Its a very promising start pingjockey. I see that your battlegroup will consist of 2 DDG-51s 1 Perry class FFG 1 Tico and your Nimitz class carrier. I hope to see more pics soon. Keep up the good work.pingjockey wrote:Here are a couple of pics of my carrier strike group. Sorry for the poor quality but I was messing around with the wife's camera and photoshop. Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
Great Idea, Nektarios, but the problem is getting the VLS concepts just to fit everything out. The turrets are one of the few things I'm keeping on the Tirpitzski, so I'm reluctant to do more. Anyways...
Tirpitzski Update - Added the Top Dome radar, bulked out the mount so it looked better. The Kite Screech radars have been fitted for the four AK-130 mountings. The SA-N-7 Gadfly mounts have been fitted on the forward mounts, I've been looking at the positions to mount the Front Dome radars for acquisition and lock. The Top Pair radars I'm debating where to put them - I'm thinking top of the Bridge, over the fire control units. Palm Frond radars will be set up one on the bridge tower, and two off the back of the stack on the platform. Bass Tilts, I have no clue where to put them as yet.

Nice done.
But if u wanna use an helipad, use it on the rear deck whit an hangar ore something.
Then u can delete the mid hangars and trow there some weapons?
Ore make an helipad behind the guns whot the old hangar next to the funnel.
And trow the radars on a tower behind the guns?
Really nice ship though atm.!

Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
I've got two helipads planned, one on either side of the funnel area - they should have enough space to land a Kamov, otherwise I'll have to measure up a helipad off, say, my Slavas and cut two from styrene to fit onto that position. I can't do a fantail helipad and still have a hangar on it, and I don't want the Iowa problem.
The radars, of which there are many, are going in many places around the superstructure and funnel area, depending on what roles they perform - Navigation, Targetting, Search and Track, of what else have you.

Hmm ok.
But is there really enough space there for helipads?
I got a tirpitz on 1.550 scale and an helicopter for an modern iowa on 1.550 scale.
And the helicopter doesnt really fit (when landing) just putting downis easy.
But landing would be a prob, right?

Looks great Sauragnmon S-300 with SA-N-7 as its backup system is unique. Maybe you should also add a short range missile system. This was standard Soviet practice. SA-N-9 is a good candidate for this.Sauragnmon wrote:Tirpitzski Update - Added the Top Dome radar, bulked out the mount so it looked better. Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
Maybe you could do a hangar like the one on CGN-38 class. How about that??? this would give you more space midships (for more weapons) and you would still have a hangar.Sauragnmon wrote:I've got two helipads planned, one on either side of the funnel area - they should have enough space to land a Kamov, otherwise I'll have to measure up a helipad off, say, my Slavas and cut two from styrene to fit onto that position. Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
I honestly don't see a hangar on any of the Virginias I've looked at on Navsource - no sign of an actual hatch between the fantail and the mk26 launcher. I still think I prefer the midships Helipad concept.
As to short-range missile system, if I recall the SA-N-7 can do relatively up close operations. Alternately, I Could put in some Kinzhal/SA-N-9 missile launchers, the foremost question becomes - Where? As it stands, space is a bit of a premium on this monster, I could potentially put some in at deck level, and I Do have the four-launcher blocks from my DML Big Pete that I could do........ I think I figured out the where - Midships, once I've verified the helipad situation, I COULD be able to put them in if I fill the old turret swing mounts and put them in on either side of the machine shop, in theory. Then the question comes of... Where do I put my Cross Swords radars??? One thought could be the other aft AA director, and somewhere else... hmmmm... Hard to say.
This thing's going to be armed to the bloody flaming teeth, I tell you. To The Teeth!!!

You cannot see it because it was a below-deck hangar to house the helicopters plus the associated magazines, stowage, and ammunition. The concept was based upon the seaplane hangar arrangements used in the Baltimore (CA 68) class and later cruisers. The helicopter would land on the raised elevator platform; with the platform lowered the hangar would be enclosed by sliding doors or hatches.

Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
There's a problem with that, being that all the steering gears and machinery for the drive system is in that area, not to mention the turrets would give them serious problems. Any sort of belowdeck hangar like that would be cutting into important equipment. Side Pads and Midships hangars are the more economical and less labour-intensive solution to the situation.
One idea to come to mind is the inclusion of fixed torpedo tubes similar to Neustrashimmy and Chabanenko, under the helipad section, almost where the original torpedo launchers were. The benefit of fixed launchers would be the allowance to fire the SS-N-15 ASW missile. It solves one situation that I've been facing, which is a blatant lack of ASW equipment save the helicopters. I've been trying, and failing, to figure out a place for a pair of RBU-6000 ASW Mortars. As there is nothing originally in that area, their inclusion wouldn't be too hard, in principle.

Perhaps a good position would be one on each side of the turret nr. 2 . I think that they could withstand the blast from the main guns.Sauragnmon wrote:One idea to come to mind is the inclusion of fixed torpedo tubes similar to Neustrashimmy and Chabanenko, under the helipad section, almost where the original torpedo launchers were. I was going to depict the Lincoln CSG from 2002 that I was part of but I think I am just going to make it a random one now. I have been working on and off on it for a while now and I pretty much want to finish it up.

A 1/700 project work in progress.....
DRAGON's USS Chandler DDG-996 kit. I got his kit in a swap with Nektarios. He used a few pieces from it, but I'll be able to complete it just fine with some scratch built and spare sprue parts. I scratch built the square radar antenna and the top mast next to it. Luckily the PE for this radar was still in the kit.
Anyone have a couple of 1/700 DESRON 10 decals?
I'm going for the USS Scott DDG-995 in 1992.
