I would love to see written discussion of this. I can't imagine how this wood object would be more stable and effective than a quantity of heavy sailcloth deployed in the conventional manner as a drogue.

Perhaps if it was disposed at the end of a pole like an ancient steering oar it may be more useful for fine navigation. The fact that it should be present on a new ship like Unryu is also mystifying.
If an unfriendly power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war.

Hi T

Actually there were 5 Kanji characters not 4, on my AOTS from which this pic comes it says it was a Samurai banner it seems she only wore this one on her final mission. HI, RI, HO, KEN, TEN in English should be something like (Injustice, Fairness, Law, Power, and Heaven) HTH

The character-by-character translation doesn't seem to combined into anything that makes sense. I assume the entire set of 5 characters makes up a phrase whose meaning is different from the meaning of the individual characters.

Yes, it is. I conversed on it with a friend of mine, who's a Japanese-born professor of Continental Philosophy and East Asian Studies... it's actually an old Confutian phrase, basically it's an old war banner. "Fault loses to Reason, Reason loses to Laws, Laws lose to Rights, Rights lose to Heaven" Essentially it says that there is always a higher, nonhuman force in the universe than anything we can do. It was first flown as a war banner between 1718 and 1784 by Ise Sadatake. A rather basic and yet deep concept in itself.

Hi.
That's the Tamiya's 1/350 Yamato I'm currenly working on.
The hull is completed and waiting for the forward superstructure, funnel and aft bridge to be glued (and the funnel painted). Don't know yet, how to fill those thin gaps between the forward superstructure and hull. The main guns are almost finished, the secondary are only started. Larger AA are done, but the smaller ones are to be done.
Hope to see your comments and recommendations.

I have looked over the the pages of this thread but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I like to build full hulled ships, I can't bring myslf to do a waterline, it's like only half a ship to me... Anyways, I have found 2 different full hull model kits I'm interested in but would like some insight to their quality. I have found a 1/700 Fujimi full hull Musashi (there was a full hull Yamatoon the web-site but it's gone?) and a 1/450 Hasegawa full hull Yamato. I prefer 1/700 but these are priced almost identical. Not counting the difference in scale which of these kits are best? Is the Musashi Identical to the Yamato not counting AA and scout plane "tracks" ?

TIA,
Jeff

I have no experience with Fujimi's 1/700 scale Yamato. Hasagawa's 1/450 scale Yamato is quite old and crude by modern standards. Mushashi and Yamato were never identical.

Actually the aircraft handling arrangement of the two ships were identical. The only basic differences in the area were:
1. The bracings in the antenna mast on top of aircraft crane were slightly different.
2. The linoleum walkway next to the aircraft trolley rails had a slightly different orientation.

But there were always other differences between the two ships. When first built, the ladders, platforms and the observation copulas on either sides of the tower bridge of the two ships were somewhat different. And Yamato was completed with her hull side portholes glassed on in normal peace time configuration, while Musashi was completed was those portholes plated over as a typical wartime blackout and damage control measure. In 1943 Yamato's tower bridge was modified to become more similar to Mushashi's, and her scuttles were also blanked off just like in Musashi. But throughout 1943 the radar fit of the two ships were different. In 1944 the radar fit of the two ships were made the same, but the two ships received substantially different AA fits.

From the time when they were first completed to the beginning of 1944, Musashi was the better equipped of the two ships. A refit in 1944 made the Yamato the better armed and better equipped of the pair. The intention was to bring Musashi up to the same standard when the equipment became available, but she was sunk before that could be done.

Hey guys!
Been enjoying your posts.
I am currently hard at work on a Tamiya 700th Yamato which I'm hoping to publish here when I'm done, maybe in a month or so. Building a Yamato has been a dream of mine for a long time. I'm 2/3rds through the build now and am beginning to contemplate a Musashi as well. Very exciting!

Am I correct in concluding that the Kure 1/10 Yamato has 4 single 25mm MGs on the crane deck, and not 2?
Does anyone have the final tally of MGs at the time of sinking?
And we've decided definitely no emergency rudder. Yes?

One other question.
Skulski and AOTS puts two twin 25mm mounts mid way up the tower bridge. Tamiya doesn't. Who's right on that?

I'm all about upping that gunbarrel count, but of course, I want it to be right. I love all the single mounts shipped for the Leyte operation, but then again I love the 'ring of turrets' in the final configuration too. Kinda wish I could do both. If I was a 12 year old kid again, I probably would...

