Dumb Question I suppose: I have the 1991 Circa Yamato. Within there are decals which I understand completely. The instructions regarding the wakways are not so obvious. "Cut out and apply". I presume the walkways are not decals and have to be stuck on. If I am right what do I use to stick them on? As I said, Dumb Question but if I spoil them well . . .

I guess you missed the part of the sentence that says "referring to the diagram at right"? Those are decals for the aircraft handling deck, decals 17-22. They appear to be regular waterslide decals.

Im looking to do a whiff Yamato in 1946 and I'm looking to paint her with
some form of late war IJN camo scheme. Does anyone know if the green camo scheme used on the cvs would work on this ship, or would the blobs like
those on the Takao or Myoko be more suitable (on that note what colours did they use for this scheme)?

hi

i've fitted the tower crane arm ( but not the tower) and i've tied it off on each side around the catapult legs with rope ( to prevent it from moving in high winds) the front of the crane is lieing down on the end of the flightdeck.....it looks quite good.

the bow end steel deck is a lighter shade of grey in the photos... probably weathering, so i'm guessing the stern was similar.

she's taking a long time to make, the PE really slows you down.

The green paint schemes like those used on Shinano were specific to carriers and were designed to make them look like merchant ships when viewed lying stationary at anchor. They were a reaction to the long-range photo recon missions the US was carrying out after the fall of Saipan. They would not be appropriate for battleships. The camo paint schemes on the cruisers were like-wise meant to hide them while in port. Most likely Yamato would have been a solid grey even if the war had extended into 1946.

"preserved for eventualities". I doubt that they had a clear idea what they would do with their remaining ships after April, other than keep them afloat as long as possible.

hi all

i've fully weathered the top of hull above the waterline, unfortunately this made the all red paint under the waterline look completely wrong, so i've had to weather the underside as well.

i used a sandy yellow colour and airbrushed the keel, tapering it up the side, this took hours to get right, i'm going to add the original red tomorrow and try to highlight the hull plating, this will be very tricky to get right.

in addition, the flightdeck with the grey stripes looks wrong but i'm not sure how to do this...the light grey looks too bright to me

so i've resprayed it dark red and dappled over it with dirty dark brown, i've added rust along the waterline, the Flight deck looks ok now.

this is the hardest model i've ever made, the old Yamato kit i made was dead easy compared to this

Hasegawa 1/450 Yamato kit review

Excellent quality !
this kit is highly detailed with razor sharp mouldings, the hull side is terrific, it has all the plating even on the underside, it has the Degaussing cable with all its clamps, the davits are well detailed too..... the flight deck has all the welded plates shown, as does the anchor deck area, the deck looks gorgeous too; especially the planking, the hexagonal gun shields are moulded onto the deck, so there's some fiddly painting here, unless you opt for a Wooden deck !......the deck also has the hose reels and ventilators etc moulded in, not a huge problem

the kit doesn't have many parts, but the quality is very high..... it's basically an easy build version of the New Tool Tamiya Yamato, comparing the two; this Hasegawa has a more detailed hull and flight deck/bow deck, it also has a far better funnel and and a similar superstructure.

the main mast is in one piece! WOW, this looks fiddly to cut off the sprue though.

the 18'' gun barrels are open at the end, to reveal the gun bore, so there's no need for metal after market barrels.

any negatives ? yes you'll need photo etch to replace the tower crane and catapult, because this area is very bad and just like the original Tamiya Yamato from 20 years ago.....finally, it's a shame it's not 1/350

this kit reminds me of the latest Hasegawa BF109G 1/32.......really high quality, so to sum up, it's far better than the old Tamiya Yamato and about the same as the expensive new tool version....or better !!!, without all the annoying fiddly hassle that's present in their kit.

i am quite shocked to see the high quality of this kit, looking at it right now, the bridge area parts are gorgeous, all of the deck area WOW......and look at its hull, just totally stunning.

this only cost �35 from Japan, but of course you'll still need PE railings etc, but you might not need the deck because this was painted black, it just depends doesn't it.

it's an easy 10/10

yes sorry, it's the retool new version, in addition other things i've noticed:-

the ends of the deck planing look correctly staggered ? they line up one in every 6, i've hardly ever seen this on a plastic model before....WOW !!!

the Barbettes (moulded on the deck) have those thin vertical rivet plates already in place....but you'll need to make Canvas blast bags ( main guns) because these are wrong

the superstructure has the chequered non slip decks, as do the gun emplacements, but it has the Wrong flight deck support beams that attach to the hull side ( same as the old Tamiya Yamato)..... not a huge problem.

the anchor chains are very well moulded on the deck...but it's not a huge problem to use real chain

the detailing on the funnel is excellent and the fiddly funnel grill is beautifully moulded in one piece, it looks similar to PE.

she is about 7'' shorter than the Tamiya kit, but still pretty big at about 22.5'' long, but the ``deal breaker`` is the very high quality moulding of the hull and decks, esp the planking and flight deck plating, so much better than the latest Tamiya kit, the hull side is miles superior too.............. and only �35.

i've not read a review of this Hasegawa yamato online, but my guess is any Yamato fan will go for the Tamiya retool straight away and not notice this kit, simply because of Tamiya's great reputation...........or the old Hasegawa Yamato was so bad !!!!!!

this is my 4th Yamato, it'll need a bit of work but not as much as the expensive �160 Tamiya, in my opinion it's a very clever kit indeed, because they've reduced the fiddly annoying build time by reducing the parts, but overcome this by increasing the detailing and mould quality enormously..... is this the best Yamato kit ? for me definitely yes, it's basically a ``user friendly`` version of the latest Tamiya kit........... i.e the main mast is in one piece.

i'm so happy to see this kit it's everything i've dreamed of, but i wont be building this till mid next year because i've loads of 1/32 Aircraft to make first !!!

i've already got the PE (two sheets) because i brought it by mistake thinking it was for the Tamiya kit HA HA......isn't that odd
