Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

A new Yamato correction posted by one of the Japanese modelers I follow - if you look at the rear set of rectangular windows located just to the left of the gun director on the high pedestal, he has added a small open platform with a couple of binoculars on it. Although his scratch build kit is of Musashi, if you look closely of the famous picture of Yamato under construction (see colorized photo posted from this site:

you can also see the same platform on Yamato. Its covered by a piece of sheet metal or plywood, but its clearly there. You may want to download and expand the Yamato pic for a better view of it.

Do you have a link to this modelbuilder, would be nice to see the photos ?

The colorized, large scale version of the pic really helps to define the area, which is kind of shaded and difficult to see in smaller version of the photo.

Was it ever determined if Yamato carried an Emergency Rudder on her last voyage?

Ishida provides one in his resin sets and several Japanese modelers have portrayed their kit with one. Since it would have been easy to store it in the hangar well, I'd have to assume it was probably present, and plan to use the part on my build.

I'm seeing this 1/350 build on a Japanese site.
Wondering if this would be the likely place to store this. Then it could be lowered in a short amount of time into the water and dragged.

I'm guessing this is based on the location used on other ships that are better documented. It's also over scale compared to what is in my set and what would be practical to manipulate with a crane. My money still goes on stashing it in the hangar well. Bear in mind that any planes carried into battle would have been up on deck during the sortie and would have been launched during battle conditions.

Just a note - the planes were launched the morning of April 7 1945 before the battle began and were sent home...

There are numerous sets, not all of which I have.


I'm not sure to what degree he is still maintaining the sets for the old tooling. Many of the items he made have been corrected in the new tooling and are no longer needed.

Ok now i'm am not an IJN builder by any stretch . But A fellow has asked me to build him a YAMATO.. This is the Tamiya kit in 1/350,..its an old kit....# 78002*5000 comes complete to me with the original electric motors and hardware. The sprues are still bagged and all items are there.

OMG its an ugly deck seam!..which wood deck set, if any,will fit this old kit?
I've looked at Ponto,..Artwox,...and fujumi...but it seems nobody has a cross reference number for this kit. It appears Freetime list #TAM12645 and also TAM78014....will either of these fit this kit?

The Artwox one listed for $25 will fit the old tooling that you have. That said, the old tooling is badly out of date and has an enormous number of inaccuracies. If your client can afford the new tooling, it will build into a much more attractive kit.

I must second this statement. The new tool of the kit is by far and away light years above the old tool. If your client can afford it, it is by far and away his better option.

I knew the kit was "old-school" but didn't realize it was this crude.
My neighbor asked me to build this for his Grandfathers birthday this December. When I learned he was a ww2 navy vet I couldn't say no, so here I am.
Now they are having a nice display case built for it and all that, I am to build the ship. I did tell him that the kit was not all that great and it needed plenty of upgrade, but he isn't willing to spend anymore.
I can't just box build this thing...my conscience won't let me.....so I am going to pop for a basic PE set of rails and the Artwox deck, hoping that and a bit of pre-shading and pin-washes will give this pig a pretty dress.

Hey Guys, I ran into this online and thought some of you would like to see this. It's the Kure Museum's Yamato and Musashi photo book that's 138 pages!!!

Now just so you know, this page is in Chinese, so when you click on the link, look for the Cover Photo and click to open. Then look for the page counter at the left bottom corner. Click on the upward arrow and a page index will come up. The pages load slowly, but they're clear and can be enlarged. Just be patient. This book goes for $150 on eBay at an average price around $75. I see that posting this has caused a problem with some of you, so I have taken it down. I was only trying to be helpful to all the Yamato files out there that haven't had the opportunity to see this publication.

My original intention was to contribute to this thread in a positive way without causing conflict, but as you can see I did, so I apologize to all here.

As some know by surfing the internet, many scans of older books and magazines are available with little effort. You may also know that the publisher has the right under law to request their property be taken off any site or report them. In this case it seems that no one has challenged this blogs posting.

The photos in this publication are seen all over any Yamato site you go to. These are "The Kure Museum Archival Photos" and only captions of the photo are shown with no text included.

I don't understand copyright law, so the guys here that know more about the law will be of more help then I. My understanding is once it hits the internet, their's not much you can do about it.

All of us in the past have posted photographs, drawings, etc... on this thread, without any objections to my knowledge. I have even posted scans from publications that were out of print. I didn't think I was doing anything wrong!

Anyways, this is a great and fun place to discuss something we all have a passion for. Let's don't make it into something it isn't.

I don't pretend to be an expert on copyright law any more than I do the Yamato. It just isn't the field of law I practice in. However, I do think that in so far as the photographs are concerned, there probably isn't any copyright violation, any copyright on the photos having long since expired, if they weren't in the public domain to begin with. Now, if you get into copying the text, that is clearly intellectual property and would be subject to copyright law. To make things a little more slippery, this appears to be somebody's blog as near as I can make out the nature of the site, and I'm not sure that merely posting the link to it is, in and of itself, a violation. From what I understand from what little I do know about copyright law, the law is still struggling to catch up with the realities of the internet, so the linking issue may be a grey area. But, I'm pretty comfortable saying that just the photos is OK.
