Re: Calling all Nimitz Class Fans!

Post by Angeliccypher »

I skimmed the thread so if I missed this answer somewhere, my apologies.

I am wanting to do a 1/350 CVN-70 in the 84-85 time frame. I have only seen the Trumpeter Nimitz kit in that scale. My question is what do I need to change to make it correct for CVN-70 in that time frame?

Thanks in advance!

The main things that require you to change / add/ scratchbuild are all the weapons sponsons. You will need to scratchbuild both bow sponsons, a couple on the aft port side, one on the stern, and I think the one on the starboard aft section as well, but that one is pretty easy. There was an extension put on the back of the island, but i am not sure if that is necessary for your timeframe. It's a good amount of complex acratchbuilding, but not impossible.

Is this a trick of the light or a new color scheme?:

You mean the mast? It's a result of the first generation of low-solar-absorbance paint that fades to a pink colour. Masts are especially susceptible to the effect since they're harder to access for repainting. There's a new formula released in the late 2000s, but ships are told to use up the old paint first.

If you mean the overhangs, that's just shadows.

Um. Someone just gave me this:

Image

It has the full air wing and only lacks aftermarket PE and weapons.

I've... never build modern or tackled something of this size. Any advice would be awesome.

I mean, I've got some room to SPEND on this.

Hello all

I by surprise came across a Trumpeter Nimitz 2005 in 1/700...I am building WWII carriers right now but this one I found 2nd hand for really cheap money...
Now my question, which other ships can be build from this kit apart from Nimitz...if any? I would prefer a CVN71 or so of the same period since the Teddy Rossevelt still had real fighter planes on board at that time.
Also, would it be possible to back date this kit to lets say the late 80ties? Are the original 1975 parts included in the box?

thanks

Well,

That kit is Nimitz post RCOH. Once again Nimitz and Ike end up the same and they changed the mast and some of the sponsons for Carl V. and on. So, you can do Nimitz and Ike out of the box post RCOH. Any others require some re-work.

I'd like to build George Washington as it sits today in Yokosuka for a friend on board. Which kit would be the best starting point? I'm not biased to scale.

What needs to be done as far as conversion work? I believe GW doesn't have Phalanx?

I planned on using the 1/700 Trumpeter Lincoln CVN-72 kit to do a Washington. That kit is a snap shot of the mid 2000s so you would have to do some research to see what has changed since then for todays version. Sea Ram vice CIWS, SAT Dome changes, that kind of stuff depending on how accurate you want to get.

The other alternative would be the Stennis kit. Stennis was a little different on the SAT Domes on the island but it might not matter when you upgrade it to GW present day.

In 1/350 scale, the Trumpeter Nimitz is all you have. That is Nimitz as commissioned and would require a lot of work to make a 2014 GW. Sgt Ryan is our resident expert on converting that kit to a modern day Nimitz and he has a couple of threads on that process.

GW is an all Super Hornet Airwing now. The 1/350 scale Trumpeter F/A-18E Super Hornets are very poorly done. Completely wrong size. They fixed that with their 1/350 F/A-18F kit.

Trumpeter's 1/700 Super Hornets are good though. With some minor mods, you can use the "F" to make a "G" Growler.

USS George Washington CVW-5 2013-present
Modex - Squadron - Aircraft
100 - VFA-102 Diamondbacks - F/A-18F
200 - VFA-27 Royal Maces - F/A-18E
300 - VFA-115 Eagles - F/A-18E
400 - VFA-195 Dambusters - F/A-18E
500 - VAQ-141 Shadowhawks - E/A-18G
600 - VAW-115 Liberty Bells - E-2C Hawkeye 2000 NP
610 - HSC-12 Golden Falcons - MH-60S
700 - HSM-77 Saberhawks - MH-60R
xx - VRC-30 DET.5 Providers - C-2A NP 2000

Good Luck,
Mark

Pit-Road actually released a George Washington as a limited/occasional run, and Hobby Search is offering it for pre-order, scheduled for re-release this April: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10073138

I compared the pics in the Pit Road Post to NAVSOURCE and at a glance the island SAT domes look correct and it looks like it has the Sea RAM so that would be a good choice if you can swing it. I may have to get me one of those!

Thanks for the post Timmy!! :thumbs_up_1:

Put myself on the reserve list for the GW. I can't build it immediately anyway so I might as well wait.

Does anyone have good photos of the pier at Yokosuka? Better than what's readily available on the net. The idea is to have GW moored with some barges around her. I'm referring to the pier with the two cranes

Anyone know why the post RCOH (Refueling Complex Overhaul) CVN-70 never got it's Phalanx CIWS back? I wonder if it's because 2 RAM launchers were added. If you look closely you can see the missing Phalanx.

Well, after looking through photos on the CVN-70 Facebook page I see that they added 2 of the 3 Phalanx mounts again in early 2013. The starboard bow mount and the port rear are back. The stern Phalanx mount has been removed, but the basic platform is still there.

CVN-70 USS Carl Vinson Help Needed

Post by dmorrissette »

Greeting Everyone:

I want to start pulling a project together to model the Vinson, preferably in 1/350 scale. I could use some recommendations on kits, aftermarket, photoetch, etc.

I can get all the reference I need but not sure where to start

Dave
