Thank you. I don't have an in-progress written up for Weehawken, but on my website I have many photos, some of them taken in-progress. I took over 500 photos of the building progress of that model, but I haven't had the desire to sort them and do a write-up after the fact. That's why I'm documenting the Carondelet build I have in-progress as I go.

The figures are from Cottage-Industries models. Linked on the main page. They don't show them on their website, but if you email them they can let you know the price, etc.

I haven't touched Carondelet in a couple of months. I had some writing deadlines to meet, and now I'm working on two commission builds for clients, so she had to take a back seat. Hopefully in April, when I get caught up, I can get back to her.

Hello to All,

I'm new to this forum and getting back into model building while I'm home recovering from a recent surgery and long hospital stay. I love Ironclads and the ACW history. I have just finished my take on the CSS Arkansas built with a kit from Ironclad Models civil war weaponry on ebay. I'm waiting for delivery of verlinden's Monitor turret and I have the Life Like /Pyro set of the Monitor and Virginia waiting on deck.

Ray, that's a nice looking Arkansas. I've looked at a few of their offerings on eBay. I'm intrigued by the post-war Passaic class kit. How was it working with the wood hull?

The main parts of the model consist of preshaped pine. The hull below the water line was a one piece pine block. The main deck is 1/4 inch plywood and the casemate is another one piece block. The pine was clear and worked very well. The saying is the devil is in the details, the cast resin details were very rough with a lot of bubbles and incomplete details. The rest of the kit consists of materials that the modeler modifies to create the details, for example the davits were fish hooks that I cut the barb and eye off. All in all not bad for the kit modeler making the jump to scratch building.

What can this sentence mean "On recoil, the cannons cleared the carriage with only about 2 inches to spare" (On USS Monitor guns).

Sorry, I'm not English-born and I'm lost in guesses.

Can you post more of the quote for some more context? I think that what it might be saying is that when the guns discharged they rolled back on the carriage and the rear of the guns cleared the side of the turret by two inches. That's just a guess. I'm not sure what "cleared the carriage" means, as the guns didn't roll clear of the carriage, unless something went horribly wrong.

I found that "Confederate Ironclad vs Union Ironclad" quote(an several other sentences) is virtually a copy of the following quote:

"On recoil, the cannons cleared the diagonal braces with only about two inches to spare"

Thought I would stop in and ask a question. Has anybody purchased plans from Cottage Industries? Can you comment on the quality?

I saw they offer plans for the CSS Louisiana, a ship I have always found fascinating. I'm curious if anybody else has seen them before I drop $50 only to find its a general layout drawing with no body plan and few photos of other models.

David Meagher has drawn plans of the City Class, and there is also an official US Parks set of the survey of Cairo's wreck. Send me a PM and I can give you some more details of both (I'm at work now, so I can't access my files here, but I've collected a bit for my USS Carondelet build).

I've only built their USS Weehawken kit. No plans with it that were drawn by them. I'd write them and ask exactly what comes with the plans, John, who runs the company, is quite friendly and approachable.

I haven't found any verification of this anywhere, so I can't swear to it's veracity, but if it IS true, it could be very interesting indeed. The Chilean Navy may be raising their old battleship the 'Manco Capac'. This is of interest to us as the Manco Capac is a Canonicus class Monitor sold to Chile after the ACW.
