EJ doesn't know exactly, as I made the turrets from drawings to scale (so, no compromises) but I've seen several models using the WEM turrets and Trumpeter kit:

for example (and a very good example at that)

What color out of the bottle from Tamiya or Polyscale is close to the grey used on the Hood in May of 1941? Tamiya makes a color Called "Royal Navy Light Grey," but I think its way to light to be used on Hood in 1941. Most models of her that I see are painted in a pretty dark shade of grey. Also, EJFoeth who's model of the Hood is it that you linked to above, and do you have a link for more pictures of it? It looks awesome from that one shot.

Two tips:

1) Read the text in the bottom-right of the image
2) Right-click the image and view its properties.

All will be revealed ;)

From what I'm reading on there, it sounds like at the time she was sunk, she was painted a dark grey, almost similar to the Kure Grey that the Japanese used on their ships.

Here's a few more pics. I think this is the same ship that EJ posted the pic of. Great pics of a fantastic model of the Hood.

Thanks! It looks like he used Kure grey, or something very close to it.

From looking at his photos, and reading the info on the H.M.S. Hood website, it looks like Kure Grey for the hull and super structure, and Sabo Grey for the steel decks that don't have linoleum tiles, are close matches. Both colors are by Tamiya.

For the HOOD sides and superstructure, I used 36320, Dark Ghost Gray and a mixture of 36118 and 36176 for the steel decks. Take care, Rich

I corrected the kits gun turret tops with some Epoxie-Sculpt from Aves.

Is there any info on what the overhead of the open areas under the shelter deck were painted? I seem to remember from some where that they were painted white to maximize the use of the deck lights.

Pictures taken from the shelterdeck do not show white but normal hull colour.

That is a very good reference. Note that errors found in AOTS (it's not perfect), improvements to models kit, and paint schemes are to be found here:

Official HMS Hood site.

I will blindly follow the coloring instructions. Well, sort of.

What color should the expansion joints on the Shelter Deck be?

Degaussing cable plus a corticene color question

Post by PeterE »

Hi,

I am in the process of adding the degaussing cable to my 1/400 Heller kit, and after compiling some reference material I am still unsure about the shape of the cable itself. Was it a square/rectangular cross-sectionally? or circular (rod)? Also, at what point did it become one cable? The hood site states 'fore of the B turret' and 'abreast of the X turret' -the latter the point at which it split again.

Last question is regarding the corticene surface covering. If you were to use Tamiya colors, which one would approximate it most closely? If you have experimented with mixing colors I'd be interested in knowing your recipe and your overall impressions.

The shape of the cable is rectangular, a box running around the cables themselves.

It appears that the cable on the aft end is a double cable from the end of the aft armour plates and around the stern. The forward cable becomes a double cable around the position of the ladder going from the forward deck to the shelterdeck, about the length of the boot derrick stowed to the side but swung forward.

If you are going to make the cable yourself, not that the top cable is slightly thinner. (there's a how-to here)

Although double cables are seen on many more ships (cruisers) I have yet to find a good photograph showing how the cable goes from single to double.

EJFoeth,

Got it, had to check the warship pictorial plan to get a visual reference but now I do get it. Hadn't caught on the fact that the upper cable is thinner. What I really appreciate is your method on how to replicate the cable, about the only thing I'll do different is use standard evergreen thin strips (no. 101 and 102 for the thicker one, can't remember the actual dimensions) rather than cut each strip, my hand isn't as steady as it used to be :pout: . Thanks for a most helpful response.
