Calling all IJN Myoko-class (妙高) fans

Thanks Dan! What about the colours? Did she have the white funnel and rangefinder at Komandorski?

I dunno. There is one photo of her taken from Maya during the battle, but it's a bit dark and distant. It certainly doesn't look like a white topped director, or funnel, at that point.

Btw, there is a second, starboard side photo of Nachi taken in June that also shows the Type 21 radar in place.

Thanks Dan. That's a bit disappointing, I'm drawn to the white funnel as an interesting little patch of colour in my otherwise very grey IJN cruiser line-up but I'm not interested in the June refit because I wanted to build her as she appeared at the Komandorski battle with the early war "clean" bridge, extra windows, no radar. I might fudge it, but good to know if I'm being deliberately artistic.

Given that many ships wore the white topped directors through 1943, I'm thinking you could at least depict that.

I just picked up a 1/350 Myoko 1942 version for a decent price. Does anyone here have any opinions on the Flyhawk update etch set FH350070? I already got the Aoshima fret and replacement weapons sets. I'm open to suggestions for additional upgrades and I still need to go through this thread for needed modifications.

I think Joe Simon built his Myoko with that upgrade set. Perhaps touch base with Joe.

Anyone ever try this ? Seems like a knock off/copy from a plastic one.
I wonder if I can use just the P.E. set in to a plastic one.

I presume you all have seen this one already? It, too, shows her radar & admiral's flag atop her mainmast, etc.

And the Japanese interviews postwar indicated that NACHI was damaged enough that she first went from Paramushiro to Ominato, but the heavy repairs couldn't be done there, so she came down to Sasebo NavYd.

According to the 'Cruiser Bible', this was taken on 10 July 1943 as Nachi was departing Paramushiro for Kiska during the first evacuation attempt.

Regarding the color schemes. By any chance, did any of Myoko-class have other camouflage rather than grey paint all over above the waterline? I found a picture of a Myoko-class cruiser � claiming it was Ashigara. But I guess it actually was Myoko.

P.S. Got an Aoshima's 1/350 Ashigara. It would be the next project after Pola (and maybe Ukuru-class).

Thanks. So I was correct that this picture was Myoko, not Ashigara. Well... Grey Pola, grey Ukuru, grey #28 sub chaser, grey Ashigara I would need some Royal Navy dazzle after those.

And AFAIK the camo scheme in the well known photo Dan posted was only applied while laying as a cripple at Singapore, never used while 'operational'. Always previously just grey, correct?

The only other camo variation is seen in that pic of Nachi further above in this thread, wearing a white #2 fuunel in the Aleutians, 1943.

Well, thats the artist's rendition of the colour/s. And given he did not actually match the actual hull patten correctly, then I am not sure how much faith one should place in his chosen colouring. Just saying.

Gents, here is a larger image of the one G-opt posted of the painting of Myoko at Singapore (by Ernest Buckmaster in 1945 ). Same caveat as above goes for the authenticity of the colour of the camo, maybe even more so, as when looking more closely, not only did the artist not get the camo scheme outline correct, he did not get the actual 'look' of the upperworks to very well match the real thing correct either.

So if I was a modeler - which I am not - I would be treating those colours in the painting with a large grain of salt.

BTW, this is not in any way meant as criticism to G-opt, as he was only no doubt trying to be helpful by posting the painting .
