Just finished a 2 week trip to Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Was fortunate to catch the Stennis arriving at Pearl. What sight it was. Enjoy the pics...

Can someone tell me if these aircraft movers were used on the first cruise? (76-77) This pic was taken around 79-80.

Its a "bumper" for boats when in port.

Bumper and dock - the bottom of the cage is a steel mesh area where people can step off from the boats and onto an attached ladder (two, actually) that leads into the hull.

I'am sure you miss it just as I do! :)[/quote]

I would like to ride a carrier for about a week. Get some more photo's, eat a little "dog" after meals. But that is about it. I am still doing the reserve thing with 7th Fleet so I might try to work a week or two on the GW for an exercise if I can.

Jane's 1980-81 has a drawing of CVN-68 in her as built config in 1:1800 scale. The JBDs for cats 3 (6 sections like 1 & 2) and 4 (only 2 sections) are:

1:1800 = 2mm x 3.5mm and 2mm x 6mm
1:1 = 3,600mm x 6,300mm and 3,600mm x 10,800 mm
1:1 = 11.81' x 20.67' and 11.81' x 35.43'

Need a specific ship/time?

guys,

I have a few questions regarding 68 herself:

1 When was the lattice radar tower entirely closed up (or even replaced)?
2 When was the SPS43 radar replaced by the present SPS49? I would love to have an SPS49 atop a lattice tower (which took me forever to cut out), but I'm quite positive it never happened.
3. When did the first Hornets touch down on Nimitiz? I get the idea it was in the '90s

Thanks in advance

The F/A-18s showed up in the Fall of 1990 as we were working up to deploy to Desert Storm with CVW-9. VFA-146 and VFA-147 transitioned from A-7s to Hornets in 1989/1990. They missed the ride around the Horn CVW-9 made on Conny in the Winter of 1990 along with VF-211 and VF-24 when they transitioned from F-14As to F-14A+ ( eventually designated F-14B). We took VF-33 and VFA-82 on that trip with the rest of CVW-9. I was flying in the back of E-2C+ Hawkeyes with VAW-112.

Thanks Mark,

that resolves the Hornet issue. A least I don't have to get rid of my stash of kits.

You don't recall what the radar tower looked like in that time?

Probably since the 1998(?) to 2001 refit. You might want to check the Nimitz pages over at navsource (->http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/68.htm). Unfortunately, they are currently down (a rather frequent issue with navsource).

Here are some enlightening photos from NAVSOURCE.

This pick is from 1985. Looks like SPS-49 with the old tower.

Nimitz did a Complex Overhaul Jun 1983-Jul 1984 so I am guessing that is when she got the SPS-49

1997 with the same layout

http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/0876003.jpg

The new tower when she came out of RCOH in 2001,

and a better shot of it in 2003.

Hope that helps,

Thanks Michi and Mark; you've answered some serious questions for me. As soon as Navsource is up I'm going to have a squizz at them.

Some photos from my CVN-75 Harry S Truman visit

Post by NickMiller »

I have uploaded some photos to Photobucket from my week long visit to the Harry S. Truman last August. Links are also included to albums containing photos of other ships we passed along the way.

And finally some photos from my June 2012 visit to the National Naval Aviation Museum

Hopefully there is something of interest in these.
