It appears that Yamashita Hobby is releasing a decal sheet for 1/700 hull markings for this class. No flags, though: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10435260

Meh. I don't see anything there that makes the upgrade set a must-have. No brass barrels or etched torpedo loading gantries. Most of the parts can be scrounged from other etch sets. The base kit itself does look really nice, though!dadedicos wrote:Didn't waste much time getting this one out!...

The brass parts for the Masts would work well for building a more realistic foremast out of brass-rod, though.gscott wrote:Meh. I don't see anything there that makes the upgrade set a must-have. And the forward railings are curved for the forecastle.
And the turret details are better than the generic detail sets.
It looks basically to be a time-saver.... But the fact that it doesn't have complete PE Masts would mean a lot of extra work in mast Fabrication.... Mixed feelings about that one.
And they need a set for the Akitsuki.

Nice. Are those the same parts you use on your builds, Dan? I've been eyeing a few Rainbow sets but haven't found much in the way of reviews. The Rainbow funnel grates look really nice, too.

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
Unfortunately, these had not been released at the time of my PR Fubuki builds. Back then, Tom's DD PE was the only PE available with Fubuki class TT reload gantries. These have some 3D relief, and appear to be more substantial, more like the real thing. I used Rainbow gantries and funnel grills for my Yugumo class builds, and am very impressed with them.

Next up from Yamashita Hobby will be a late war release of their Type III Fubuki kit as Inazuma, 1944: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10466647

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
Dan, what's with this upcoming Ayanami from Yamashita?
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10525064
The machine translation lost me. This ship was lost so early in the war; did it get some mods to the bridge & funnels after 12/7/41 but before its loss?
Or does their earlier release actually reflect the fit on some pre-war date and the new release is accurate for its wartime appearance?
TIA

I'm currently out of town, but back in a few days, Harold. It will be easier for me to address it then. I need access to my references.

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
There seems to be a difference in the bridge face. The earlier release has the bridge made up of straight segments while this appears to be smoothly round like Fubuki. I'm only saying this based on squinting at that picture and comparing to my built copy of the earlier one. I have no idea of the history of thus refit but maybe it's something for Dan to go on.

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
Ok, I've had the opportunity to go through my references, and yes, there is some variation in the bridge faces at the compass bridge deck level.
Ayanami and Shikinami had smooth, semi circular bridge faces, as did the Fubuki Is and Uranami. Amagiri, Asagiri, Sagiri, and Yugiri have a slightly different appearance in that they have a slightly extended "chin" with some angular planes at the front. Their bridge windows and the forward portion of the bridge roof followed this configuration. See pics below. By wartime, those four ships had lost that lip on the bridge face below the bridge windows. Oboro, Sazanami, Akebono, and Ushio reverted back to the smooth semi circle bridge face.
My takeaway here is that Yamashita Hobby inadvertently molded its original Fubuki II/Ayanami kit using the the altered bridge face with the "chin". My Ayanami kit has it. This new Ayanami kit is meant to correct the error.
This mean the original Ayanami and Type II kits are good for depicting. Amagiri, Asasgiri, and Sagiri. Yugiri is not eligible because she gained the altered air intake hoods at the base of the funnels that next appeared on Oboro, Sazanami, Akebono, and Ushio.
BTW, in a recent Model Art issue (the one on the Fubukis with all Yamashita Hobby kit builds), a new kit depicting a late war Ushio, NV7, will be their next release.

Exactly as I suspected (without knowing the fine detail, which you've supplied thank you very much).Dan K wrote:My takeaway here is that Yamashita Hobby inadvertently molded its original Fubuki II/Ayanami kit using the the altered bridge face with the "chin". So, I'll take my eye off a certain inexpensive "original" Ayanami I'm considering on eBay and wait for the new one; in order to build the ship as it was during the Pacific War.
But my Yamashita kit #1 Fubuki (of hogging fame
Much appreciated, Dan

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
Finally building my Yamashita Fubuki.
What a lovely kit; but oi! the tiny parts that other mfrs would mold in place.
Shades of Flyhawk; just now I'm affixing cable reels 1 mm wide to the foredeck aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Accuracy takes a personal toll, especially on those of us with aging body parts

Best styrene injection reels on the market.
Just take it slow. Hopefully, you will post it to the gallery at some point.

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
I'm about to start on a Shoho. I'd sort of like to do Sazanami to go with her. I see that Yamashita now has a '42 Akebono available. I *think* from reading this thread that those two are pretty close. Is that a correct reading? Are there differences that I should try to model still?
Thanks

Re: Calling all IJN Fubuki class Toku-gata fans
They are identical, save for #1 funnel ID markings, the bottom of an auxiliary pipe on #2 funnel, and placements of 13mm ammo boxes and of a torpedo adjustment table. If you going to build to that level, I can post pics tomorrow.
