleyef instructions page: The parts for the radars are in sprue G which is included in my kit as well. So I now have crossword radars...
But not a wide heli deck... So I am making Udaloy.
I just love the Hobby search site...

A converted Grisha you say, Roel? Got any pictures of this unique piece? I wonder what fun might be had of whiffing a modernized Grisha with an altered fit including Kinzhal.

yeah I must have them somewhere. Or maybe I didn't save them. ANyway, they're around. I think that sole unit was called Grisha IV or Grisha V. If I remember correctly she had three launchers for Kinzhal in the aft or something.

Re: Calling all Udaloy & Sovremennyy class fans
I looked it up out of curiosity, Roel - the Grisha IV was the one-off used for testing of Kinzhal. Grisha V upgraded the AK-57-2 to the AK-76-1 gun, while Grisha III I think it is included an AK-630 on the aft blockhouse superfiring the 57 and later 76mm guns. The SAM systems were up front, and I must confess, I could find the images of the upgrade helpful in giving me concepts for other situations where I consider replacing Osa-M with Kinzhal.

Hi to all, New to the forum so please help if you can. Been building model russian warships for a while now, mainly in 1/72 scale. All my models are 100% scratchbuilt. Currently got two models, Sovremenny which is finished and a Udaloy II about 90% finished. Both models are 1/72 scale. Couple of fotos of the sovremenny in the water. Both models are rc.

Hello, thanks for your comments. The guns were made from using a plastik ball at the right diameter, cut a hole out of the bottom and give a thin layer of bodyfiller. when dry remove the ball and your left with a copy. The rest is alluminium tubing and brass wire. Ive still to make one for the Udaloy II
