Do you know if those carrier section cutaways behind the Kaga in that picture were from a single kit or were they scratchbuilt seperately?

That's a mirror/glass, so there's only one "cutaway". It's also not a cutaway, but a "chibimaru", or egg, Akagi. It goes with Fujimi's chibimaru series of tanks, planes, and ships: http://www.1999.co.jp/search_e.asp?Typ1 ... =chibimaru

Hello...new here...first post. No stranger to modeling but this is my first look into doing ships.

This may be a really stupid question, but has there been any word of someone doing a less expensive 1:350 Akagi than the Hasegawa? Seems strange you can get almost any US carrier from the era for a little over $100 but you cant touch a Japanese one at this scale for less than $300+.

Not that I've heard of and, frankly, not likely.

If you're not beholden to scale, then you could probably get a 1/450 Hasegawa version at a good price. Not as new but, affordable.

Okay, upon going through older posts such as this thread about the Fujimi 1/700 Kaga, I take it there is no kit out there that models Kaga after her first major reconstruction between 1934 to 1935?

This was when she got her first island configuration installed and was changed from her original 3-deck configuration to a single, full-length flight deck at top.

I am interested in this Kaga because finishing her refit by 1935 allowed her to participate in the 1937 "Panay incident" and other attacks on the Chinese mainland at about this time.

It seems to me from reading older posts that the Fujimi Kaga is made from 1940 plans, while the Hasegawa Kaga is only meant for 1941-42. If someone can point out something I've missed, please let me know.

Furthermore, it says in the wiki article on Kaga that she had the ff. changes made starting in 1938 during her 2nd reconstruction, that would prevent me from using a later era Kaga to model a 1937-38 one.

Kaga entered the shipyard on 15 December 1938, where her arrester gear was replaced by a Type 3 system and her bridge was modernized. The flight deck and hangar areas were enlarged, increasing the carrier's aircraft capacity.

The ship was completely overhauled from 15 November 1939 to 15 November 1940 before returning to active service. In the meantime, a new generation of aircraft had entered service and Kaga embarked 12 Mitsubishi A5M fighters, 24 Aichi D1A dive bombers and 36 Yokosuka B4Y torpedo bombers. Another 18 aircraft were carried in crates as spares.[22][42][Note 7]

On first look, it doesn't look that different from the later Kaga, but the wiki excerpt above says otherwise.

The idea came to me of just getting a Fujimi or Hasegawa Kaga and sticking 1/700 scale Type 90 and Type 96 fighters biplanes on it, but it just won't be accurate...

I do not have either of the references that the wiki article cites for details on the recontruction. However, I believe the one external feature added to Kaga's bridge is an narrow, sponson-like extension forward of the AA command deck level (top). It can be seen at the upper left in the first photo, covered by fragmentation hammocks. Any other modernization was probably due to equipmnet changes inside. I don't know if this appears on the Fujimi kit but, the Hasegawa kit does not have it.

Not sure what, if any, aspects of her flight deck were changed.

Hi Guys

I need some advise / assistance with the Dry Decals for the wooden deck on my 90% complete 1/350 Akagi. She has been "put aside" for a year or more because when I first tried to apply the dry decals some stayed on the wooden deck and some peeled straight off and were no use (ruined).

Is there a "trick" to this? I did all of my previous 1/35 Military with dry decals for several years and normally worked perfectly on plastic so I am used to dry decals.
I assume the wooden deck is not a good bonding surface? (I have NOT put anything like a sealer etc on the deck, its straight from the pack)

My Akagi is out of retirement now and I have found most of the un-fitted parts & have the rest of the dry decals to fit. I just need assistance, help!

Just noticed HLJ has a Fujimi 1/700 Kaga full hull for August release, hurrah!

Surely that must mean the hull form is on the CAD files for 1/350... one can live in hope.

Many thanks to Cadman for posting an in-box review of the new 1/700 Akagi kit today. From his posted pics, it appears that Hasegawa managed (again) to execute properly scaled flight deck planking. With rain gutters to boot.

Gee, imagine that, Fujimi. It can be done. For both plastic and wood sticker.

A Kaga flight deck question: on this link (3rd photo you can select) a model of Kaga is shown with multiple greys in the metal sections of her flight deck.

Is this how her deck was coloured, or is this some artistic licence the model maker has used? It's quite fetching and I used this scheme of greys on the 1/700 'study' model of Kaga I did in anticipation of the big 1/350 kit.
