Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

Allen said it was a valve - it's a wheel and presumably connected to some piping, which usually denotes a valve control of some sort.

The big character at the top means 'open'.

Spoke about it with Petrogator, who contacted some Japanese-reading folk, and it seems the smaller writing says something about a manual main valve.

Personally, I am most interested in seeing whether Musashi, like Yamato, is broken into 2 pieces (since we know that she suffered two large underwater magazine detonations right after sinking). And whether any of her 18" turrets might, by some miracle, be found right-side up, as unlikely as her capsizing makes that possibility.

The live stream is quite fantastic. You can simply rewind and watch the whole thing. Musashi is a real mess. The entire center part of the ship blew herself up and debris is scattered over a 900 x 500 meter area. The stern and bow sections are away to the side, heavily damaged. She looks a lot worse than Yamato. Those two magazine detonations after she sank really tore Musashi to pieces.

Plus she is lying at about 3x the depth that Yamato is at, so there was more time for debris to scatter as she sank....

I bet the same thing that blew up Yamato caused Musashi to blow...damn beehive AA shells.

Robert Lundgren pointed out to me that WW2 Japanese battleships had a disturbing and common tendency to blow up if they capsized. I don't have time to look it up, but there were at least two other ones that suffered this fate besides Yamato and Musashi. As I recall he attributed this to the fact that the impact detonation fuses on the IJN's big shells were very sensitive and probably were the reason that once they started rolling around the hold would lead to disaster.

Whatever it was, it sure tore it apart into little pieces!!! This is a much bigger mess then Yamato.

I was inspired to do a 3-D model of the Musashi after seeing the expedition yesterday. I'm looking for some reference photos in general of anyone's finished models. I haven't scoured this entire thread yet, but If someone had them on hand I'd appreciate it. I have the orthographics of the top and side views, but it's hard to get a feel for the ship through them. I'd like to buy a set myself and have on to hold and examine, but it's a bit costly right now for me. Could anyone help me out?

Having studied the below photo (the best size I have found so far) of the chrysanthemum area I am convinced we are looking at the remains of �the� wood chrysanthemum, having partially rotted away and lost its 'corrugated' face over the intervening years, not the 'background' where one has �fallen� from so to speak. One thing to take note of is the very different coral encrustation (or lack thereof) / texture on the �chrysanthemum�, and the colour, as opposed to the surrounding metal. That, in my experience, has been a very noticeable / tell-tale sign when transitioning / viewing the change of encrustation / texture between different �materials� that have been u/w (underwater) for some time.

Have you done a search for "Musashi" in the main site's model gallery? Lots of people have built the Musashi over the years, to varying degrees of detail and accuracy.

It seems a lot of these photos are just 1 shot of the finished product.

Sometimes the search results link you directly to the first page of each model instead of the overall "index" that shows the rest of the photos in a frame on the left. A more reliable way to make sure you're reaching the "proper" page is to use the catch-all Gallery page and use your browser's Ctrl+F search function to locate the entries for Musashi. The links on that Gallery page should all take you to the correct index page for each model.

Well that's not what they said during their commentary with the video, IIRC. They thought it 'missing'? To which, as I say above, I disagree; I believe the chrysanthemum crests 'corrugated' face has only partially rotted away, in the process 'losing' its petals so to speak, so we are left with a 'flattened' petal-less crest as it were.

There is NO doubt whatsoever that we are looking at wood. Have emailed David (Mearns) re the chrysanthemum - or lack there-off - and he replied "...................we could clearly see the wood, even the white worm tubes that are only found on wood. We may have said missing but that is commentary for the general public in that the expectation of a gold chrysanthemum was missing."
