Dan, thank you very much for the video and drawing.

I want to draw attention to some points comparing the video to your latest drawing. At 2.10 you can clearly see there is a "double chevron" where the colour changes just forward of the fore 5" mounts. There also seems to be another dark line behind the bridge, so that chevron also seems to be dark-light-dark. And the middle elevator seems to be light, not just the forward. The first two of these features are also visible in the bombing photos. Also at 2.10 in the video, you can see the demarcation line between the wood section and steel section at the front of the flight deck. The colours look the same in black and white but it would be impossible to tell if the wood is painted, or if the steel is painted the same colour as the wood.

Based on that my interpretation is this:

Most of the early color sources, such as Maru Special #6 , and even the Tamiya 1/700 instructions, show original grey in some areas on the flight deck, so I think your interpertation is pretty good.

One other point about Zuikaku in her final fit. Her mast was damaged during the Phillipine Sea, and was refitted with yardarms that swept back at an angle, like the Unryus and the refitted Junyo.

Thanks again Dan, I'll see which way I go. It's funny because I've had this kit in my stash for something like two years. Just by chance this CASF thread jumped to the top of the list and I started reading it, now I'm itching to get this built!

Just in case there's any doubt about the change to the V shaped yardarms............ Also, a Type 13 radar was mounted on the mast, under the yardarms.

So they are V shaped upwards, backwards or both?

Interesting, I will bear that in mind, and the new radar set too :wave_1: Are those 25mm single mounts on the flight deck? I assume they aren't permanent, otherwise how would the planes take off and land with a bunch of AA guns in the way?

I suggest using the postwar Junyo mast/yardarm arrangement as a guide.

Yes to single 25mm mounted temporarily on the deck. I believe the corners of their base bolted to the tiedown holes on deck.

Zuikaku 1944

Post by garyrunnalls »

Great info on here so does anyone know the best 1/700 porthole cover plates available? I'm building the new Fujimi 1944 Zuikaku and have decided to add cover plates and those mostly bellow water-line fuel tanks that I wish Fujimi would have included in this otherwise fantastic kit. Oh, and thanks to Dan Kaplan, for the Great research and interest on these ships!

I would recommend the newer LionRoar set #LORLE700090. I wish I'd had this set when working on my Maya. No cutting. Every cover is mounted separately on plastic backing. Just peel off.

Thanks Dan!! The LionRoar porthole covers arrived and well worth the money, no cutting and just perfect. Mine have been going on pretty fast in rows glued down with Tamiya brush-on cement.

Nice pics of Shokaku model and airwings! Love the hull and seems perfect colors for IJN red anti-fouling.

Nice Shokaku by Robert Apfelzweig added to the gallery here.

Also added the link to the compendium of builds in first post in this thread.

IJN ZUIKAKU Leyte Gulf colour question

Post by loganTLR »

HI

Really simple question.

I'm gathering material for my ZUIKAKU build. From what I've seen and read, the green camo was carried on to the decks, bulkheads and overhangs. But, were the deckheads painted on green as well or did they remain grey?

TIA

Most unlikely. No real reason to do so.