The twin mounts half way up the towers are 13mm AA machine guns, not 25mm AA auto canons. The Kure model shows that MG mount as well. But like all other machine gun caliber ship-board AA weapons it must have been a pretty useless thing.

Does the Kure model show any single 25mm mounts on the crane deck? There are only two 25mm triple mounts that I can see.

The ship definitely had A emergency rudder. That is the little things under the keel right ahead of the main rudder. But it seems latest research does not argue for A Second emergency rudder slung on the side next to the stern.

Callen, I completely agree with you... I'm considering actually Four different Yamato builds... Yamato as originally built, Musashi as she would have been with her completed AA Upgrade to standardize her with 1944 Yamato, Shinano with the 10cm AA I've heard she was rumored to have, and Dewa, the proposed Super Yamato. I know, they were never more than a rumor, but hey, I just love Big Warships with Big Guns, and nothing to me is sexier than the thought of a ship with Six 20" main guns.

First on my list is actually Musashi/Yamato 1944, since I'll be buying the "Super-Yamato" kit so I can get the 10cm mounts for another project. Kit-bash time! *grabs hammer*

Sounds like you're going to have some fun!
Just out of curiosity, where did you get the name 'Dewa'?
Was that the actual name proposed for Hull 111? Or were you thinking of later projects?

I'm an aspiring fiction author as well and have toyed with the idea of writing a novel about Hull 111 as if she actually were completed. I always thought the name 'Kii' would be nice, for a number of reasons. Don't have any idea how plausible a name it would be (there is a Kii peninsula) though I think it might have been used as a ship name in the 19th Century.

Love to see pics of your builds. If they're already out there, give me a link. :thumbs_up_1:

I chose Dewa because it's one of the prefectures of Japan that did not have a ship named after it, at all. Kii, there were rumors of a design to fit the name. Dewa's one of the provinces on Northern Honshu. The rumors in the 20's included the mention of a Kii class being worked on, potentially something like the No13's I might surmise. I haven't got any really good quality pics, but I'm sitting here beside a nice digital camera I might take another whack at snapping some pics of the stuff I've got done.

As I'm slowly working my way through the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato to show her in bad shape settled slightly on the bay floor (using the end of war pictures of the torn up Japanese capital ships as inspiration) in 1946 as the Montana sails by to the surrender ceremony I'm wondering if anyone knows of plans for the Yamato for refits/new installations beyond the actual end of the war? Actually, barring this is there any kind of a tweaks list for the 1/350th kit to bring it to an accurate "as sunk" layout?

Thanks,
Matt

1/200 Yamato / IJN Fitting Order

Post by herrmill »

Guys,

I'm planning to order resin fittings from Ocean Voyage for my small Nichimo fleet & wanted to see if there was anyone else that may be interested in going in with me on a purchase for their Yamato or other 1/200 IJN model. I'm mainly interested in the secondary & AA arms along with some selected deck fittings. Their aircraft are very nicely done & I'll try to get these as well if they'll sell a few at a time.

Factory wants a 100 piece MOQ per item which is a bit hard to swallow & why I am seek additional buyers. I'll negotiate this down into something more far more manageable. Let me know here or by PM/email if anyone is interested. I plan to place my order by end of the month & will know pricing once I send them my list.

Here's an idea of what you can expect compared to Nichimo & Konishi (images courtesy of Steve S. here Modelwarship). OV fittings are shown on the right.

For those of you that missed it, the 1/700 Yamato by Anthony Kochevar (shown in the March 06 What's New section of the board) is absolutely amazing:

Anthony also lists a link to his Full Build article. This 21 page document is as in detail as his model. Regardless of what scale you build. Check this one out!

I have 4 interested parties from another ship modeling forum who want to go in on a purchase.

I received confirmation from VM yesterday on what they can offer from their Nagato fittings. We have 4 groups available & all are based on 100 MOQ per set.

1. Type 89 40 cal 12.7cm twin cannon (one mount)

2. Type 96 25mm triple, double & single 25mm MG (one of each mount)

3. Ships boat set (5 boats plus cradles)

5. Misc deck fitting set (vents, small range finder, anchor, cleats, etc)

With the interest we already have, the HA AA & MG should not pose a problem. I'm seeing what I can do to get the others down to a more reasonable level. Unfortunately VM is not willing to part with other parts, only what is shown here.

I have been sent photos of each set but cannot post the file type they sent so send me an email if anyone else is interested so I can reply with details. I expect to know costs tomorrow.
