Hi all ,

hereby some progress I made during my last vacation in France , while the weather wasn't sometimes that good , kids were looking at a DVD , I did model instead ...

I built the engine room escape hatch , a rope locker , two water tanks ( SW & FW ) , a part the galley skylight , two "Julia" dinghies . As I had no idea if those dinghies were clinked or carvel built , I built them with a carvel skin .

I also started with the build of one of the two motor boats

the way I do my boats has been put a long while ago on the "tips & tricks" section :

Hi Peter ,

I downloaded the free version of Quick Time , but am unable to see the "Roode Zee" video you made ...

hereby some further works done on "Zinnia" . I built those last two days the two signalling lamps on each side of the pilot house , here under the way I did it :

On most pictures of "Zinnia's" sister-ships , those lamps were painted navy grey , but I have some fotographic evidences that they were painted black on "Zinnia" under Belgian flag .

Hi Guys ,

It's been a long time , but I was involved in another project for a few months .

Hereby what I certainly find annoying in scratchbuilding a model , all those little odds & bits that have to be done to get a good looking model :

the 27 ft whaler's davits , made out of cardboard , the elevating gear is made from brass rod & tube , with some paper added on , the coin is a US "quarter" :




the davits on the port side :




the other davits , two pairs for the motor boats :



and two pairs for the little "Julia" dinghies :



building up the front funnel rigging :







the funnel rigging being painted & the two steam whistles added , with their piping :



four stove pipes had to be built :

one on the f'c'stle deck :



one coming from the PO mess , in front of the hatch near the CO's cabin :




a third one on the boat's deck , near the port whaler davit :



the fourth one comes on the after main deck , exhausting the gasses from the Wardroom stove , no picture ...

Crow's nest under construction :



the winch to be used in conjunction with the boom on the front mast , to load & unload heavy cargo from under the PO mess :



stair from the f'c'stle deck to the main deck , ammunition davit and the same winch as above :



the after funnel :



four little ventilators on the f'c'stle deck , to exhaust air from the washplaces , WC , sailor's mess :



the rudder servo :

the most annoying task was not the funnel rigging , but the 4 little stove pipes , and the 2 steam whistles

Very nice results Laurent!!! Love to see those big models come together. I also love your originality with different materials and the results you achieve with those methods!
I know what you mean with those annoying fittings, after the hull and superstructure the ship is practically made... Yet not realistic enough and so you have to continue instead of starting something new

I'm building at a really slow pace now , as I have some other project , nothing to do with ships but with 1/72 planes : I intend to scratchbuild a Boeing 307 , the first pressurized cabin plane , a civilian plane based on the Boeing 299 , which led to the B-17 , using an "Academy" B-17-G kit , using the wings & tail ...

For now , what happened on "Zinnia" ( very little )

the f'c'stle deck got his stanchions & wire , the stanchions are brass PE parts , the 0,1 mm thick wire is out of aluminium :



the front jackstaff is on his place ( 0,5 mm thick brass wire ) :


the towing beam on the after deck , made out of a 1mm brass tube , being flattened with pliers , the support is made with 0,5 mm brass wire , the whole has been glued with CA glue


I'm finishing for now the last motorboat , and will fit shortly all the boats ( 6 of them ) under their davits .

the further progress :

I enhanced the look of one of the two 27 ft whalers , by adding gratings on the bottom , replacing all the sitting planks , & add a "mahogany" cardboard margin plank :





I also made some blocks , out of cardboard either


the port & stbd lights are on place :



I put the whole superstructure on a letter weighing machine


it weights 110 grams :


the coaling hatches are glued on :


During the war , the RN added some protection to the chart room sliding doors . I presume those protection were made out of wood , painted grey




I covered the starboard whaler with its protection tarpaulin :


So , I may consider now this model finished at 90 % , I still have to finish those two motor boats , put them on their cradles , fit the whole rigging around all the boats , and it'll be done ...

I'm preparing a complete costs evaluation , RC rigging included , you'll get this at the end of the year .
