Hi Brett,

Thanks for your reply! Not to worry - there's no way my Norfolk will have turquoise decks!

Actually I was thinking along the lines that you suggested. I have a surviving tin of the old WEM B15 and it looks reasonable to me against a home fleet grey hull. I have B20 as well, so I'll look at that too.

As you rightly said, we can never be sure what the real deal was.

Thanks again!

Paul

One imagines that any deck blue would be intended to tone with the sea and so be fairly dark.

A dark deck blue on Sydney can be seen here: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C177151

Is this the pre WWI Kent class?

Or the County class from the 1920's?

I am thinking of making a 1/96 scale plug in order to make a fiberglass hull. I am confused about the armored belt. I am talking about the WWII version.

The county class thread (which at this time is right below this thread) may give you more help. I'm not sure whats available in 1/96, but I know parts can be ordered from Shapeways in many scales. The known kits out there ate 1/700 waterline and I thought also 1/600. There may be 1/350 available but I don't build a lot in that scale.

Thanks David, I probably built that years ago with my Ark Royal, Ajax (?) and Frog Exeter. I later found 1/700 and I tend to build that now, but I do build 1/350 when I get the feel.

Calling all Kent sub class Cruiser fans

Post by Richard OMalley »

I am trying to get information on the armored belt that was added to the Kent sub class of the country class heavy cruisers of WWII.

What is it you seek exactly Richard? Check Norman Friedman cruisers for info on the added 4.5" belt.
If you require photo reference many images on the P.D. will show you the added belt, there is not much to see.
If you plan a larger full hull model you would be better to concentrate on the torpedo bulge.

See the main county thread, as this will probably end up there as the initial enquiry did.

Hi Brett
Does the belt blend onto the bulges below the water line or wrap around them ? I am thinking of making a 1/96 scale plug in order to make a fiberglass hull.

Hi David
The plug will be one piece but the mold will be two piece split in the middle. Iooked at ( world -war. co.UK ) and it shows it below the water line but the Profile morskie plans show it ends at the water line. Wish there was a Drydock photo. Maybe I will make it as launched and let the model builder add them if he wants to show it after moderation. Thank You for your help .

The D.D. shot is before the belt was added, pre 39
It is difficult to see and only the right angle will show that the armoured belt actually overlaps the torpedo bulge by a small margin.

Thanks David
I rather suspected the drawings were not correct because they show the bulge looking more like a blister.I doubt they bent a 4.5" section of cemented armor around the bulges plus a strait part going up the hull side. I think it would blend into the bulge like on HMS VANGUARD.

Just googled HMAS Australia. It states 4.5" added along water line. The Kent sub class had 1" to begin with makes 5.5" total?

Again thank you very much . When I start the plug on WMU I will be sure to mention your assistance. I Have a 1/96HMS EXETER in the works and have directed the buiders who will be doing the hole ship to the model warships site.
You have been a great help.

Images can be deceiving, here are some closeups of Australia`s belt.
Kent`s armour belt was identical, as were any of the other Kent`s which were fitted with it.
As I had previously pointed out, the belt overlapped the torpedo bulge, and appears may actually have extended below the mean waterline, this is open to one`s interpretation.

I would treat the world-war.co with some caution as regrettably not all the information is accurate, nor the profiles.
Don`t know what to make of the Kent G.A. and other ships which show what could be construed as an armour belt extending way below the waterline.
Australia was constructed as per the plans and layout of all the other Kents, but her profile onsite shows something totally different?
The Belts fitted to any Kent which received them appear to have been identical in design and fit.

Hi Brett
Your photos along with David's are just what I needed. I belong to a club for RC warships. There are plenty of US and German warships but that's all. I am trying to remedy that by making British and Japanese hulls. I have a 1/96 plug in the works of HMS EXETER and will do the Kent's next.

Anyone know if they removed the 1 inch belt before they added the 4.5 in belt or did they plate over it giving a belt with a total of 5.5 in . Its only .010 in 1./96 so I shouldn't worry about it ?

I like what they unofficially called the China Station white and buff. If I make the early version ( 1" belt ) it could be painted those colors. Anyone wanting a WWII version can add the extra 4.5".
