Silly question but what is the optimal weather to do painting?I'm still new in this business of building model warships

I guess it might fall to personal preference. It's been down below freezing here and my garage isn't heated so it makes for having a steady hand while airbrushing dang near impossible while the icicles form off the end of my nose!!! Honestly speaking though, you do want somewhat of a warmer atmosphere and dryer climate helps. I have heard that hotter weather mixed with humidity extends drying time for paints. Plus condensation can build up in your airbrush line, so it pays to have a water trap attached in line to your airbrush. As far as colder weather goes, aside from just being cold, I worry that the colder the air (freezing) may affect my air compressor and thus the paint job, so I just don't until it warms up a little more. I believe it was in the upper 30's to lower 40's today so I probably could have airbrushed ok in it. I don't really have a solid answer. I guess my "optimal" would be airbrushing in 70 degree weather right now!! That would be nice. Thanks silvershadow.

yea my situation is quite different where I build my models I got this loft space, and can mostly build only in the evenings since during the day it can get easily 40 degree Celsius. I try to pack up all stuff that can dry out and store it in a cooler place during the day. ^^) Maybe I should think of only painting on rainy days ha ha

Rob, I wish I knew what you meant, but don't give up. I also wanted to say thank you for helping provide the drawings for the hangar layout in the "Calling all USS Enterprise CVN-65 fans" thread (page 14). It was a tremendous help in figuring out the hangar deck, so thank you very much.

I have been working on getting the deck tractors, forklifts, and other maintenance deck vehicles prepped for painting. I added some more detail to a few of them, which are in the photos. I also coiled up some hoses made from strips of lead foil to be placed on the two fire fighting deck tractors. The larger forklift received a few extra details as well.

You sure have a nice fleet of deck vehicles! That JAG kit looks Very impressive! It does look so impressive , in fact, that I spent the last 20 minutes looking for it on the net. All I found was reviews (without revealing where they got there samples from) So for those of us who don't have the highest security clearence to access Top Secret Pentagon files, or friends within the old KGB, can you tell us where we can get our hands on this praticular Modern deck vehicles set? I want a 1/350 zamboni sooo bad, you can't imagine!!! I just finished my 1/350 Sochi Winter Games diorama, and this is the last item I need to complete it!

Laci, the $$$ for the JAG/Admiralty deck vehicles set is well spent! Though the balckdog tractors are far superior, but with the JAG set you get all the forklifts and the crane.

I think freetime carries JAG/ Admiralty, but I have gotten all of mine direct from Admiralty. Contact them direct, as their website can be hit or miss, and give it a few days, as I have found that they (one man shop) are not always the fastest at responding to emails.

If that fails, shoot me an email. I have 3 sets, all slated for near-future projects, but I can spare one for the time being seeing as you are much closer to an actual "need" for the set than any of my future projects.

Laci, the JAG deck vehicles are now produced by a company called Admiralty Model Works. I have added a link directly to the set on their website. http://admiraltymodelworks.com/admiral/ ... l?Itemid=0 The only bad thing is, they don't have a photo included, so it's hard to get an idea of what you are paying for. Anyway, my photo above with all the vehicles is most of this set. The "grayish" vehicles with the tilly and "Zamboni for your Sochi Olympic diorama" are included with the Admiralty Model Works set. There were a couple other deck tractors that I opted not to use from the AMW set due to the size difference with the Black Dog deck tractors. Anyway, thanks and hope this helps.

Thanks Doug for the info and the awesome progress so far. Can you maybe link also the location of the "Tilly crane" and etc, I know you mentioned it in page 12 but having a link is much easier to find. Also what i wanted to know is how many sets of each do one need to have a full working deck of the vehicles you purchased.

The link for the "tilly crane" is located in the post above for the Admiralty Model Works set. It's actually designed for an LHD, so if you are planning on using it for a CVN, you will need to modify it. Also, all the deck vehicles you see in the above photos are from two (2) different sets. The first being the Admiralty Model Works LHD modern deck vehicles set which includes the Tilly Crane, forklift, aircraft tow tractors, deck scrubber, etc..., and the second set being the Blackdog 1/350 deck tractors accessories set located here - http://www.blackdog.cz/s350.html This is their main website although I have never ordered anything direct from them. Below are the freetimehobbies.com links for the above two sets (not sure of availability though). Hope these help. After I cleaned my pants immedietly after looking at the price, I ordered a set right off the bat. ( I still find it pricey, but guess I don't HAVE to eat every day...) And ordering with your help was MUCH easier than trying sneak past the CIA.

You've inspired me to dig out my Enterprise kit from the stash and give her a go after a 6 year break, and go all out on her, taking onboard the lessons I learnt with my Nimitz build and taking it a step or 2 further. Don't think my bank manager will be too happy with the spend i've got lined up though . That said I will spare the forum yet another CVN-65 WIP thread lol.. I'm seriously impressed by the build, keep it up and please keep us updated..
