Meanwhile, I tackled the last area of battle damage: the area to the inside of the stacks.
I only had blurry photos of this area at first, and at high tide, and I had misinterpreted a wire with wreckage hanging down as a crack in the hangar deck.
So I filled this with superglue and sanded smooth.
Sharper pics at low tide also showed a missing plate in the hangar deck, at the water level. This was cut out, and had it's edges thinned.
I 'dented' the aft stack a bit by scraping plastic away with a n.15 blade:
Next, I adding the damaged internals. I started by making a piece of bulkhead in the way I described before in this thread:
and glued it in place. I also added some adjacent less damaged compartment bulkheads the the front of it.
Now I added the support structure beams I could make out on the photo's:
Several pieces of rubble, like this one, were constructed separately:
glued in place:
and added more detail and rubble to, in situ:
After repeating this a couple of times, this is the result:
Some of the pics I worked from:
Cheers!

Indeed. I can't recall every seeing anyone capture battle damage to the extent and with the finesse that you have. Unreal.

Fine damage indeed ! ? !
once all the colours are homogenised it will really pull together with the dark/light and shade!

That's the plan indeed! The painting will be the real fun!

Me too, me too!
Luckily, not too much is left: the AA platforms forward of the island, one rudder and two propellers, two masts, and observation platform at the starboard stern.
Cheers,
Marijn

Marijn, that is some spectacular modelling of metal carnage right there. Can't wait to see what you do with the paint and weathering.

Can't wait to see it painted too!

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do much modelling lately. Too much new music to study for a couple of upcoming gigs...
But that will out of the way soon.

How are you going to make them? Scratch-build?
All I have lying around is the props of Lexington. I'll see if I can start from there (carving them down), but more likely they will be scratch built indeed.
But first I have to finish the last AA platforms near the bow

Finally back at the bench...
I finished the last platforms, the ones closest to the bow:
The basis of the 5' platforms comes from the Lionroar PE set, but had to be modified heavily because the guns are removed. The star-shaped parts came from Bruno Gire's PE set, which was very useful! Thanks Bruno! For the same reason, and also to get them finer and more correct, the gussets and supports underneat had to be scratchbuilt.
Cheers,
Marijn

I do not know whether I should cheer due to the awesomeness of this build or puke because I feel like a hack watching this.

well done Marjin
