The USS Brooke DEG-1 is finally in the water and underway after residing in my navy base dio since about last summer.

Looking at that, I can no lie literally smell the salt air. Great photos as well.

I've started a new build; the new 1/700 Niko USS Cromwell DE-1014 (USS Dealey Class Destroyer Escort)

Your railings look really good. It seems like you've made painting a lot harder. Is there some reason involving the resin that requires them to be placed so early? Or is this your standard way of doing things?

Thanks, Dan! I am enjoying your build, too.

Although, I hate to mask and paint. I've developed a technique for attaching railings, right to the resin/plastic, for better adhesion and I then use the railings as boundaries for my brush while painting the decks by hand after an over all airbrushing of the hull and bulkhead color. If I get a little deck paint on the bulkheads and railings, I just touch them up with a little thinned paint and a tiny manual brush. This method also covers the shinyness of the CA glue on the railings.

I'll leave railings off where, if they were in place, it would be impossible to get a manual brush into.

I would think, in my opinion, this is less tedious and time consuming as masking and painting. I have a hard time pulling paint off with masking tape, no matter what tips and tricks I follow.

Also, as a self-discipline issue, if I don't attach the railings, first, I may not be in the mood for quite some time to attach them later, in the final stages of the build.

Painting that way makes sense. The railing as a boundary is a good idea.


I'd try it but I can't paint a deck by hand very well. I don't like to mask either so I try to avoid it as much as possible. I think I have kind of built myself into a railing PE corner on this one.

I've seen Carl's models at the NAT's, and his technique/build process definitely works. His ships are beautiful. My fumble fingers couldn't do that.
